The Playstation 3 ships 2.1 million units for it's quarter (the console who shipped the most this quarter with the 360 only having shipped 1.1 million units. The lowest it's been since 2006/2007. Source: http://www.edge-online.com/... ), is currently leading in WW sales this year (Source: http://www.vgchartz.com/art... ) and is the only gaming company that puts out exclusives yearly somehow means the brand is dying? Funny enough, when MS released it's 360 Q3 numbers which showed that it's division lost $229 million, we didn't see one doomed article then.
If you bothered to actually READ the article, it clearly states the PS Brand is NOT dying. Seriously, you need to look beyond the title. Hell even the description says "the Playstation Brand is alive, well, and looking good for the Future."
But no, you went and made an erroneous report without even knowing the full content of the article. You just pounced even though the article AGREES with your comment that PS3 isn't going anywhere.
Please, you just edited your article after the first reports and after waiting hours for it to be approved. Your article originally read out that the Ps3 was dying, losing millions in it gaming division. On how the vita was a fail and should be discontinued and how the ps3 wasn't relevant anymore.
I didn't edit it at all. I can show you the timestamps if you frickin' want. You NEVER read the article and just reported it. You're just one of those people that reads titles and forms a false opinion on that alone.
the only point dante112 was making is why articles talking about playstation doom, exist in the first place. And he is right, playstation3 is doing much better than X360 on a worldwide basis. And when microsoft says xboxlive profit was 1 billion, you have to consider that over half of that is made of charging people for xlive membership. So in fact they are not doing that much more in terms of sales than psn. Go check the figures if you don,t believe me.
What does shipping the most consoles have to do with them actually selling? Sony shoves the overflow on the retailers and they pile up because they aren't moving. Sony's not the first to do that. Sony could ship 5 million but it wont matter if they only sell 300k.
like your name your statement is ALLWRONG. as far as any console maker is concerned, once its shipped that means its purchased by a retailer. which means it was SOLD.
That's not how retail works. You don't stockpile something that's not selling.... If retailers were actually buying a ton of PS3's that are not moving, we'd see a price drops and major bundles not promoted by Sony themselves. We'd see major adds advertising PS3 and if you live in the States, you should recognize that that's not the case. What you do see advertised every week is the hot right now item 4gig 360 and the Wii, which has been in the situation you're claiming the PS3 is in.
Ps brand is strong and I'll only get stronger. I believe Sony needed a wake up call and boy did they get a big one with quench of ps3. Just look at Vita launch and pricing and you can see any has learned a better price and more games with launch are needed.
Say what you want but maybe any launched too much with VIta and now don't have a lot, they had like 20 some games at Quincy for Vita.
Ps4 won't happen anytime soon. I think ps4 will launch in fall 2014 with more software support and better pricing along with a developer friendly console
I wouldn't be surprised if Sony does launch n fall of 2013 just to be n same launch window with MS. But if Sony has learned anything this gen it's hat you can launch after everyone and still be very successful. If you take out xbox360 first year of sale than ps3 has outsold it world wide.
KAZ needs to put a plan together for future than follow on that for success and adopt on the way to see what the consumers needs are
do you really think sony will let m$ for a year alone in the market again ?
thats the reason the xbox was dominating back then in WW sales and the RROD wich boosted sales even more.and sony high price but mostly was the 1 year and a half headstart m$ had.
From where I'm sitting Playstation brand is strong, lots of good IP's ... Good Handheld, a strong console, free online, and I'm sure when Playstation 4 comes out it will be well worth the money. Really looking forward to what Playstation and Xbox bring out for next-gen consoles
They do have tons of blood from the money they cashed in from the PS2 but that money is now running out and the PS3 will have to start making a profit and stop relying on the PS2 funds.
You got it right "Units", the problem is not that they are not selling consoles, because they are. The problem is that they are loosing money. They need to manage their business much better or they will go under.
Great Article! Sony still has it, and I like what you said about the audience being the problem with the PS Vita, I think its the same with the PS3. They are essentially the best gaming devices out there.
The reason is most likely because of financial reports coming out showing just how badly Sony is doing.
The Yen has definitely hurt Sony but Sony's problems happend long ago. Their TV division isn't doing as well as projected, they virtually lost the portable music division and now the Playstation brand is slowly eroding. The Playstation 3 was such a huge financial undertaking that it bled Sony while Playstation 2 sales offset those losses. Now that the Playstation 2 is pretty much dead in the water along with the investment into creating the Vita, Sony is feeling it financially more than ever.
Yes the Playstation 3 is still selling quite well but those first few years really hurt the company when they were selling the system for upwards of $600 while the production costs were over $800. You really think the profit margins now are over $200? On top of that development for creating Playstation 3 games is many times that than they were in creating Playstation 2 games.
Sony just needs to restructure itself and focus on key products. They just have too many items and way too many divisions which also comes with way too much management. In John Carmack's interview he mentioned about the new OLED TV's and his input and how he thought they were great but wanted to make a comment. It was a pain in the ass because he had to go through so many people just to talk to someone who can actually do something. Downsize and market your strengths, that to me is the key. The Playstation brand is still very valuable.
Man I really wanna ditch Sony platforms and go with the fad, but its really hard to just leave PS, WTF am i going to play ? I like all their shit seriously!!!
I agree but the reason Sony is in this mess is not because of the gaming division but because of how poorly other products are preforming like TV,Lap Tops, Cell Phones, MP3 players and tablets.
Sony has two options right now if they want to get out of the red.
1. Cut some of the divisions that are not making any money like the cell phones and MP3 player.
2. Keep all of the divisions but make the products price competitive which will mean cheaper manufacturing.
They have been doing great in the gaming department but TBH Sony needs to fire all of the marketing people and hire some new young blood. How is it that a games lke Gear of War and Halo sell millions in less than amonth but Games like Killzone and Resistance can not?
@Knight_Crawler decent post , but im sorry not well thought out, you may need to do a lil bit more research.
Sony has two options right now if they want to get out of the red.

cut cell phones? OMG lol really?
psst..you may want to rethink your post, not just part of it but your entire post!
let me show you something
Sony knows it's not just about the dedicated Handheld's by themselves and Nintendo may have a much tougher time of it than Sony in the future.
Apple sold 8.3M iPhones last quarter, filing shows
The PlayStation division is now aligned with the mobile and digital imaging divisions as the three pillars of Sony. This is dramatically different than from when TV and music dominated the company.
playstation going to close up shop, just wishful thinking by many!
any one in the gamer media and web sites like this do not bring up the fact that Sony's mobile section is selling 7.4 Million xperia phones per sales Quarter...and Apple just reported selling 8.3M iPhones last quarter? How on gods green earth when Sony even said
Playstation IS at profit. and people still act like the Playstation part is going to get the axe?
does this freaking sound like the Playstation is getting the axe:
"The PlayStation division is now aligned with the mobile and digital imaging divisions as the three pillars of Sony. This is dramatically different than from when TV and music dominated the company. "
Straight from Kaz:
"we need to make sure that we continue our success in the entertainment space—in the music space, in the video game space, and in motion pictures. That’s an area where we are profitable, and it needs to continue to grow."
two words for people
Playstation Mobile
It's more than just a secondary platform for Sony its a prime platform 7.4 million Xperia smartphones per quarter and people really think the PSVita is also not going to benefit from that?
So concentrating on playstation is exactly what Sony is doing , and since Playstation is @ profit, the cut's are going somewhere else, can you guess where, here's a hint the part that lost money for 8 year's straight for Sony.
playstation is dying when they no longer make games or consoles. all i see from playstation at the moment is exclusive after exclusive. new handhelds and soon to be ps4?
Yeah but PS exclusives dont sell for shit. As many sony fans that are on N4G, harping about exclusives. You would think they would sell well. But these exclusives struggle just to sell a million units.
The Vita isn't selling well either. Didnt you notice how sony put the Vita and PSP sales together. In an attempt to pull the wool over the investors eyes. They did the same thing with PS3 and PS2.
Sony is in dire straits financially. Thats why you see all these doom and gloom articles. I wouldn't expect sony to go too far in debt, or even at all, with the PS4. They will likely try to sell as close to profit as they can. So I expect the PS4 not to be all that impressive spec wise.
yea ok lets see uncharted 2 did 5 million uncharted 3 over 5 million gt5 8-9 million killzone 3 2.5-3 million mgs4 6 million that right there outsells 360 games halo gears fable or forza
ps if u say gears ill say uncharted same sells if u say halo i say gt5 if u say forza i say killzone they all have about equal sells so wtf do everyone mean they sell better
I believe Sony's Playstation brand is floating Sony as a whole lately. If I am correct it is their strongest sector.
IMO... All 3 platforms stand good chance in next approaching generation. I think each has imagined a unique enough idea for their next hardware that we will see healthy competition as a whole.
How about who cares about the sells. I never knew what the importance of sells meant to gamers other than to Boast and Brag to people who don't really care. Lets just play the games and have fun like they're designed to do.
This is as stupid as iPhone vs Android.. IT'S A PHONE! YOU USE IT TO CALL PEOPLE.
Everyone is questioning the PS brand after the 1st qtr report but in all seriousness, if you have followed Sony's financial report from this gen. You will know that :even if" the PS division was profitable from the beginning of the PS3.
It will still not be able to cover all the loses of Sony's TV division.
This type of end/doom questioning should not be aimed at the PS division but on their TV division because quite frankly that one division is killing the company.
Sony have always been on track they have just encountered a few bumps on the way.
Sony acquiring Gaikai shows that they have some great things in store for the future and are willing to spend to invest in projects to ensure the future of their company.

Every console had a decline this year, but the US gaming media seems to really have it out for the PS3 for some reason.
But no, you went and made an erroneous report without even knowing the full content of the article. You just pounced even though the article AGREES with your comment that PS3 isn't going anywhere.
You knew the headline is what you needed to get attention, then you complain when people get worked up about it.
And he is right, playstation3 is doing much better than X360 on a worldwide basis.

"Seriously, you need to look beyond the title"
Perhaps you need to put up a title that is more true to the article, and less about getting cheap hits.
Say what you want but maybe any launched too much with VIta and now don't have a lot, they had like 20 some games at Quincy for Vita.
