Daily Reaction: Are Social Games The Next Big Thing, Or Simply a Bubble Waiting to Burst?

While the undisputed leader in Facebook gaming has seen their share price tumble, more and more mainstream publishers are turning to this market as a potential goldmine and changing their focus from AAA console games to smaller social titles. - PSLS (Casual games, PS3, Zynga)

Considering we've just entered the Information Age and communication is everything, I see a long and prosperous future for Social Games.

I do not think we should be questioning if social games are the next big thing. Isn't it all ready? So easy to do especially with social networking sites like Facebook. Big companies have all ready moved into this space. Will console manufacturers move into the space (unlikely in the conventional sense) but other publishers have

The bubble only will burst if most people actually start playing good games.

I think there needs to be more of a different direction in the Social Gaming area. Right now it is very stale, every company is doing the same thing, following the same model as the next company.

There are hundreds of Farm, City, Pet and Gang type of social game all of them follow the same design and gameplay style. A lot of users are catching on to this and becoming bored. Big names like EA and Zynga need to step up and offer a new experience to this already tired genre.

Outernauts by Insomniac Games is entertaining, but I still can't see myself actually paying for a few of those crystals that effectively only speed up my progress - I don't mind the grind and the rewarding feeling that comes with it. I may buy a 5 or 10 pack just to support Insomniac, but I'd much rather pay for a full experience.

It's by far my least favourite Insomniac game.

I don't think the game industry knows how to keep the casual and social gamer. I think they got lucky when they released the Wii.

I think they are trying to pin down the market for this audience but they are stepping all over their core fanbase while doing so. One thing is for sure...they are willing to destroy established IPs for a chance to hit it big and appeal to the masses. They must be that much bigger than what they have now.
