Apocalyptic Soapbox: Sony’s Attempt to Return The Playstation to Glory

From Pixel Apocalypse...

"After donning the role of “the new guy” back in 1994 with the release of the Playstation, Sony has grown into a gaming giant. The PS2’s longevity propelled the company to new heights, where they promptly fell from thanks to the botched launch that was the PS3. Now, almost six years later, Sony is looking for the last years of the PS3 to help regain their spot on top of the video game mountain." (PS3, Sony)

Sony has been their own worst enemy this generation.

@pixelapocalypse.com.....Just a tid bit of info for you....
"With their purchase of Japanese cloud service Gaikai, Sony dropped themselves right into the competitive streaming market, taking on Steam and OnLive at the same time."

_____________________________ _________________

Gaikai is not a Japanese based service. Gaikai is from California......So Cal, if I'm not mistaken.

Not a big deal, just wanted to let you know.

They were one of the many enemies this generation. They also had (and in some cases still have):

1) The media
2) The recession
3) Strong yen
4) Gamers who buy a 360/PS3 for the sole purpose a game instead of the many on offer e.g. Fifa, CoD, PES
5) Anon
6) Earthquake

Considering the amount of crap they got this gen, I think they done extremely well. They probably offered the most varied amount of quality new IP's, returning IP's and games across genres.

For gamers who like to game (not chat), they offered the most awesome online gaming service that offers some of the best games this gen at low prices as well as other content.

Had MS or Ninty have had to go through the same problems this gen, I am not sure they would still be around today for us to debate this and for that, we must give credit where credit is due.

The problem is the journalists or shall I say selfmade journalists don't have any creativity left in them apart from the creativity left to write flaimbait articles and headlines. It is always about someone being doomed or the other, some game not being able to live up to the hype, some service being this and some people being that.

Their former glory is not just measured in sales and profits, it is also measured in content and consumer satisfaction. If this was a well thought out and written article, it would have covered it.

Thank you, I've no idea why N4G is full of these flamebait articles but with people like you around it slightly restores my tiny slither of trust in the gaming community.

I'd say Nintendo went through much worse with the Gamecube, people thought Nintendo should get out of the console market way back then. They survived.

Microsoft survived losing money on every original Xbox, lost billions on repairs and honoring warranties on the Xbox 360. I think that is probably something Sony or Nintendo wouldn't have recovered from.

We could make excuses for any of the companies at this point, but the fact of the matter is that this current generation is basically over, the next generation starts this November (most likely), and Sony gets a chance to redeem themselves.

Hopefully Sony doesn't pull a Sega and they actually learn from their mistakes. Anyone can make excuses for mistakes, but it takes guts and a willingness to change to actually accept them.

Truth is... sony waited too long! Nintendo has captured the casual gamer and portable gamer. Ms has taken away some of the core market with games like halo gears and pushing hard for people to want to play cod games on 360. Sony still has the diehard fans and some core.

The reason i say they waited to long is because ms and sony kept prices too high, forcing gamers to move on to pc iphone and android. Tablets are becoming a force and are shrinking the market for console gamers.

LMAO...u guys have no idea what ya talking bout!

Ya have a hard enough time knowing how to get ya next Trophy/Achievement, but somehow ya know Sony is done?
Seems to me "Gamers" r more interested in Financial Situations rather than the entertainment of games themselves!
Ya more worried than Sony is...lol
Un-Freakin-B-Lieveable!

Game on.

While I believe Sony have made their share of mistakes this gen, they still offer the most well rounded gaming experiences for core gamers so don't see what the problem is.. the days of one console to rule them all is long gone.

This gen is already pretty much on its way out. Time to give up all the fantasies about PS3 being the next PS2 and look to the next gen.
chrisarsenalsavart  +   1282d ago
ps3 was the next ps2 in every possible ways except sales wise.

as a gamer i can say ps3 has exceed my expectations even if it took them a little while to get there. but so was the ps2.
And compares to xbox360, ps3 still got a a lot of life left.
