Computer Games or Interactive Movies

With the announcement today that Resident Evil 6 will feature over four hours of cut scenes (compared to the slightly more reasonable 1-2 hours in the previous 2 games), it got me thinking… Are games becoming less interactive as the narrative starts to steal the focus? (PS3, Wii, Xbox 360)

Four hours of cutscenes in a forty hour game is not bad. Four hours in an 8-10 hour game is unacceptable. Also, depends on the quality and content of those scenes. Heavy action is good. Characters standing around BS'ing is not so good.

Agreed, I remember in Indigo Prophecy where cutscenes/cinematics actually drew the player into the game instead of throwing the player back into reality. However, the difference between that game then and an odd assortment of others today, is the fact that a cutscene was only needed when it was actually needed. Games today tend to lean toward, "Hey! Let's watch this 5 minute action movie in this game you just bought for gameplay!"

see....now i love action scenes, i do. I actually want their to be tons of action scenes because well its awesome. But like Knight says.

standing around talking about garbage is almost useless unless it is actually progressing the story and is very interesting.

I love cute scenes for the most part. As long as I don't get stuck watching one without being able to save when I was ready to quit the game, I'm good. I don't buy crap, so I got that part covered.

MGS 4 and Resident Evil 5 had great in-game cutscenes, I absolutely loved them!

I've been playing nothing but MGS4 lately, completely agree, I love that game, even the corny parts.

There's a place for all types of gaming, from run and gun get your hands dirty cod to games like MGS or Heavy Rain that are more story based. Why would anyone not want the variety.
