Can Casual Games Stand Up?

Should casual games be regarded in the same realm as triple-A titles? Could they be worthy contenders for an overall Game of the Year award? Though not always a popular opinion, Gamers-Association.com editor Nick Cane is starting to think so. (Casual games, Mobile)

I disagree. BUT I disagree because I think the question is so loosely worded that if you put some qualifiers on to it then the answer is YES and YES.

First off, Games are games so all games should be considered for Game of the Year regardless of being casual, social, free to play, Pay to play, AAA, MMO... again a game is a game. Now are they worthy? Well that question should be applied to EVERY game should it not? IF...and I stress IF...a casual game has fantastic gameplay, visuals, story, etc... why would it not be worthy of consideration? That would be like dismissing all free to play games just cause they are free. Dust 514 is free to play...is that just tossed aside cause its free to play?

So with qualifications and a level of standards, any game could be in contention given it meets that certain level of quality.

Casual games will always remain EASY to develop and SIMPLE to play. They are called "casual" for a reason. Casual games are developed with the mindset of being a quick mindless experience and not a deep groundbreaking game. That is why a casual game will never be a GOTY nominee or winner. There is no way I can put a casual game in the same realm as Metal Gear for example.

Dust 514 is going to get automatically dismissed not because it's free, but because it's MP only. MP only games fall in the same realm as mindless fun being the priority, therefore not reaching the quality and deep experience of a Portal or a Red Dead Redemption for example.

At the end of the day it's all an opinion. I personally can't ever imagine a casual game wining GOTY over countless AAA titles that get released every year.
