just a view of how Sony has been getting a good start this year and has a lot of positive things going for them. Xbox 360 just hasn't showed much to compete with attention. Trust me I am one of the ones who hopes consoles keep getting cheaper. Specialy by the time Gears 2 comes out. I have a lot of payments to make but I have a good feeling for my self this year so hopefully I will have extra money and buy my own Xbox 360. Microsoft isn't really relevant to Sony this gen any more than they were last gen. The same mostly US Halo/PC gamer demographic who bought the first Xbox are buying the new Xbox.

Sony is competing against three things this gen:

1) Manufacturing costs

2) HDTV adoption

3) Some PS2 owners taking a brief detour into Wii land before they upgrade to an HDTV and a PS3

The PS3 is the first Sony console that shipped with a brand new drive technology in BluRay. Both CD and DVD were already established technologies when the PS1 and PS2 consoles were released. As the multitude of news stories about the dramatic cost reductions in BluRay drives and motherboard and chip production have shown, Sony is well on their way of being able to have a constant series of price cuts over the next five to seven years just like the PS1 and PS2 went through on their way down to the 100 dollar price point.

For the PS1 and PS2 anyone could walk into a store and get the full capabilities of the console. This is the first Playstation console that really needs a new TV to really make full used of the console. HDTVs are getting down into the 500-1000 dollar range this year so that challenge will rapidly become less and less of a hurdle.

It makes financial sense for many PS2 owners without a ton of disposable income for both a 1000+ dollar 1080p TV and a 400 PS3 to stick with their PS2 for the time being and finish their most likely gigantic backlog of PS2 games - and probably a few PS1 games too.

The real wildcard is how many of the close to 130 million PS2 owners will pick up Wiis before they make the leap to the PS3.

Sony now has some 20 first party developers putting out an even stronger exclusive lineup for the PS3. Sony has more first party developers this gen than both Nintendo and Microsoft combined. Combined with the surprisingly good and frequent PSN exclusives coming out every month or two the PS3 is most likely going to end up having an even stronger library of games than the PS2.

When the PS3 passes the 360 in worldwide installed base will be nothing but a minor footnote five years from.

Console developers put their support behind the console that they believe will be around long enough for them to maximize their investment in technology. That is one of the main reasons Sony was able to create the largest and most diverse console library ever for the PS2 - developers knew Sony was the console manufacturer that was going to allow them to put out three to four iterations of their franchises over five to seven years reusing the same engine technology thus lowering their development costs and raising their profits.

Sony is in an even stronger position this gen than they were with the PS3:

* Amazingly reliable hardware
* The only console with the next gen HD movie format right in the box
* Virtually silent operation
* Dramatic graphical power advantage
* Greatly expanded exclusive first party developer lineup
* The incredible Home online world
* Virtually ever developer and franchise that got 130 million or so people worldwide to buy PS2s making games for the PS3
* Rock solid lagfree and free for everyone online service with dedicated servers for all major games
* Killer PS3 / PSP gaming and media integration
* Easy upgrades with cheap off the shelf harddrives
* DLNA media streaming support for pictures, music, and movies

It will just as fun five years from now reading all the crazy PS3 articles being written this past year as it has been this past year reading those inane PS2 articles from six years ago.

While I think everyone would agree that CDs were established for music when the PS1 came out you're totally wrong about DVD. Most analysts would argue the PS2 helped launch DVD. I know it was my first DVD player outside of my PC. DVD was just breaking out of early adopters when PS2 came out.

Other than that I think I mostly agree with your assessment on an HDTV being a requirement to truly appreciate this generation. I would say that applies to the 360 as well. In my opinion the Wii just can't handle real next gen systems. My Wii doesn't get powered on very often.

I was referring to the newness of the technology, not the adoption of the format. The first DVD player shipped around 1997 and the PS2 was released in 2000. DVD had three years of cost reductions to go through before Sony included it in the PS2.

You make alot of good points. But you are making your judgements from a hardcore gamers standpoint!

Alot of gamers bought Ps2 because of the large selection of games, just as they did with the Ps1. Even though, the Ps1 and 2 were weaker than their competition, they sold great because of quantity of games, low pricepoint and DVD playback.

With this gen, the majority of the people who watch blu-ray movies, already have a stand alone player or a Ps3. Ps3 has quality games, but they don't have the most, which was what gave them a major advantage in the last two generations. They have the most powerful system, but it came with a high price!

The average consumer doesn't know, and really doesn't care about having a HDTV right now, as long as they can play their games. We as Hardcore gamers care about that kind of stuff cause we will buy lots of games, and we know the capabilities of the system we have purchased. Most average gamers buy a console for football, basketball, golf, and a racing game. I have talked to alot of those types of gamers, and they don't care about Halo, GTA, Final Fantasy, Gears of War, or none of those other games, because they buy their console to play games casually.

Sony has to get their main advantage back, which is a large selection of games. They have their exclusives, which is great. But that alone isn't what helped them win the last two wars.

Personal note: There are not 130 million individual Ps2 owners! The Ps2 brokedown on people about as bas as Xbox 360's disc read error problem. Alot of people had to keep buying the Ps2 several times. I know people who bought 8 Ps2's because of this problem. If you want the real number... look for the highest selling game on Ps2, and assume that that represents half of Ps2 owners. If sony really sold 130 million Ps2's, they would have had no problem selling 20 million Ps3's in it's first year, no matter what the price. Which is what they originally thought as well!

DVD became the home video standard because it was WAY superior to VHS for the same price. You got rid of the bulky tapes and instead gave manufacturers a little disk that cost them 5% of the price to produce, and they could still sell it for the same price.

DVD did revolutionize gaming for the capacity it offered, but even if gaming never used it the technology would have still been a success.

Well said. Too many here try to lump the casual crowd in with the hardcore gamer. Just because Metal Gear Solid 4 looks like a must buy to us, doesn't mean the vast majority of people will want play it. We have to remember that we are the minority here, and while we are head over heals for a new Halo, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, or Killzone title, the casual gamers only want a cheap console to play some next gen Madden and could care less about Blu-ray and and downloading games. Dreamcast launched 9-9-99. Ps2 launched a year later. By fall 2001, Ps2 had passed Dreamcast. And the momentum it had gathered was significant. xbox launched a year after the ps2, in the middle of that momentum, and alongside the gamecube; to further handicap the xbox, about 20million ps2's had been sold before the xbox came out. a much different scenario then this current generation, wouldn't you say?

Fast forward to now - 360 came out fall 05, ps3 fall 06. at fall 07, ps3 was behind 360 by what? 8 mill? 10 mill? and the 360's sales haven't exactly fallen off a cliff while the ps3's have risen either. and if MS can aggresively cut the price to where ps3 cant match? what then? This time around its alot closer then you've distorted it to be.

the only problem with MS this gen is that they werent able to broaden their fanbase. Its the same people that bought an xbox. However, MS is now making money on the 360 which they didnt do with the original which is a positive sign. The 360 just doesnt have the broad appeal that the ps brand is renowned for. That doesnt mean that the 360 is any sort of a failure, they just need to work on changing their image a bit and they could become a serious contender (I know, I know, I am making it sound like the 360 is dead last, but they will be by the end of this generation).

I expect MS to sell around 30-34 million consoles this gen. That I am pretty sure of due to its lower life span. I cant begin to guess how many Wii's or PS3's will be sold but they will both outsell the 360. By how much is another guess, I guess that I cant really begin to make at this point. However, I can say this: just because MS comes in last for units sold doesnt mean that the "lost". Hell, they have already won. The attach rate is jaw dropping and they are in the black for each console sold.

The PS3 has gotten a lot of flak this past year but expect them to overtake the 360 late late this year or early-mid 2009. WHEN they do all depends on the price and how their AAA games fair.

Xbox360 is around 17 million units sold now (not sure of the exact number) which is around 8.5 million units a year, which if you expect a 4 year cycle it would equal around 34 million units. So actually my target is right on. They would have expanded by about 9 million users, not exactly breathtaking when you factor in the fact that they came out super early in order to get market share. Another fact that strengthens my point is that less units were sold in the second year than the first. Expect this to continue.

Of course the ps3 is nothing to brag about either. They are selling the same amount as the 360 as of right now and that can only be considered a defeat by any analysts position. I really really dont understand your point about people buying a ps2. That only shows the strength of the brand name.

the ps3 hasnt even been out a year yet in Europe and just 14 months for the rest of the world. It takes time and its not unusual to have a low attach rate within the first 2 years. The people that just bought a console usually dont buy 4 games right away, it usually takes a few months at least to buy the 2nd and 3rd. Expect the attach rate to double or triple this year.

I just cant place the Wii in the same race with the PS3 and the XBox 360. Sure its a home console but a lot of the characteristics are way to different to compare so why compare it at all. Price, grafix, technology, just too many things where the Wii is inferior to the other two that I dont feel they should be taken as direct competition. You can tell Wii only sells consoles and games made by Nintendo. For a person who is very familiar with great games and franchises Im sure they would pick a PS3 or Xbox before a Wii. for Sony and for good reason as well. Even without any of the PS3 heavy hitters and higher price tag as well as x360 perfect storm game lineup. The PS3 still manages to sell neck and neck with the x360 worldwide as of the last couple of months.As for the states. The outsold gap between the x360 and PS3 has narrow which means the rate in which the PSP3 is begin outsold is slowing down which is a good thing for Sony. Now with GT5 and MGS4 these year. It is not impossible for PS3 to surpass the x360 in sales this year. Remember MGS and GT5 are huge games for the PS like Halo 3 was to the x360. So imagine Halo 3 but two times this year and this is on top of other things like PS3 price dropping to mainstream price and the eventual Blu win which could at least help the PS3 sales this year as well. I do believe the PS3 will catchup to x360 sales in Europe this year but it not catchup in NA until the end of 2009 after FF is released.

this is 2008 now and the ps3 has a stronger lineup and multiplatforms so far(in 08) is better on the ps3 Eg. The advent of 2 killer games both Being GTA4 and MGS4 and Then GT5. PS3 is around 9.6 million sold and X360 is around 16.6 million (WW), not that big a gap considering X360 was out a year earlier. Yes, Rattles the title is a little misleading, but the PS3 will continue to thrive, especially with a price drop. What people are forgetting is that the 360 will lower in price and will always be less inexpensive than the PS3. MS holds the lead on Sony, argubaly becuase it was released one yer earlier, but when you have the lead it puts you in position to make act instead of react. The 360 is not done. For those who say that MS has failed to get more 360 owners other than those Halo fans/old Xbox gamers (failing to get new gamers) I strongly disagree. As to declaring X360 a winner??? It seems most Sony fans/PS3 owners come in two flavors:
Flavor #1. Ps1/Ps2 owner who has fallen for Sony's Hype ("Toy Story graphics", "4D Graphics") and assumed the PS3 would just come in and destroy all the competition. At any price. With or without games. Why? UUhhhhh, because..... the PS2 did.

Flavor #2. The PS3 is an inexpensive Blu-Ray player, so why not buy it?

The problem is this whole industry is about selling games! While the perception may be that the PS3 is selling systems, is it selling games? Last year, game after game was hyped as the mega-system seller (Lair, R&C, Drakes, Heavenly Sword, etc..), and when they did not sell systems by the millions, and did not even sell that many games, then what? Well Sony fan #1 just ignores those facts, and points to the next absolute, can't miss, mega system seller coming out (MGS, FF, LBP, etc). They cannot conceive of Sony not running away with the industry. Which is why they often resort to statements like "everybody is waiting to buy PS3", "when the price drops to $299", etc... All the while Flavor Group #2 only bought it as a movie player anyway, so they could not care less about games (which explains the poor game sales).

Just face it. The 360 has sold and is selling great. It's sales in the US are stupendous, compared to the PS3. These sales alone will assure the 360 of success. The game library is second to none. And this library of games does not just fade away. New 360 owners have a vast backlog of games, (to them they are "new" games)to play, in addition to upcoming releases. (Kinda like what the PS2 has right now). Do not make the mistake of assuming that games development will just stop all of a sudden, after selling millions and millions of games, just because Sony has 2 or 3 games coming out.

Its like "The Wizard of OZ" (the original book, not the movie), where everything in Emerald City was green. The reason things were green was that everyone in the city wore green-tinted glasses. If you only perceive things based on what Sony has done in the past (with low prices and the vast majority of exclusives), it may come as a shock to you that things have changed. If anyone would ever bet with you that the first to 10 million wins they were high. X360 was out for an ENTIRE YEAR without fighting Wii or PS3 for sales. I would never give a machine with the abilities of X360 a free year in a race to 10 million, and yes I think X360 is a great machine just not as good as PS3 IMO. They cannot conceive of Sony not running away with the industry. Which is why they often resort to statements like "everybody is waiting to buy PS3", "when the price drops to $299", etc... Just face it. The 360 has sold and is selling great. It's sales in the US are stupendous, compared to the PS3. These sales alone will assure the 360 of success. The game library is second to none. I love it when people try to slam the ps3. i am an unbiased gamer and i have owned all consoles after the atari. Let me get straight to my point. If your gonna be cheap with buying a console, your gonna get cheap results. Personally, i love the fact that the ps3 was first $700 bucks. i wouldnt want to game with a bunch of little pubecent teenagers with cracking voices. Anyway , My opinion is that with the " on paper " specs of all 3 systems I knew that ps3 is superior to the other 2 systems in the hardware field , i also knew the wii would be intersting just because of its uniqueness and gameplay matters most attitude , it automatically gets a place in my household no matter what.

Now 360 vs PS3 .... again in "my" opinion
after i done my research it wasnt really hard to choose

PS3 games look worst than their 360 counter part in most 3rd party non exlusive incidents. 360 has more games as well not to mention an amazing live line up and support.
Ps3 free online and 1080p movies and games to watch/play on my 1080p tv. forums talked about how much of the ps3 they could utilize almost none wich made its " on paper" capabilites look kind of foolish.
I assumed games could be made bigger and longer with more content on ps3 tho since it uses blu-ray and assumed only exlusives and first party titles would get that benefit... I looked down the line up to 5 years and saw both systems with a steady base and both will have lots of games Good games.

However it seemed Sony was going for the center of entertainment while 360 was going for the center of your gaming needs.
Sont had more room to grow with its specs than the 360.
If the Ps3 power is not being harnest efficiently at the moment whats going to happend when developers actually learn to code for it?

Last week I bought my first next gen system (congratz to me )
wich just so happens to be a Playstation 3 , now im pissed and happy at the same time because

1. ps3 does not have many games and im not interested in any games until march and april and dates after those. pissed but i knew that when i bought it. i couldnt wait tho i had to get it while i could afford it . i might not have any spare money even if the price drops later also with that said. i knew i was only getting 1 of the 2 systems , for a long time or unless i get a hell of a raise and find more time between loving my kids and enjoying life with them wich i dont see happening.

2. Im happy to know where sony is headed with the ps3 and I enjoy not having to pay extra money for online multiplayer.

3. when developers get more efficient at programming for the ps3, the games will be bigger and more beautiful in 1080p with a little more room to play with than the 360 in graphics detail and in extra content on disc. also things like the complexity of physics and other calculations that ps3 is capable of handling to make games more in depth.

4.Im happy with the exlusive titles coming for the ps3 and would have had to buy one anyway because the exlusives that are coming for the ps3 are my " Personal" must haves .. the 360 exlusives are GREAT but simply are not my "personal " must have games.

5. last but not least. it really did cost me alot of money
but i got what i wanted . pissed and happy.

6. im thru typing i have more to say but i got my game on pause and right now i would much rather be playing my game then finishing up this post now that i think about it lol.

anyway just MY view of things and everyone will have there own view
