With the recent upgrades to the iPad such as retinal scan, the iPad continues to surpass Sony's Vita and Nintendo's 3ds in sales and could very well kill the handheld industry.
(3DS, Casual games, iPad, iPhone, Mobile, PS Vita)
Agreed Let the people flock to them. I don't care how powerful the next iteration of the iPad will be, what will distinguish a Vita from an iPad as a gaming machine is the quality of games available on the platform. Yes, the iPad might have good games but why on earth would I play on a touch screen when buttons are far better suited for gaming?
The fact that a company with a fruit for a logo is selling millions of iPads doesn't make the iPad the best portable gaming machine. I've seen lots of people apply this mentality and it annoys me - Apple products look good, sell well and they are overpriced. Then lots of people conclude that it's because they MUST be the best, completely oblivious to what the competition is offering.
I only read the part above this comments section, but the stupidity in it assures I won't read the rest. It's gonna kill the handheld industry? In what universe? You NEED physical buttons built in to the system and standard so developers can use them and make their games conform to the device. No tablet offers that.
Plus, for the price of a high end gaming PC for playing games for years, or two (3DS/Vitas) that you can go on the run and play with. Would you spend that much to play "games" like Angry Birds on a device that will be outdated in 6 months and not get any new apps/updates? Does iPad have 3D screens or dual analogs like the 3ds/vita? Nope. Nobody in their right mind would take that if they're real gamers.
I'm tired of typing so I'm done for now. What a stupid article. Plus, the future sure as hell wouldn't be Apple. It'd be Android. Droid does what iDon't.
Consumers were not duped into buying smartphones and tablets. If a product offers what the consumer wants at the right price it will generally sell.
Smartphone/tablets do more than just gaming, perhaps Sony/Nintendo should have considered this rather than just focusiing on gaming. Honestly, I love having access to a whole lot of apps, having a decent web browser, native movie playback support, change my UI to make it look and work how I want on my android device.
I use to be an avid PSP owner but I out grew it. I want more than just gaming from my device which I guess makes me part of the majority.
It sounds like you want more social aspects of a device. The PSP is an entertainment source, but the main aspects of it is to play games.
So you grew out of gaming from the sound of it. That's the main aspect of the device, everything else is just a dessert. That's why I love Vita, it has good games and I love it, the extra features are just icing on the cake.
Nintendo didn't take it into consideration but Sony did with PlayStation certified devices and PlayStation suite.
I cant wait for an Xperia Play 2 with the same or better specs than the Arc S. But I'll probably end up getting an Arco S which is also one of Sonys PlayStation certified devices.
He did say iphone as well... Im pretty sure those fit. Who the heck wants to carry a Vita, phone and laptop around? If your a kid then cool, lifes not that serious but come on. WTH do I look like carrying a freaking vita around in my pocket.. Lame
Everyone I know who has one actually. Actually I know more people who have android tablets.
But these people were and are not gamers. They would never buy a console. They seem happy enough to poke at a screen....wait 2 mins till a house is built/sheep is made/progress bar has filled and then poke it again. Rinse, lather, repeat.
Im either buying a nexus 7 or an ipad for games. Prob the nexus 7 unless i can snag a cheap ipad somewhere. I bought a damn itouch just cause i wanted chaos rings and to try a few other games. It was well worth it for the cheap price i paid, i stopped using my psp at the time because of it.
What gamer would want to miss out on the biggest explosion of gaming ever. Theres a shitload of excellent games but you mock them because of buttons. The same people turn around and praise Flower or Escape Plan which are gyro (motion) and touch. Basically sony does buttonless and its awesome but mobile does it and its burn it with fire? Some of the best dev's in the industry are making mobile games. Its not up to console standards yet but its making huge strides.
Here is my issue with comparing iThings and tablets to portable gaming systems....iThings and tablets ARE NOT gaming systems. And the people who buy them ARE NOT gamers. These things will not kill off gaming because their consumers ARE NOT GAMERS!
I was thinking about getting the Ipad 3 or Nexus 7 but idk which one would be better for gaming. Before anybody starts saying "Why would you wanna game on a tablet when their are consoles?" or something like that, i just think some Ipad and Android games look pretty cool and are cheap about like $5.
One in particular i'm looking into is Dead Trigger.
The ipad for gaming is like buying an xbox and only playing xbox live arcade games. sure theres a few good games but nothing like whats available on DVD. (ps3 has ps1 games sooo i wont use that as example)
if they can come out with some kind of controller solution, then it could take next step, until then AAA games will very difficult.
I own a 3ds psp and an Ipad, i use them for different things. if apple could get me some buttons and some great games then i wouldn't need my 3ds. Likewise I do tons of other stuff on Ipad with large screen that i would love on 3ds.
I think the article has a point except it's a bit (or a lot) one sided... I wouldn't say the ipad "killed" portable game devices but it has made it suffer quite a bit.
The numbers don't lie, the vita and ds just aren't selling as well as expected. I wouldn't blame it all on the ipad but more on tablets and smartphones in general...sure they don't have the typical physical buttons but people, kids included have managed to get by without them.
Case in point, my friend bought the new galaxy s II (or whatever it's called) and she bought the latest spiderman game, which looks identical to the current consoles, for 5 bucks. She tells me that her 6 yr old kid can't put her phone down cause that is all he plays. Now do you think she's going to go and buy him a ds or vita for 200 (or whatever it is now) plus a game or 2 for 40 or so (each) every few months when she can simply download a simple game that will keep him entertained for 5 bucks or less?
Yes, the ds and vita can run games better cause they are dedicated to them but the tablets and smartphones are gaining ground. It also goes both ways cause they keep remodeling these ds's and vita's and adding apps to them to compete with the tablets and phones...
I was considering buying a ds and a vita at one point but came across a deal on a tablet (not an ipad), for 200 bucks...got a need for speed game for free that looks like it belongs on a console, not to mention emulators for snes, and genesis (at the moment)...they're currently working on pairing it with a blu-tooth controller... The thought of a vita or ds is non existent now...just sayin'.
I play mobile games on my Galaxy 3 all the time when I take a bus or have downtime at work. Funny thing is what when I had a PSP and DS I rarely played those. Mobile games are only a few bucks tops and are perfect for short bursts of entertainment. I could never sit and hold a handheld for hours on end.
On the other hand, it was the opposite for me. As fun as these short "bursts" of game (such as temple run) does serve it's purpose, I still prefer taking out my Vita (heck even ignoring the NDS with R4) while traveling to work or even breaks. I even got a platinum trophy for Gravity Rush while riding at trains.
It's not that mobile games suck, they simply don't have the depth of a solid game. Heck, if the Vita or 3DS didn't exist I would use the gameboy color instead.
Ipad is a device that's built to do many things, with gaming being a minority of the device, shouldn't be compared to the Vita or 3DS, because the main idea/aspect of those 2 devices is TO PLAY GAMES....
The Ipad isn't meant to play games or give the same experience as a 3DS or Vita.
This is what i'm talking about; the title should say "hurting" but not killing. Tablets can be compared to gaming devices in terms of portability...the point is that people do play games on the go, and what do they take with them everywhere? tablets and phones...
this is what i meant when i said tablets and such were "gaining ground" because the more advanced they become so do their games. People forget that tablets existed years before ipads made them popular, and back then their use was indeed limited. Now you can do so much more with them including play games. face it, the ipad has turned non-gamers into gamers, even if you want to call them "casuals".
BIG developers are turning their console games into tablet and phone games for a reason. and they are even developing games solely for that market so as much as people want to say it's not meant to play games it's slowly creeping in that direction...one of the biggest selling games of all time is in fact Angry Birds...and it was not for the vita or ds.
if the vita or ds have nothing to worry about then why do they keep adding apps to their devices when a few years ago they didn't have any??... don't get mad at the current state of portable gaming people... yes the ds is the number 1 "portable gaming device" compared to vita but as impressive as the numbers may be they have been declining on a year to year basis... hell nintendo did that massive price cut less than a year of release and already they're set to release yet another ds version...even nintendo understands the appeal of tablets otherwise we wouldn't be seeing the wiiU...
shall we talk about the psp, and the pspGo? what will people do if they decide to give up on the vita to focus on another gaming device...perhaps a gaming tablet?? (hears heads exploding)
i'm not siding with tablets or saying that they're better for gaming in general, i'm just stating the current state of the portable market...deal with it.
Thanks for the comments, criticisms, etc. guys. I am not for one side or the other. It was just a question I had been running through my mind to ask and thanks to you guys I got great responses. And, no, I wasn't trying to get "hits". Yes, the numbers sold for each and every device vary day in and day out. The market is different for Nintendo, different for Sony, different for Apple. I cannot predict which will out sell the other and for me that's fine. I totally agree with AdmiralSnake when he said that the iPad is not meant to give the same experience as the 3ds or Vita. We buy these systems, devices, because they interest us, we want to interact with them, share them, etc. Whatever the case may be...even some of them may fade out of "popular culture" who cares? Its all about the experience. They all serve their different purposes in our lives. Whether it be to read a book in Kindle, schedule a meeting, play a game of Solitaire, play WOW or Call of Duty to blow off steam or relax, etc.
The article is somewhat TRUE I've seen countless kids playing games on a tablet whether ipad or android and less of what I once saw 5-6 years ago with the DS/PSP era. These mobile games are cutting deeply into the portable gaming market. The kids who play these mobile games are not really concern about graphics and how technical the games are. They play it for pure amusement.
The 3DS is only selling at a healthy rate due to an early deep price cut. However, the PS Vita is really struggling. I'm not sure if it has even sold 5mil yet.
Hmm...gotta tell my wife that that thing she uses for business is actually a gaming device. Wonder how many people dropped $400 just to play Infinity Blade?
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHH WHAT DO THE MORON'S WRITING THESE ARTICLES NOT UNDERSTAND ABOUT BEING UNABLE TO COMPARE THE 2 TYPES OF DEVICES. One is a dedicated handheld games system that anyone buying is buying to play game, you buy a vita or 3DS for any other reason and you are mad. The other is a multipurpose device that is almost certainly not being bought to solely play games on, or even as it's main function.... It's like saying the console industry is dead because it's outsold by laptops and PC's even the non gaming ones because they can also play some games.
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHH WHAT DO THE MORON'S WRITING THESE ARTICLES NOT UNDERSTAND ABOUT BEING UNABLE TO COMPARE THE 2 TYPES OF DEVICES
Hmmm...??? I didn't know how to tell the two apart? Then why did I make note in a reply I wrote that "each" thing has its own purpose? Just because the iPad wasn't manufactured just to PLAY games doesn't mean that it can't be counted out as another "source" for gaming, in addition to the functions that it already carries.
no but you can't compare it to a dedicated gaming machine, the Ipad is used for social connectivity and business related stuff, and then gaming etc are secondary things it does. Whereas with the others it's the other way round. I can say "IOs Market going down the drain" because laptops and pc's outsell IOs devices, doesn't make it true yet my PC can do everything the Ipad can pretty much...
Ipad has killed nothing, nor will it replace anything. If that were true, it would have happened a long time ago. The 3DS is selling like hotcakes and the Vita will no doubt be a big seller in the near future.
Portables will always stay strong; mobile tech will never stop them no matter how many yearly redesigns they make. You smartphone/tablet PR agents (Common, Godz, optimus, etc.) wait and see...
I think it is too late for Nintendo to get kicked out of the handheld race, SONY did great with the psp, and the Vita is not selling for a loss. Low sales does not mean certain doom, juts look at the Gamecube. 21 million sales, but Nintendo made profit on every single one and was able to swim with money.
Pretty sure most doom articles are just emphasizing on what's "current".
I am pretty confident VITA would do fine.. but I doubt would be near NINTENDO's overall software and hardware sales. I bet this gens dedicated handheld wars would turn out pretty similar to the last (DS vs PSP).
Wait so a ds is about £130 and a ps vita is £180 - £200 which apparently aren't selling due to them being a bit to expensive but a iPad which is over £300 is apparently sinking the handheld gaming console. Also I bet 99% of "iPad gamers" have searched online for a control pad to work on the iPad....
Go bite apples ipad losers. Games had buttons since before your ass was born. Nintendo amd Sony better lower their prices blah blah blah. Why dont they lower your salary at your job because developers work for what again money. Look mom no buttons de de deee.
I bought an ipad can anyone tell me where to find an highly enjoyable game like Animal Crossing is at?? Wait how about an beautiful grapic game like Uncharted is at?? All I got is Birds in Space I feel like an disgrace like an palm in the face. (sarcaism)
funny how this came up and then several articles on sony's quarter loss was announced the next day that contradicts most of the defenders in this thread....like i said; deal with it.
Let the people flock to them. I don't care how powerful the next iteration of the iPad will be, what will distinguish a Vita from an iPad as a gaming machine is the quality of games available on the platform. The tube is full of commuters with ipads. People play them on the go.
But these people were and are not gamers. They would never buy a console. They seem happy enough to poke at a screen....wait 2 mins till a house is built/sheep is made/progress bar has filled and then poke it again. Rinse, lather, repeat.
She spoil her kids though...which I think a lot of iPad owners do.

VITA console lifespan = ?

It doesn't matter that you're all right (which you are). He just wanted to get his rocks off by seeing your reaction. Sad, really.
