i'd totally be cool with SOCOM becoming Vita-only and Online-only. as long as they have the gameplay, single player would be a plus, i jus wanna kill people online similar to socom2 is that too much to ask?
Basically it makes sense that the PS3 strength has always been 1st party games and vita may be next.
In the article, President Yoshida also admits about having a difficult time making games on PS3 but is happy about PS Vita because it should be easier to create amazing gaming experience. Sadly, 3rd parties are already shifting their focus on the growing social/mobile sector, as opposed to the dedicated gaming sector.
"...because the social/mobile side is the growing sector in terms of the business now, they are very quickly shifting their development resources to be part of that growing market.”
This is what a lot of close-minded individuals here on N4G can't seem to understand.
Vita is a great piece of powerful tech. A PS3 in your hand and on to go, but totally unnecessary. Especially when a phone can do that plus 20 plus more practicle uses that the Vita can't.
if you think an Iphone can give you the same gaming experience that you had with golden abyss, wipeout2048, gravity rush, fifa, mortalkombat... then my friend, you should go and play fcking angry birds and stop comparing a true gaming machine with a fcking iphone. nuff said
There are just as many games on theiPhone that can give you that experience believe it or not. You just don't know because you haven't looked for them. But there are thousands of games for it. And again...it's not about being a true gaming machine, its about being a machine that can fulfill ALL your needs and requirements in everyday life.
The Vita doesn't provide that and for that price it really should.
While I don;t think much of iOS / Android games (controls suck), some Vita games are crossing over. These include Sumioni and Orgarhythm (or however it's spelt), which could be the first of many.
I love gaming dedicated handhelds as well but the masses into handhelds (mainly children) love stuff like Angry Birds. Its a very easy to pick up and play game and dirt cheap on I-Phones.
I still think there is room for gaming dedicated handhelds or 3DS wouldn't have pulled through. But while a lot of us love our dedicated handhelds people should remember that it still isn't the mainstream market. The target audience of handhelds is primarily children who want quick burst games. Not a full fledged Uncharted.
Its certainly not the end for dedicated handhelds, but the market has shifted to an extent. Regardless of if you laugh off mobile devices, its what a lot of the handheld masses are on now. Even Nintendo said they considered 3DS being a phone because of it.
@Ben_GrimM: I'm an avid gamer on my iPad and there is nothing on the iPad that is equivalent to Golden Abyss, Gravity Rush, or Mortal Kombat on the Vita. Even with the lower quality graphics, the closest you will get is old MK2 on your iPad with crap controls.
The closest anyone has come to the handheld console quality that is available on the PS Vita is Infinity Blade II, and it is an extremely repetitive game that relies on static environments that involve simplistic animations as opposed to fully AI an Physics implemented worlds with many NPCs and possibilities for interacting with the world itself.
So, no, you can't get the same quality on the iPhone/iPad/Android device.
The closest to similar quality in games comes mostly from turn-based JRPGs. Other JRPGs are either ported from PS1/PS2 and are toned down in many ways or have controls that aren't fluid and as easy to utilize as two analog sticks.
GTA3 is a good game, but has some of the most horrible controls on the iPad.
A phone has "20 plus more practical uses" than a Vita, but none of those "20 plus practical uses" includes gaming.
I honestly believe gaming should never fit in your life, you should fit your life around gaming, since that's what a hobby is and that's the effort it takes to bring an extra Vita in your bag. Anything else and you're just admitting you're a casual gamer, since that's the very definition of the term.
I could rant on forever, but I'll leave you with this: go play Dead Trigger, a game that's touted as 'THE FPS' for mobile phones, then go see a lowly reviewed Vita FPS like Resistance: BS, objectively I can't see how mobile phone games can ever be good.
Me a casual gamer? Hardly, in fact that is so not true that I almost threw up laughing. But when I'm out, I am out, I am taking care of business. There's no time for me to be invested in a full fledged game. If and when ever I do gameits usually no more than 15 to 20 minutes waiting for something. To wait for that amount of time and invest in a Vita only for those moments is a waste of money.
My life is fit around gaming, when I'm at home. And when I'm at home the 360/PS3 and even the Wii is what I game on. Why game on the Vita when most of those experiences can be found on the PS3 in front of a larger screen?
And I'll leave you with this, there are so much more out there in mobile land than just one FPS game you mentioned. This goes for Machioto too who commented above you. There are games that were designed with the iPhone touch in mind that work and play perfectly. Not every developer tries to emulate consoles for a mobile touch device.
Yeah yeah yeah, you're not a "casual gamer" well good. But funny how you fail to name anything worth while on a mobile to play and quickly brush off FPS, I reckon as soon as there's a decent FPS on the phone (that's 'IF' ever) you'd be all over it.
Yeah I'm sure there'd by a few decent ones in the bunch... but did you ever notice that you'd never play those games had they not been on a mobile phone? Strange how we just drop out standards as soon as it's 'convenient', and we all know what those type of gamers are termed, but of course we know you ain't one of them.
I have over 900 apps on my iPod that are games, and I can tell you rigt now, none of them come close to a dedicated gaming handhelds or consoles.
FYI: I also buy and download games I find worthy of my time. So you won't see any angry birds or temple run on my iPod. I even have some unreal powered games that cost 2-5 dollars and they too come no where close to what I can on a DS or psvita.
This whole Vita problem is like the 'chicken vs. the egg' paradox. 3rd party developers are looking too much at the install base of the Vita rather than just making games for the system that will maybe lead to a higher install base.
Games sells a system not the other way around. So i really wish these 3rd party developers will get their head out of their @$$es & take the risk. That is the difference from previous gens compared to this gen is that some 3rd party devs are not willing to take risks anymore.
I think Sony needs to focus more on having deals with Japanese third parties, cause most of their machines's success including the PSP has being mostly around the variety of Japanese developed games, & they have way too many western devs at their disposal.... Not saying they shouldn't support westerns, but their best western third party partner has being mostly Rockstar Games til this gen started... I think the rise in western games & FPSs is what kept the PS3 behind the 360 this gen... They have to think PS1/2 wise!!!!
I seriously don't know wtf Sony is doing, a lot of lack of Japanese exclusive games compared to their previous gens, and they know lots of 3rd party games from both regions are also available on other systems, even if Sony makes an exclusive content on a certain game, so far PS3's best selling exclusive games are GT5 & MGS4, 2 Japanese games, followed by games like Uncharted, God of War and other exclusive western first parties which have sold really well!!!!!
There are just as many games on theiPhone that can give you that experience believe it or not. You just don't know because you haven't looked for them. But there are thousands of games for it. And again...it's not about being a true gaming machine, its about being a machine that can fulfill ALL your needs and requirements in everyday life.

Dude, get your head read....The I-Phone is a piece of crap for gaming. I don't even own a Vita, which makes me sound dumb......But I do own an I-Phone (I gave the overated POS to my 3yr old to play kiddie casual homo games), I've got a PSP & it is better than an I-Phone for gaming, as it has the controls to handle more than casual Angry Birds crap. You can rave like a lunatic till your blue in the face about ALL these ranges of games I-Phone caters to, but your lying & you know your a f$#king liar, as almost every genre apart from a few casual friendly Plants Vs Zombies & 25 different Angry Turds, ALL THE REST handle like absolute crap on a 2" touchscreen.
I mean, mobiles are good to take out of your pocket if your at work & doing a particularly long session in the crapper, but in the end I would rather be playing a dual analogue stick Vita, that actually has workable, touchable, solid twin sticks, instead of some psuedo touchscreen abominations that handle worse than a 1930's Ford going full speed on a racetrack.
Fact is, mobile phones (as they are REALLY called, no f#%king smartphones, (as if they were that smart they'd s#$ck my c%$k, make my dinner, s$#k my c%$k again, then tuck me into shushy bye's do my housework while I'm asleep, thus disabling the need for an expensive, whiny wife, who's never in the mood), so no, there mobiles), mobile/cell phones are & should be phones 1st, & they seems to be, as most of the still cameras & video cameras in them are 3rd & 4th rate (especially the I-phones), & as handheld gaming machines they would barely even rate on the scale, as bloody touchscreens will NEVER replace a physical, real, set of twin sticks for shooters, racers, fighters, platformers, 3rd person adventures & every other genre. So, make a call on your mobile/cell & remember, thats what the piece of sh1t is, & when you get a big tumor in the side of your head, come back & rave about your "smartphone", & how it outsmarted you by killing you, ya dumba$$.
People should be lapping up the Vita, it is a revelation & Godsend to fans of handheld gaming,......hell, even just to fans of gaming in general. The crying shame is, that even though PSP sold far less than the way less pricey DS, it did make inroads & wasn't just another Gamegear or Atari Lynx, & it also has a tonne more great games than it is geven credit for, not to mention mods & such that allows me to play the entire catalogue of MD/Genesis & NES, SNES games & I believe, most other past consoles including N64.
To hit point though, I hope Vita & PS3 get another Socom.....& while I'll go against the grain of popular, mainstream mentality by saying I really like Socom: SF, I would like Sony to attempt to re-kindle that special spark that Socom 1 & 2 had. The maps were beautiful, gameplay was excellent, controls were pretty good I suppose, graphics lacked but did there job & kind of grew on you due to the game being the BEST EVER online console game...FULL F%$KING STOP. I have never had a better online experience, than the numerous ones & hours that Socom on PS2 afforded me. People who played it, were the last one on there team, with 3-4 (or more) opposition hunting you down, only for you to take them out one by one, know WTF I'm talking about.
Socom just had that something special last gen, it had the mitres touch, the team based games made you feel united like no other game since.
Without a substitute to Socom 1&2 in my gaming reportoire, I honestly have had a bit of a hole in my online gaming universe, & while I've enjoyed a tonne of awesome single player games this gen, & some pretty great online games too.....None have given me the experience Socom did, none have had that fun factor, mixed with tension, & the elated, awesome feeling of being the sole survivor & savior for your team. I mean, Call Of Duty just does not give you that kind of feelings.
In the article, President Yoshida also admits about having a difficult time making games on PS3 but is happy about PS Vita because it should be easier to create amazing gaming experience. He's not wrong, yes?

1. Most Nintendo 1st party games made in Japan sell well for Japan & West. Why doesn't SCE do that?
2. Why is SCE Japan Development Studios are not making many games or new IPs compared to western studios?
Where is the balance?
Naughty Dog's multiplayer team (or maybe a third Naughty Dog Team)
Guerrilla Games?
LightBox?
Sony'e SOE department?
Bend Studio?
Remaining former Zipper employees still employed by sony but working with another studio?
Repeat the Socom Confrontation fiasco and go second/third party?
