Teen Collapses After Xbox Marathon: Gaming or Bad Parenting To Blame?

Compulsive gaming strikes again, this time leading to a Columbus teen collapsing after a 4 day Xbox marathon just yesterday, August 7th, 2012. However, who truly is to blame here? (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Culture, Xbox 360)

His fault for playing games for 4 days straight. The game didn't say play for 4 days straight and it will help you accomplish "X" in life.

Stupidity is to blame! There are warnings everywhere as far as taking breaks during gaming. If you're told to give your eyes a break, common sense should kick in concerning the rest of your body! Like get up and stretch, go relieve your bowels, get something to eat if you are hungry, take a nap if you're yawning these are things that become pretty obvious when you push your body past its threshold!

I like gaming just like the next person, but it's not worth me keeling over for.

As for the parents they are not responsible enough to deserve children!

“He emerged from his bedroom during the four days only to pick up snacks or take a quick shower.”

Definitely the games fault.

Parenting maybe, really the kids fault. There is a reason Darwin awards are given out! And the gene pool does need a little chlorine!

First a stabbing, now some kid nearly dies playing Xbox what a summer.

Anyway, umm, yeah? Who else would be to blame? If he was 18 it would of been his own fault. None the less, yes its the moms fault because the kid obviously doesn't know when to stop.

Awesome parenting!

Neither, the correct answer is personal stupidity.

At least he died doing what he loved.
EDIT: Oh, he didn't die. Well, to hell with him then.

I'm curious about how he even managed this, I think most people would feel a slight dying sensation by the third day.
This guy is Darwin Award waiting to happen.

well, knowing gamers, he probably consumed a lot of energy drink (probably NOS) to stay awake.
Alos88  +   287d ago
That stuff is great in moderation, but I hear if you drink too much too often you crash pretty hard when it wears off.

I remember drinking a lot of Jolt Cola during LAN parties to stay awake. That stuff was so vile, but it totally did the job. (Probably because it made me too queasy to sleep?)

Im sorry but if you're a parent and you havent checked on your son/daughter for 4 days then you are a bad parent! simple!!
KreepyKritter  +   287d ago
To the defense of these parents, he did pop out of his room here and there to eat and shower...
On the other hand... how do you not poke your head into his room for four days? I'm obviously more nosy than these people.

As a parent of two kids, this is clearly bad parenting. What kind of parent neglects their child to seclusion of their room without checking on them for four days, other than a bad parent using a game console to baby sit. I check on my kids in the morning when they don't get up at their regular times. Four days without contact is insane.

My parents would not have stood for me playing video games for that long, they would have kicked me out of the house and sent me to the park to play. Then again I have good parents.

If he was my son,I'd beat him down the back with a steel chair and put him in the Yes Lock. You'd think 4 days of uneating meals stacked on top of each other at the dinner table would have made his parents worry a little earlier.

Bad parenting plain and simple. Gaming, like a lot of things should be done in moderation.

This is just bad parenting. I have 3 kids myself and they only game for an hour and a half each day. After that they have to go outside and play if the weather is nice or play with their toys in their rooms. Granted they are still young but it is best to start early when making restrictions rather than try to start after you have let your child do whatever they want in the past. Unfortunately there are too many parents who will ignore their kids and let tv and games babysit for them.

Jesus what game was he playing? I'm so bored...
omarzy  +   287d ago
How can it be bad parenting? The kid collapsed playing video games. Direct cause(xbox. he would not have collapsed without it) vs indirect(parenting. The parents could have taken it awy somehow, but they did not do anything to actually make the teen collapse) It is the teens fault.
Derpy  +   287d ago
The media is using events like this to give gamers a bad name. Many gamers know better and take gaming in moderations. Or at least I've never personally met a gamer that would do this. The very very small percentage of gamers that do do this are the ones at fault not video games. Of coarse when it's a child, the parents should be moderating the gameplay. IMO, when a child is alowd to do something like this it should be considered a form of child abuse.

Hmm... Played GTA San Andreas for 32 hours straights, followed by 2 more 18 hour runs. My wife (then girl friend) just slid food under the door every now and then. No showers were had those 4 days.

Lost 6 pounds and 5 vacation days...needed a day to detox after all of that gaming.

I was 22 at the time and even then, I don't think my body could handle something like that again, so it's surprising this kid survived.

Shame I seen something like this on 1000 ways to die, dude was playing a game for days, then when he rose up with anger after getting beat by a girl he collapse and died, cause he sat down for a long period and something about his blood not circulating or something I forgot.

4 days of school studying would have done the same thing. Moderation, people!
