OUYA, a crowd-funded Kickstarter project that started literally a month ago, has already collected more than $7 million in funding — and it still has about a day to go.
OUYA is a $99 Android-powered box open to any developer for hacking. That means you can crack it open, play with the hardware, and develop any kind of Android application for a television.
Open Source software and technology are the very things needed to help push technology forward. When regular people with good ideas can actually work towards putting them in action, then there's a real chance for true progress.
Right now i dont think there are many ppl trying to crack angry birds or whatever is the hot stuff on droid these says but when and if Call Of Duty appears on OUYA i bet my balls hackers will crack the little box and the game wide open. Can you think of a single instance where open and easily accessible hardware didnt lead to piracy?
Not really interested in pay-to-win models either.
As a start the console will probably host a large number of more casual games you might find on the phone, but that won't be everything. A cleaned up version of Final Fantasy 3 is already confirmed for it, and there are definitely companies out there who will see the Ouya and take it into consideration for games. Indie developers will probably see it as another avenue to consider outside of being PC exclusive and will look into the Ouya as a source of reaching more people who can't necessarily afford a PC capable of playing their games.
I understand your concern, though, and I agree that it might be a safe bet to stand back and see how it goes. Pay-to-win models also are horrible IMO.
I wouldn't call it cheap, definitely not "free".
What the hell are you expecting for $99 Uncharted 3 graphics.
Its not meant to satisfy your hardcore need for advance graphics but meant as a cheap way to enjoy gaming with out having to spend $60 on games plus $20 for DLC.
7 Million is nothing to MS, Sony or Nintendo and I doubt 98% of the world has even heard of it, making it hard for it to "crush" anything.

Yes, piracy does heavily affect PC games and that is with safeguards in place to stop piracy from happening. Now imagine how rampant piracy will be on an open source console that is being made to support hackers. Hackers don't add content to games, they hack them so that people can get them free or mess with the online code. PC modders create content for games they like. Make no mistake there is a big difference between the two people.
it also crushed the game cube, dreamcast, saturn, master system 2, genesis, snes, nes, commodore 64 and both ataris in weekly console sales.
But I dont think it'll offer much for the average gamer that home consoles dont already have. The indie scene is pretty big on home consoles now.
Only yesterday i was introduced to a game on PSN called rock of ages, which had a brilliant twist on tower defense and awesome visuals that were really different.
It'll be great for modding, and might push out some good games, but im not sure how much of a commercial success it will be.
Heres hoping though, something new would be nice after the hold Nintendo, MS and sony have got over the industry.
In months we will see quad core with 2 gigs of ram instead of 1 etc
This is played out already unless u want a bunch of clone indie games like there is now, just get a quad tablet etc. But for the price its nothing,so buy one,its the cost of a few games
