How This Little $99 Box Raised $7 Million In A Few Weeks To Crush The Xbox

OUYA, a crowd-funded Kickstarter project that started literally a month ago, has already collected more than $7 million in funding — and it still has about a day to go.

OUYA is a $99 Android-powered box open to any developer for hacking. That means you can crack it open, play with the hardware, and develop any kind of Android application for a television. (Culture, Kickstarter, Ouya)

"Crush the Xbox"; Xbox isn't mention once within the article.

This is getting tiresome. This thing isnt crushing anyone. It won't survive against the big league don't even see why people are hyping it up as the NEXT bIg thing. Can't wait for it to release so it can FAIL and say I told you so.

the controler looked like it hade ps3 buttons and isn't hacking bad
Triscy  +   286d ago
The term "Hacking" isn't really used all too properly. A better term would be "modding", and the type of modifications they're talking about supporting are in no way bad at all. It supports people taking control and having fun with the same console they purchased.

Open Source software and technology are the very things needed to help push technology forward. When regular people with good ideas can actually work towards putting them in action, then there's a real chance for true progress.

Really? They say it will allow people to root their OUYA and if you donate above a certain amount yours will come prerooted.

Right now i dont think there are many ppl trying to crack angry birds or whatever is the hot stuff on droid these says but when and if Call Of Duty appears on OUYA i bet my balls hackers will crack the little box and the game wide open. Can you think of a single instance where open and easily accessible hardware didnt lead to piracy?
DaThreats  +   286d ago
They should do more with the extra money than ship a few more consoles. Make some good commercials with it.

Show me what it can do and I'll think about it. Till then why the hell would I want to play any of my Android games on my TV? A majority of them are time wasters or knock offs of full games on my PS3/Xbox.....

Not really interested in pay-to-win models either.
Triscy  +   286d ago
Part of the point of the console is more to allow independent developers a wider opening to get their games on a home console, since getting Indie games on Xbox 360 and PS3 is extremely inaccessible for most people because Microsoft and Sony require payments and force people to go through all sorts of other annoyances to get their products on XBLA or PSN Store.

As a start the console will probably host a large number of more casual games you might find on the phone, but that won't be everything. A cleaned up version of Final Fantasy 3 is already confirmed for it, and there are definitely companies out there who will see the Ouya and take it into consideration for games. Indie developers will probably see it as another avenue to consider outside of being PC exclusive and will look into the Ouya as a source of reaching more people who can't necessarily afford a PC capable of playing their games.

I understand your concern, though, and I agree that it might be a safe bet to stand back and see how it goes. Pay-to-win models also are horrible IMO.
Soldierone  +   286d ago
Yeah thats what I mean by wanting to see what it offers before I jump on board. For all we know, it will just be a side console that never gets going and disappears before you know it. I hope it doesn't for the sake of indie games, but you never know.
PixL  +   286d ago
Final Fantasy 3 port is already available for Android https://play.google.com/sto...

I wouldn't call it cheap, definitely not "free".
Ju  +   286d ago
This remains to be seen. SW companies base their development on install base. This thing can ride the wave of Android gaming - but it sure can't ignite it. That would require millions of consoles sold. With the specs, it's not up to the task, and the target group is indie developers and homebrew. Its still a nice priced little box to play around with, but I doubt it will have an impact in console gaming for two reasons: $7M is not enough to push a high volume and second it's just not powerful enough to even compete with current gen consoles.

"Show me what it can do and I'll think about it."

What the hell are you expecting for $99 Uncharted 3 graphics.

Its not meant to satisfy your hardcore need for advance graphics but meant as a cheap way to enjoy gaming with out having to spend $60 on games plus $20 for DLC.
StayStatic  +   286d ago
No one likes pay-to-win , Free to play on the other hand is very good if done right.
Burning_Finger  +   286d ago
Bunch of suckers. I'm pretty sure this would fail badly.
Bathyj  +   286d ago
7 Million? Xbox probably spent that to develope their WiFi adaptor.

7 Million is nothing to MS, Sony or Nintendo and I doubt 98% of the world has even heard of it, making it hard for it to "crush" anything.
Knight_Crawler  +   286d ago
Gran Turismo took $60 million to create so yeah 7 million i s chump change for those giants.

It's essentially a $99 smartphone in a plastic box with a power supply running a TV app. Not that much R&D cost. Off the shelf bodge. No important branding or marketing to worry about. It's a boutique enterprise all around. It's a hobby toy that got a boost on kickstarter. It's sort of like a graphing calculator or a Timex Sinclair el cheapo home computer. It's not really on any big market. They are talking about launching with less than 100,000 units. That's Probably three assembly lines working four shifts for about two weeks. This is a tiny peanut of a project.

Title fail and flamebait opinion piece. How did this crap get approved?

Ouya = android/ios type gaming on your tv.

No thanks

What has this got to do with Xbox?
SolidDuck  +   286d ago
I agree the idea of playing phone games on my TV does not interest me at all. But the open source does. I was amazed by what people created in lbp. But a whole console that hackable I can only imagine what people will make for it. I'm interested for sure.
PixL  +   286d ago
Sorry to disappoint you but they will do nothing much. Android's been around for quite a lot time and you can get a lot of great utility software but in terms of gaming it's still EA, Gameloft and other big devs who create content. Do you think somebody's going to "hack" a great game? Games require a lot of work, not hackers.
Triscy  +   286d ago
And you're implying that "hackers" AKA people can't put in a lot of work? Indie developers are on the rise, and I'd rather see their next product as opposed to EA, since it'd probably have a little more imagination in it.
cleft5  +   286d ago
The problem is that hackers will be hacking the best games on the Ouya. They will be doing this so they can either steal the game or hack the netcode to give them an online advantage, can you say lag switch anyone. Hackers will put in the work to access any great game and that is the true problem. People are confusing hackers with PC modders, modders add content to a game whereas hackers just steal shit and make any online play absolute ass with rampant cheating.

shammgod  +   286d ago
Oh god.
cleft5  +   286d ago
Lets see, Microsoft sold 8 million Kinects at $150 a pop. So yeah Ouya has yet to crush anything, other than 7 million dollars worth of suckers that threw their money in the garbage on a open source console, which will mean rampant piracy and poor support.
Ju  +   286d ago
"rampant piracy"...lol. Yeah, like people will now "pirate" android games. All 5 of them. And they will hack those, too. Wouldn't that be easier with PC games in the first place?
cleft5  +   285d ago
Actually piracy is already rampant on Andriod games for PC. There was this one developer, Madfinger Games, that was planing on releasing an Android based game, Dead Trigger, for free later on, it was for promotional purposes I believe. But they decided to charge $.99 initially. Well piracy was so rampant for that cheap game that they immediately went ahead and release the game for free.

http://paritynews.com/softw...

Yes, piracy does heavily affect PC games and that is with safeguards in place to stop piracy from happening. Now imagine how rampant piracy will be on an open source console that is being made to support hackers. Hackers don't add content to games, they hack them so that people can get them free or mess with the online code. PC modders create content for games they like. Make no mistake there is a big difference between the two people.

How is that related to Ouya? If you want to pirate an Android game, you can do that. As soon as you can get your hands on the apk file you can simply install this on any Android device. The only safety measure is the market. There is no "DRM" like security in the APK. You don't even need to root the device. What those thing on the PC do, is probably run those APK on some sort of Android runtime. Ouya is an Android device - like any other. If rooted or not doesn't matter. I believe the Nexus 7 will simply sell more than this console. Yet, do we complain that it will lead to piracy there?
numonex360  +   286d ago
i had no idea the original xbox was still selling. crushing a defunct xbox abandoned over 7 years ago is not much of an achievement. maybe it can outsell the wii or ps2 in sales next week. it may take a while to catch the ps3 and xbox 360 in weekly console sales.

it also crushed the game cube, dreamcast, saturn, master system 2, genesis, snes, nes, commodore 64 and both ataris in weekly console sales.

Not bad for a console that hasn't been released yet.
SpecialK  +   286d ago
Its a great idea and it'll be good if it takes off. And if someone doesnt have a home console yet then it might be something worth buying.

But I dont think it'll offer much for the average gamer that home consoles dont already have. The indie scene is pretty big on home consoles now.

Only yesterday i was introduced to a game on PSN called rock of ages, which had a brilliant twist on tower defense and awesome visuals that were really different.

It'll be great for modding, and might push out some good games, but im not sure how much of a commercial success it will be.

Heres hoping though, something new would be nice after the hold Nintendo, MS and sony have got over the industry.

Lol this is old tegra 3,which tablet games look good but not as smooth since now u can adjust settings such as high to low graphics, why didnt they go with quad core instead,i would have paid double for quad, imagine a game like minecraft on tegra 3 then imagine how smoother it will be on quad core.

In months we will see quad core with 2 gigs of ram instead of 1 etc

This is played out already unless u want a bunch of clone indie games like there is now, just get a quad tablet etc. But for the price its nothing,so buy one,its the cost of a few games
