Developers did not anticipate the Wii becoming a phenomenon. The console's accessible nature is part of the reason for its success; the extent of button-pressing in Wii Sports is holding down Z to release the bowling ball while swinging forwards, and users can even swing the Wii Remote as a baseball bat. The new Wii U console will offer a revolutionary second-screen gaming experience with the GamePad, a controller that combines a touch-screen tablet and a joystick.
I agree and I think it will be better for core experiences than the Wii Remote, just look at the Madden, ZombiU features or games like Rayman Legends (multiplayer). Rayman Legends is really bringing something unique to the industry. I don't know if it's a game changer but it certainly looks promissing.
If he means innovation in the sense of a new way to play. It is possible but I feel it is going to be up to Nintendo to really push the touch screen features as I foresee the third partys are either going to go the gimmick route or making it only for menus (the latter being probable if both Sony and Microsoft for go touch based controllers) especially later on in the cycle.
