The Future Form of 3D Mario Requires a New Holistic Approach

The 3D Mario series has been searching for its sweet spot ever since it was first introduced with Super Mario 64. Since then, the game's seen open level design that focuses on exploration, linear levels designed like obstacle courses, and fixed-perspective levels modeled after the classic games - and each of these approaches has garnered quite a large fanbase. Which form should the series take going forward in order to satisfy as many of the 3D franchise's fans as possible?

The story is too old to be commented.

Well, if it were my choice, I'd say go back to basics. Make a game similar to Mario 64, but put a tad more focus on the visual look of the game. We already know that Miyamoto and Nintendo have the gameplay down.

Better yet, you could do something akin to Sonic Generations and revisit a plethora of older Mario gameplay styles with the new graphics.

The Super Mario Galaxy games were amazing. I'm wondering how they can possibly top them. I'm sure Miyamoto will come up with something. He always comes through.

I have absolutely zero doubt the next 3D Mario will be quality. I can't think of an upcoming game to be less worried about. Nintendo knows exactly what it's doing with 3D Mario. And no Miyamoto was not involved with Sunshine.
