What’s The Scariest Game Of All Time? (Part Three)

Continuing his quest to crown the most terrifying game ever made, horror enthusiast Mark Butler spent another fearful night in the company of intense fright-fests and haunting chillers. Scarred once again by the evening’s events, he reports on the traumatizing experience… (Culture, Doom 3, PC, Penumbra: Overture, PS3, Retro, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, Slender, Xbox 360)

I dont scare that easy, the only game i can really think of that did scare me some was the original Silent Hill, Dead Space freaked me out, kept me on edge but it didnt really "scare" me, i knew what to expect, Silent Hill though was a different kettle of fish

I must of been young when i played it, 14-15 maybe, i do remember diving over the sofa to turn the lights back on

i kinda thought fear2 was scary as hell with the lights turned off and the volume turned up on a stereo system. the equipment (tv/speaker) sometimes make some of the games better/ more immerse.

An article on N4G surfaced a few weeks ago regarding survival horror and my selection then still applies now.
PoSTedUP  +   1281d ago
oh yeah that game was great when it came out, omg imagine a vita port.. O_O.
TekoIie  +   1281d ago
That school level was freaky. Also one of the best schools put into a video game only rivalled by DS2's.

Nothing has changed..

The original Resident Evil launched the genre..

The first two Silent Hills took it to a new level

The original Fatal Frame and still the hands down champ (IMO) was so beyond scary that people couldn't finish it.

The original and best F.E.A.R. introduced PC and later console owners to Alma and some genuine scares packed into a shooter.

Condemned as a launch for the 360..still one of the most underrated horror gems ever

The original Dead Space was sci-fi horror at it of the best games this gen

Alan Wake..classy and smart shot in the arm for horror fans..deserves accolades..

Just my take as a huge horror buff..

Silent Hill 1-3 and Fatal Frame 1-3 are the scariest games I've ever played.
I think the Japanese are the best when it comes to slow tense disturbing horror.

Play Amnesia: Dark Decent at night, with headphones and the lights turned out. That game scared the bejesus out of me.
TekoIie  +   1281d ago
scared the crap out of this guy too ;)
ATi_Elite  +   1281d ago
1. Amnesia: The Dark Decent

1. SLender

2. Silent Hill

3. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl (all the under ground Levels are spooky as HELL)

SLender may soon be Number one by itself if I get courage enough to finish it!!!

Something is WRONG with SLender. I think the game is Possessed! I Never have jumped so much from a game.

I could never complete Realms of the Haunting, it was just too damned scary for me at the time. I was actually too afraid to load up the disk o.0

Fatal Frame 2 for serial. I played the game once and never finished or played it again because it scared the crap outta me. Im a Pussy if I don't get to carry a gun in a horror game

Haze, for all the wrong reasons.
Morgue  +   1281d ago
The only thing scary about that game was that I actually paid full price it. Then got the DLC maps for it.
johnsonbat  +   1281d ago
Dude full price?!
Morgue  +   1280d ago
Bought it when it was first came out.

Silent Hill 2 by a long shot. Dam game made me wet myself LoL
: P
Tonester925  +   1281d ago
I played Slender and I can confess that it's all hype.

It makes you jump but to me, a scary game has to leave you thinking about it when your alone in your room in the dark.

I have yet to play one of those yet.

I might have to try a Silent Hill game to see what all the fuss is about :-) If you don't see me on here for a few days, I'm in the mental hospital for seeing things.

The first few minutes of slender are kind of scary, when you don't know what's going on, how big the forest is or where the slenderman awaits within.

Beyond that, it's not much. I mean, it's free and that's great, but there are just way more scarier games out there.

Exactly! I have a surround sound system and when you look at him it does make you jump a little but that's it.

Maybe having the feeling that he's right behind you is the scary part.

It's a cool party game though

Afraid of Monsters, its a Half Life mod but one of the scariest games I have ever played.

Socom 4. Filled with so much bad that it caused a franchise to die, a studio to close, and my heart to break. Pure evil. Fvck Seth Luisi. Just in case he ever trolls forums :)
CGI-Quality  +   1281d ago
Socom isn't dead and Sony closed the studio and moved many of the members to other developers for multiple reasons. However, that's off-topic.

OT: From my experience (will get around to Amnesia this Fall), it's Siren: Blood Curse.
Blooper62  +   1281d ago
Agreed on Siren being pretty scary. It wasn't to the point to which you didnt want to play anymore but that hospital scene scared the shit out of me.
Sangria  +   1281d ago
Anyone know scary gamed that are not plunged into total darkness? I used to record videos of horror games, but most of the time we don't see anything due to Youtube codecs that flatten every dark shades.

(I don't consider Resident Evil 5 as a scary game)

Resident Evil 2 back in 98 the item managenament was something as a kid i wasnt very found off then the soundtrack and the zombies and lickers crawling around was a pretty scary moment just by thinking about it.
Then games like Overblood,Dino Crisis ,Parasite Eve 2,Alone in the Dark:New Nightmare and Galerians also offered me great scary times during that time.

Scary games for adults do exist but that really depends on what gets you scared in real life.

But the very first game that got me scared was Tomb Raider in 96 the T-Rex was frightning. :P

A fellow Galerians fan!? I must applaud you because not a lot of gamers know or appreciated the title back on the original Playstation. I loved how it made me feel that it was a horror from the killer's point of view sometimes......
FinaLXiii  +   1281d ago
Yeah Galerians felt pretty unique it always felt unpredictable.

REmake. Everything about it.
SlapHappyJesus  +   1281d ago
Condemned series and Amnesia got the horror feel down very, very well.

Instead of falling on jump-out scares, they weaved an oppressive atmosphere that actually created a good bit of paranoia in the player.

Re-playing the Silent Hill series with a gaming headset made me grew to another level of appreciation to the franchise.

When I am done, I will do the same with past Resident Evil games (PSX versions) as well to see what I have missed.

But on topic, I can't choose the scariest game of my lifetime because all of them appeal to a different side of fear from me. Even games that don't scare me, I appreciate the effort the have done to do so.

I know my comment sounds like the end of an after school special but that's how I honestly feel when it comes to my favourite genre :P.....

Silent Hill 1 is the scariest i have played, the other Silent Hills (2&3) may have been just as scary but playing 1 first when it released made an impact.
