Gaming is full of gimmicks, they come and go. Take a look back at 9 retro gaming gimmicks that faded away too quickly.
the only one that im glad no longer exists is the inability to save.
I think it depends. I can remember getting to Bowser in the first Mario Brothers game, and having a truly tense situation because, if I died, I'd have to start the entire game over just to beat it. It made those later levels incredibly rewarding. You don't get that same feeling from today's games. Aside from things like Demon's/Dark Souls.
Both Zeldas and Final Fantasy were NES games that you could save, but I see your point. As a kid, I remember Land of Illusion for Game Gear desperately needing a save. Points have evolved into killscores, stats, trophies/achievements, etc. I still feel like Death Traps still exist, I just can't think of a good example. I guess Dead Space with those gravity tiles that slam you into the ceiling.
Points are still around in terms of achievements/trophies and online multiplayer rankings.
floating platforms ftw
