What In the Hell Is Microsoft Trying to Do With Kinect?

Adrian Covert:

Apparently this Microsoft patent has something to do with using mobile devices with the Kinect system or using mobile devices with kinect built-in or creating a Holopac with your Kinect phone? I really don’t know. If Microsoft made a tablet with Kinect controls, that would be really awesome for mobile gaming, but I’m pretty sure that’s not what’s happening here. Let’s theorise and or clarify here so that I feel like less of an idiot. Thanks and God bless. (Kinect, Tech, Xbox 360)

Looks like some simple kinect/smartglass intergration. As all they have is a very rudimentary picture it's pretty hard to flesh out much more then that.

Edit: At least for me. (thought I'd slip that in there)

It has nothing to do with SmartGlass.

There are two patents:

1. to do depth mapping of the environment using a mobile kinect

2. to edit movies using Kinect. It's a little unclear what the 3D prop making is about though.

Is it true you can shape shift and you are made from smokeless fire?

OT: Looks like a more precise Kinect that can pick up a lot more details on its surroundings as well as objects and other devices that are XBOX compatible.

Might be like the tech Sony has in their smart watches where you can view what the camera can see on your phone. So you may be able to view what the kinect is seeing on your smartglass on Windows mobile.

This is simple as A + B = C. They are using the two devices to create a 3D image on the screen.

Object 13 = Object 21
Object 18 = Object 17

The Chair is the house and the Person is the creature on the screen.

Case Closed. Yes its really that simple.

kinda reminds me of the tech that Sony showed where the Vita's camera was able to make a 3D model of a room as they walked around the room with it, and super-impose objects into 3D real world surfaces that you could walk around and view from any angle. As you walk through the room, more data points were added to that room model, making it more accurate. This idea, but using a kinect-like depth sensor, seems to be what is in the patent. It would make for some really cool 3D object scanning possibilities, using a mobile kinect camera and waving it around an object to improve the resolution of the 3D scan.

Itd be fun to have an accurate digital model of my room that I could then destroy. Break all my controllers without losing money.

Giving it reason to exist?

Forced/mandatory integration with the Windows/Smartglass brand so it has to be used?

I hope microsoft learn from the mistakes they makes this generation. If the leaks about the x720 are true i hope they can successfully add this new features to hardcore games.

If they were to make Kinect enabled phones they could be used with the home unit for a VR system.
