Why free to play is not a death knell for MMOs

Developers are turning to the free-to-play model in order to maintain player bases and gain revenue. Is this a viable strategy? (Age of Conan Unchained, EVE Online, Guild Wars, Industry, Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angma, PC, Star Wars:The Old Republic, World of Warcraft)
