Star Wars: The Old Republic - The Free-to-Play Gambit

"Yesterday, one of the major players in the MMO market, Star Wars: The Old Republic, announced that it would be going free-to-play come August. Now, that’s a pretty big deal, considering the game has only been out about 7 months, a pretty meager timeframe for an MMO to start looking at the F2P model...What’s interesting, here, is the context, and the implications of such a mainstream MMO going F2P so shortly after release, this title, in particular."

The F2P model is far from automatic profit, but it's certainly proving its worth, lately. What does such a mainstream MMO going F2P mean for the rest of the industry, and is this a wise move? (BioWare, EA, Industry, PC, Star Wars:The Old Republic)

This big thing I had with this MMO is it felt WAY to much like WoW to gain a bigger audience than WoW itself. You have to have originality from what just about EVERY other MMO is trying to copy.

Sure, SWTOR had a few things to at least see some differences, but really when you look at it, its almost the same. This game was destined to go F2P, even with the SW name backing it.

WoW is pretty successful... but it wouldn't be if you took away the amount of Asain gold farmers who re-buy the game every time Blizzard bans them.
