Video games can no longer be considered children's toys or a passing fad, like the slinky. It seems that the games with which we grew up and still enjoy today are entering the mainstream of American culture. And kicking a little ass in the process.
In these days of the drive by media it's headlines first facts later. The Fox story on Mass Effect was a perfect example of bringing on people with no idea about a topic. Then afterwards having even more people sit around and talk about it based off the previous persons uniformed comments. It's sloppy but just realize that CBS, NBC, CNN, PMSBNC, ABC, all do this but with more important stories like the economy, war, and politics.
Look what halo 3 did. It was a hlf assed game yet it sold. Mainstream=bad for gamers.
as much as i hate the fanboyism of evil zhuk....he does have a point. hype sells...if its music, movies, video games....once mainstream its "cool". hell, i bought into the SMG hype and it fell short imo. mainstream = lemmings. think for yourselves ppl.
We need an Evil Zhuk (PS3 fanboy I think?) to counter Zhuk (360 fanboy)
I would say that mainstream media is very unaware on how video games as a culture and as an industry are growing and changing into a way of life in our modern day and age.
i will agree with you there. and welcome back Daxx :D however as ive learned with music once mainstream, the quality takes quite a hit. hopefully, which i dont ever seeing in this biz compared to music industry, the industry and quality as a whole doesnt take a hit.
I really believe that the mainstream media is bad for everything that has a voice or isn't what the good ole boys running media outlets want. So yes I do agree that Mainstream Media will do nothing but call video games senseless mindless killing sims. And they will not shed any light on the artistic role that video games have.
mainstream media..........WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR........ABSOLUTELY NOTHIN....SAY IT AGAIN. lol
mainstream media..........WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR........ABSOLUTELY NOTHIN....SAY IT AGAIN.
In short, yes. The only time mainstream media reports on video games is when someone dies and they blame it on a Mature title. FCUK the media.
cant fox news be sued by bioware for slander? i mean i kno theres freedom of speech but u cant make up suff about people thats not true and can cause negitive impact
They're as bad for gaming as they are anything else. It's free publicity, and I doubt many people changed their minds about video games one way or another based on this; it just drummed up gamers about a title released months ago and put it into the spotlight once again. Basically, how many copies of Mass Effect were sold vs how many were not because of this news? I'm willing to bet they didn't lose nearly as many sales as they gained because of the controversy.
Fox News is a joke...
As long as conventional news outlets portray games as toys for kids that should not contain stories, emotions, or scenarios that parody and comment on real life, there will be a problem. The real issue is that games are no longer toys for children yet they are definitely still perceived in the mass media to be such. To the Fox News reporters, 10 year olds are playing Mass Effect on their NES. In reality, games are now a major hobby, quickly displacing films in popularity, targeted and valued by young adults and adults. They need to be treated as such. Just as we wouldn't criticize the film "The Departed" for its violence and negative effects on kids, we shouldn't do the same with something like GTA.
