The home console generation is about to make a jump forward. Starting at the end of this year, our current generation of consoles will be taking a back-seat to the new and improved technology and hype that comes along with the new hardware. Think about it…another slew of games that will get our blood bubbling with excitement, the news feed full of hype/hate/and joy, brand new experiences that previously were deemed impossible on the only technology. The possibilities are endless…
/thread
:D But really, it is awesome.
A better question may be best series this generation, which had the strongest showings overall, it's easier to pick entire series than just one game.
In that case, I'll continue this thread the way it should have been started.
I like the Mass Effect series, Metal Gear Solid 4, the Uncharted series, Bioshock series, Crysis series (even though it received a lot of hate from certain trolls, I still like that it's a thinking man's game on the harder difficulties), God of War 3 (and even the HD PS2 and PSP remakes which I know don't count, but hey they were still better than most of what came out this generation if you consider all the crap we've been shoveled overall, plus their metacritic ratings are high above average) and several others I can't think of right now.
Daymn, so many great games.
Mirror's Edge is still my nr 1
And then games like Bayonneta, vanquish, neir and soon MGR all by platinum games, great titles!
Mass Effect Series, just wow
I could name uncharted and such, but every body else mentioned them.
Rdr and batman series are a huge wow factor.
Infamous is probably greatest superhero game ever for me.
And then we had that game company ... Again, woooow
Pixel junk and all the related games.
Borderlands, such a great experience!
The Prince of Persia, breath taking gfx.
And wow KZ 3, so much challenge!!!
RE 5... Breath taking action.
Dead Rising
Left for dead
Alan Wake (they shocked me, great game)
Warhawk, again wow
And Then Damon Souls and dark souls.
LBP
Blur
Forza 3
I can go on for ever!
MGS PW
Mk9
So many great titles!
definitely MW CoD4
Just great generation, and we are not done yet!
RDR was pretty fantastic though. Same with the first Bioshock
Demon's Souls and Dark Souls.
Demon's Souls was so loved that Atlus are keeping the servers open indefinitely.
Dark Souls is so loved that a PC petition was made and listened to by FromSoft/NamcoBandai.
No games are touted as being more for the core audience than those games. They don't hold your hand, unlike most of this gen's games. They don't have endless cutscenes to pad out the story. The combat is engrossing and addictive.
Simply put, the Souls series takes it this gen.
They were my favourite two. Out of games which you can only buy at the PS store it is Journey. Love it love it love it.
Also Call of duty 4, because it was a milestone for FPS (although a lot have taken a few steps backwards these days).
I dont think there's one definitive GOTG.
Next, there is no one game this generation and not on one console or PC because this generation had so many great games if one of these games came out last gen, even with last gen's graphics, they would be last gen's Game of the generation.
You can use Batman, Crysis, Infamous, Gears, GoW, Heavenly Sword, Bioshock, Unreal Tournament, Fallout, Dead Space, Demons'/Dark Souls, Folklore, Halo, MGS4, Uncharted, Red Faction, Mass Effect, GT5, and many, many, many more.
I don't care to even want to make that distinction in terms of a general statement, but if I was to make a PERSONAL statement, I would use a game that fundamentally played so differently that it's differences made the game enjoyable.
That being said, I would have to still give it to several games, but if I were to pick one I'd give it to Demons' Souls.
DS was so distinct in terms of it's game play and interaction that it literally was not done in many way before; the "raiding" of worlds, the assistance due to "summoning" characters, the notes, and the best part of all of them, not being able to directly communicate with them. That is so ingenious that it's still impressive.
That saddest thing for me is that I lost my game, It kinda depressed me for a minute, but I know that after MGS4 I will bet back on DS and hopefully get Dark Souls before the end of the year.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for the extremely large, beautiful, and immersive land in a 2006 game.
Mass Effect 2 for its excellent characters and engrossing adventure, especially the end with the suicide mission and all your hard work beng shown step by step.
Halo 3 for the hundreds of hours staying up til the ass crack of dawn with good friends in the matchmaking and map editor, and also it's enjoyable story that ended the first trilogy.
for the 360
Gears of war: Gears of war was the first visual king on the market and with the iconic chainsaw bayonette the gameplay and multiplayer was something to remember
Halo3: This was the final journey for master chief and was the main reasons to buy a 360 in the first place. Halo3 featured a ton of features which got me thinking how did bungie put all that in a single dvd space.
Forza2: No 360 fan can deny that forza2 made racing, tuning, buying, and selling one of the best assets to the game. Not even gt5 can compete interms of customization and connectivity.
For the ps3
MGS4: MGS4 single handedly erupt the world wide web being the first exclusive to receive perfect 10's from major gaming site! not only that the game itself, gameplay, cinematic, graphics, story... MGS4 is one of the only games that keep playing the single player mode in this modern warfare generation.
Killzone2: the undisputed proclaimed halo killer from graphics, to unique heaviness gameplay, to a 32 player online matches
Ps. I bathe with dove bath soap
* Story: The Halo factions spends millions of years and is spectacular. With the premise of Halo arrays being weapons created by forerunners, the covenant with their own story. The humans being devolved several millennia ago, the flood being the final test of the Precursors, the story is just so deep and is begging for a movie translation.
* Gameplay: Halo's gameplay is unique. The ingenious design of the weapons and vehicles and the control scheme that complement them. Killzone, whilst having its own style, is clunky and uninspiring in comparison.
* Multiplayer: Halo brought proper online fps multiplayer to consoles. With its various different playlists and abundance of player created maps with Forge and coupled with the great gameplay with vehicles and gunplay, Killzone just doesn't come close to matching it.
Killzone trumps Halo with its raw visual fidelity but even in this department, Halo has such a unique,
colourful visual style that is its own.
The myriad of wannabes Halo beaters speaks volumes for the quality of the Halo games.
Of course you'll get nob heads like that Septic dude above posting stuff based on his opinion like its fact when all it is, is opinions. Everyone has their own styles and tastes. Plus its COD every FPS trys to beat not Halo. I almost forgot how sensitive Halo fanboys can be. If you think a games better than any other you shouldn't have to write 7 paragraphs telling people about it. Who are they trying to kid? Themself or us?
"Killzone 2 is still not surpassed by any Xbox games or Wii games to date."
I think it's pretty telling that all you talk about are graphics for Killzone. When it comes to graphics, they sure are great for Killzone, but you can't get away as easily making the same comment about what matters most: gameplay. And in that regard, it's all a matter of what you enjoy in a genre anyway.
Septic is right though. Halo has the best MP of any FPS console game. If I voted fot best FPS this gen I'd pick Halo 3, it was extremely fun to play and just felt right. Bungie is a great dev and I really can't wait for there new multiplat game.
However for best console game my vote is for Naughty Dogs Uncharted 2 it had best story of any game this gen, Amazing graphics, fun MP, brilliant set pieces, the best voice acting in a game, great game play. The only thing it didn't have was cake :P
This gen isn't over yet, What about The Last of us ? and other games yet to be released.
"Killzone may look impressive visually, but you would have to be deluded to think that it even comes close to matching Halos gameplay."
You have to be deluded to think your opinion is fact. I found Halo's gameplay to be nothing special at all. The same goes for Killzone. In my opinion you guys are arguing about two games that wouldn't even make my top 20 for the generation.
My personal pick is Dark Souls, followed closely by Demon's Souls.
Third place would be tougher for me to pick but Metal Gear Solid 4, Heavy Rain, Bioshock, and Red Dead Redemption would be in the running. Uncharted 2, Borderlands, MAG, and Warhawk would ( probably ) finish out my top 10.
Killzone 2 was way ahead of its time and still is to this day. It has the best implementation of a class system in a shooter to date, with every class being able to turn the tide. The seamlessly changing game-types of Warzone has yet to be replicated in FPS and makes KZ the most uniquely dynamic MP shooter. The maps complement this style with so many different areas playing radically different roles depending on which gametype is coming next round.
I don't know if I would say KZ2 is the best game of this generation, but it's hands-down one of the most intense shooters and brilliantly designed multiplayer games I've ever played.
- Spectacular visuals
- Excellent gameplay
- Unforgettable final boss battle
Some of my other favorites:
- Valkyria Chronicles
- MGS4
- The Uncharted Series
- GT5
Tru
halo is fun, fruity and colorful
Well halos a 40+ mil selling franchise and KZs only a 6 mil or less selling franchise so of course more people would have that opinion of Halo. But thats not the point, to call someone deluded because of what they think is wrong. Everyone has their own opinion.
I don't like Halo, I could go on for ages about why but whats the point, I know millions of people love the game so who am I to tell them different and why should I care if they like it or debate them against it?
@Alpha I think he meant Graphics with that quote which is sort of true because Crysis 2 and Gears 3 are the only titles to really match KZ2s graphics in my eyes on the 360.
Also the gameplay in KZ2 is great, its the controls and weighty feeling that most people have the problem with. For me I adjusted and learned quick and have no problem with the controls. I do wish they made them more floaty and casual but thats only to attract more people so the game could have gotten the recognition it deserved.
@rmx687
Exactly people never mention the good things KZ2 did. You hear people talking about spawn killing and all that crap but that only happened when people didn't play their classes right. The KZ games really do have you working for the win and one or 2 enemies sneaking off to the enemies side and holding it down there could turn the tides of a match in minutes. Plus the atmosphere in the game was unreal. Also KZ2 paved the way for better looking games this gen. As soon as that game released every dev was trying for great looking games. Oh and I think the KZ games have some of the best AI I've seen so far this gen.
You play a COD game and when an enemy takes cover you just go into cover and he pops back up in the same position, In KZ the enemies go into cover and sneakily start firing at you from all different parts of their cover or from a prone position and they try to flank you a lot. Sneaky little buggers. Theres no pre lining up shots in that game. I like that shit in games
You actually had to work at it to be good, it wasn't generic like other fps so you couldn't just pick it up and spend minimal time to get the hang of it.
Sadly, that's why most people hated it, like septic above.
People like that are the reason we have a COD every year and no change in the game industry.
Funny how I only own a pc now...
I am simply calling it as it is. With a statement like that, I doubt you ever played the game.
@Mainsqueeze
While my vote for kz2 being the best game this gen, I have to agree. While it was a fun fight (and hard as hell on the hardest difficulty) it defiantly wasn't anything special.
and it really makes you sound like a hypocrite calling people who deny that the game looks that good fanboys.
And it makes you look like an idiot saying that. First off, no shit it was cgi, I said that in the comment you replied to.....
There have been numerous reputable gaming sources that have confirmed the same statement about the comparison between the game and the cgi trailer> IGN, gametrailers, and gamespot. Just to name a few. Who do you have backing up your claims??
The AA they had in the cgi trailer was horrid not to mention just general textures and the overall color doesn't compare to the final game. Hell even the cqb holo scope was on backwards in the cgi trailer.
There is something wrong with your eye sight if you think that game dose not look good. Your talking to a guy that has NO consoles and just dropped $3k on a pc just a few months ago (that stomps ANY game on ANY console) and I still comment on how good that game looks.
Stop trying to make yourself look like your educated in the gaming world to make any kind of criticism like that. It's simply making you look quite foolish.
http://www.gametrailers.com...
Killzone was created specifically to compete with halo so that the playstation could have it's own sci fi fps. That doesnt mean kz copied, but That alone shows the impact halo has had on games.
Halos story is much deeper and more interesting in my opinion. There is a reason why Peter jackson wanted to turn halo and not any other game into a film before it fell through.
As for gameplay and weapons, there is also a reason why halo is backed far more at MLG tournaments than KZ. every weapon in halo looks and operates completely different and fills a very specific role on each map. It's not just a case of "this weapon has a bit more recoil yet more power" or "that weapon has a faster rate of fire but is a bit less accurate" with Halo.
Aside from the cool look of the helghast, nothing in killzone is as instantly recognizable as the art design in Halo. Structures, guns, etc all have a much more unique look in halo.
I could keep going for a long time as to why I prefer halo over killzone really but at the end of day it's what you like more.
Demons souls - Multiplayer wise
Uncharted 2 is my favourite..
they want an easy soot'em up game
Darks souls had more enemy variety, great level design with a connected open world(nevermind the other examples of great level design such as Sen castle), more of everything(weapons, magic etc) and a better healing system/bonfire system(imo)/ Dark souls was better designed imo but the online side of it as lacking compared to Demons, I also found Dark souls to have a consistent difficulty whereas in Demons I was breezing through it after a while
1. I'm gonna voice my opinion even though I mostly only play PC Games, I feel I have gone next door enough times and played on my neighbors consoles to get a feel of the best console games this Gen.
2. I'm gonna only pick games that are Exclusive to Consoles. Sorry I can't just pick one either. I gotta mention some high quality titles. Titles that I really enjoyed and that I would love to see on the PC but in a more PC type of gameplay.
So here we Go!!
1. Red Dead Redemption
2. Killzone 2
3. Uncharted 2
4. God Of War 3
5. Killzone 3
(Why no Wii games? Cause I've been playing Wii games on my PC since Day 1)
Here's why i picked them:
1. San Andreas to me is the greatest console game ever and RDR had that feel to it. Nothing else to say.
2. Guerrilla Games should be making PC Games. They are AAA+ PERIOD They shut everyone up with their great devs skills and made an epic game on console that had a slight PC feel to it.
3. Heavy Rain has a high emotional experience that is unmatched on the consoles BUT UC2 beats it out cause UC2 has so much Gameplay variations.
4. God Of War 3 this is the DEFINITION of a console game. Rapid non stop gameplay, mini bosses, Huge End level Bosses and a good story, Perfection.
5. Again I can't stress this enough I want Guerrilla Games on the PC. These guys have pushed the PS3 better than ANYONE! They friggin added physics to some volumetric smoke in KZ3! NO ONE not even Naughty Dogg or Santa Monica has done that!
Hopefully next Console Gen goes even further as Consoles become even more PC Like!
If you think about it , the mass effect series is one of the most ambitious, well thought out series ever to hit our medium. There is a sheer amount of originality and depth to the universe that Bioware has created . Its a universe that is so deeply constructed , filled with rich, immersive stories and characters. It feels OLD, like it has been around forever , like StarWars and StarTrek. I APPAUD Bioware for what they have accomplished with the series , its and amazing feat for not only games but for storytelling in general.
I could write a whole thesis paper about why i think its one of the best series ever , instaed read this, its a great read!
http://io9.com/5886178/why-...
1. Mass Effect
2. Dragon Age
3. Star Ocean
4. Fallout
My personal list also includes Demon's Souls, Killzone 2, Skyrim, Batman AA, Dragon Age, Infamous, Borderlands, Dead Space, Call of Duty 4, God of War 3, Alan Wake, Bioshock, Assassin's Creed 2 and finally Grand Theft Auto 4 was an absolute masterpiece.
Uncharted 2
MGS 4
Batman Arkham Asylum
God of War 3
Bioshock
Other viable contenders:
Red Dead Redemption
Little Big Planet (if only the loading and online lag weren't there it would have made my top 5)
Killzone 2
Mass Effect 2
Halo Reach (Halo 4 may replace it)
Gears of War 3
Uncharted 3 (I enjoyed part 2 more, but it's still a great game)
Heavy Rain (Beyond may replace it)
COD: MW4 (the first Modern Warfare set the tone for shooters to follow)
Assassin's Creed 2 (Assassin's Creed 3 may replace it)
Super Marion Galaxy
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Haven't gotten to Skyward Sword just yet)
IMO all of these games make-up the showcases of this generation.
Fun: infamous
Cinematic: uncharted 2
All round: god of war 3
Gears 1 was damn good too.
Best open world: toss up,...infamous and mafia 2
Honorable mentions:
Metal Gear Solid 4
Red Dead Redemption
Twisted Metal
Uncharted 3
God of War III
Heavy Rain
LittleBigPlanet
ModNation Racers
Call of Duty 4
Bioshock 1 and 2
Killzone 2 and 3
Resistance series
inFAMOUS series
Journey
Rock Band 2 and Beatles
Rayman Origins
worthy mentions have to be :infamous 2, uncharted 2,super street fighter 4 and valkyria chronicals
Rubbish, I say. I propose an alternative.
One list for PS3 exclusives: Heavy Rain, LBP, Infamous, etc.
one for 360 exclusives: Fable, Alan Wake, Forza, Gears, yada yada.
One for Wii exclusives: Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc.
One for PC exclusives: um... not really familiar with PC games.
And one for multiplats: Assassin's Creed, CoD, Crysis, Saints Row, etc.
I think that would work out best for best of the Generation.
It's hard to believe that there's nothing worth purchasing a Wii console, for (software-wise).
I have "fun" playing the Nintendo Wii. How well a game plays - will always be the most important aspect of gaming, to me.
Seriously, KZ2, GoW3 and Uncharted 3 are great games. If you think those were the best experiences you had this generation that's fine.
I had FUN playing Galaxy and NSMB, just like I had FUN playing Vanquish or Saints Row The Third. I had fun playing Kirby's Epic Yarn and I had fun playing Donkey Kong Country, the same way I enjoy Rayman Origins and LBP. They are all games, some people just like games.
Saying you have fun with games, isn't some subtle defence mechanism. People have friends and family, and sometimes a group of 6-8 people don't want to watch me play Uncharted or God of War. This is where things like the Wii, PS Move and Kinect have always shined and some of the most fun I've had has been playing those 4 player Wii "Shovelware" titles.
They're games that offer both gameplay & graphics, but a game's looks, isn't always an indicator of how well it plays (same goes for average looking games).
-Think of it this way-
Would you ask someone out, purely because they are good looking (without speaking to them beforehand, thus not knowing their character)?
MGS4 or Demons' Souls for me
I personally dont mind them but know alot of people that were really but off because every 15 min a cut scene would appear and last for about 5 minutes.
I would say overall Mario Galxy 2 is the winner being that it is enjoy by all ages as where MGS4 was only enjoyed by a certain age group and Metal Gear Fans.
It's similarly foolish to say a game can't be the greatest of the generation because it catered to a specific audience.
I think he likes it. A lot.
1.Uncharted 2
2.Mgs4
3.Xenoblade chronicles
4.Rayman origins
5.God of war 3
6.Super mario Galaxy 2
7.Heavy Rain
8.Skyrim
9.Starcraft 2
10.Gravity Rush
Awesome disagrees for giving my opinion.
Doesn't change the fact that people do it.
that game is a masterpiece, almost brings a tear to my eye.
It's such a shame KZ3 turned into CODZONE. KZ2 is my favourite FPS of all time.I really hope KZ4 comes back in KZ2 gameplay.
If I had to choose one BioShock. It was extremely unique with one of the most amazing soundtracks ever produced IMO.
There are too many criteria to choose one game though. Even though Bioshock and ME2 affected me the way they did, I still had way more fun playing Just Cause 2 for 100+ hours.
Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, Halo 3, Forza 4, GT5, GTA 4, COD 4 etc how the hell can you pick one from that amazing bunch :/
Fus do rah me beasties.
Portal 2 for balance and production.
Anymay MGS4 for me, still remember how i played it till 2AM the day it came out.
2.- Xenoblade Chronicles
I think you're confusing what makes something overrated to what's just popular.
Best game this generation!
But I would certainly include
1) Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
2) inFamous 2
3) Dragon Age: Origins
4) Demon's Souls
5) Fallout 3
6) Dead Space
7) The Saboteur (a personal favorite...everyone will disagree with this one, I know)
