PS3 Poll Police: Why, oh why, is the 80GB canceled?

The Poll Police need your help in deciphering the reason behind Sony's action to get rid of the 80GB model of the PS3. The 20GB is long gone; the 60GB has vanished; now the 80GB is fading away? This only gives people the 40GB left to pick up and it's, quite frankly, lacking in features the other models proudly displayed. Rumors abound as to why the model is leaving -- what's your opinion?
Why has the 80GB been pulled?

The SKU was never cancelled. Sony said it was Limited at E32007.

I'm happy I snagged an 80gb while I had the chance.

I agree. Didn't Sony say, the 40G (with BC) is the only SKU to be produced? They just kept the 80G because it sold well (which actually contradicts the recent reports). But AFAIR they cut costs with the 40G model and I bet their loss on the 80 is just to high to justify keeping it on the market. So, it just ran out, like the 60G did before.

Yea Sony said it was the limted edition motorstorm bundle. Just be glad that Sony is actually dropping the price of the PS3 and adding stuff at the same time.

i dont know. But im sure some of the "all knowing" people on this site will make some crazy predictions (and obviously they'll be completely right).

if sony are pulling it, it does seem like sony is getting a bit confused about how they're positioning the console. M$ does seem to have a target for each sku, where sony keeps chopping and changing. its somewhat ironic since the main standout point thats visible to the average consumer is the difference in HDD capacity, which is easily upgraded anyway! Unless they are reverting to a 1 sku model, which saves confusion but makes you wonder what they'll do with the 40gb sku as its not as capable as the 80gb, god knows what they are doing!

Comon sony, this is supposed to be your year - stop the confusion! :O)

But...that's what they do. One SKU. The 40G model.

Lord Cheese3464d ago

Thats what i'm saying though - if they move to a 1 sku approach, its great for clearing up confusion, but isnt the 80gb far more capable in terms of ports ? Is sony planning to just drop those altogether and just stick to the 2 usb/no multi card reader etc?

Nothing wrong if they do, its certainly one very reasonable way to keep costs down, but seems a bit wierd to build a system with a load of features and slowly take them out...

I don't know. I mean, in all honesty, the 40G would do all that what I'm doing on the 60G right now, and that is, playing PS3 games.

I was comparing Burnout Dominator on my PS2 and PS3 recently, on the same 42" screen, and the PS3 version is by far better, because the PS3 scales it to 1080i. But, if, e.g. I would have a better TV with a better scaler, that wouldn't matter. And I only did that to compare. I hardly play any PS2 games on my PS3, heck, I have too many PS3 games to really have finished all yet.

I like my card readers and the USB ports, but I am pretty sure, I would enjoy the games the same way if I wouldn't have those. Its just a convenience, not a necessity. So, for someone who just wants to get into the game,I think the 40G is exactly what people were asking for. If thats the one they keep as their solely SKU, so be it. I was looking for a second one, and I would rather go for price then features ATM. But I still want to wait until its down to $299, easier to justify. Sure, if there would have been a 80G out there with the features, I would have gone with that one (and sold Motorstorm, which I already have).

The PS2 business worked pretty good with the slim version. And this one had 0 features, compared to any PS3 model out now.

The last chance for backwards compatiblity and its gone, a slap in the face for all would be consumers and for all those who paid over the odds for the release models. Those who have the older models and arent bothered about playing ps2 games shoulg flog it on ebay, buy the 40 gig model and spend the xtra 200 dollars you will get on games, thus increasing the attach ratio up and pushing the sku's sold
