Is Free-to-Play ‘Fun’-to-Play?

Antony writes on Unigamesity: "I recently downloaded a free-to-play title on Steam by the name of Blacklight: Retribution which seemed like it would be an adequate investment of my time in light of the fact that the game had received positive reviews from a number of sources which I find credible. Unlike a large multitude of gamers, however, it came to my attention that free-to-play titles support an economic model which substantially empowers paying players over non-paying.

This is a topic of contention for me for much the same reason why I feel upset whenever I purchase an apple at the supermarket that looks like every other but, for some reason, is incredibly lacking in taste. " (Blacklight Retribution, PC)

Some are but some can grow dull real quick. The thing about some F2P shooters. Some turn into a grindfest just to get promoted/level up not only that but to buy better weapons. This dull process just makes paying for weapons and extra with real money looks more appealing.

Yeah I tried Blacklight: Retribution and it was pretty much the definition of pay to win. That said, I look foward to Hawken and Mech Warrior Online.

Depends

The good: PSO2, Tribes, MechWarrior

The Bad: APB, any game that lets you pay to win.

F2P can stand for fun to play because need to stay fun to play constantly or else they loose their player base and it dies. The ones that don't die and don't make any money.

It's all down to how it's structured, if it's pay to win then it's generally not very fun for the average person who doesn't want to go spending all there money on the game. if it's free to play with the additional option to buy cosmetic items etc then yeah it can be fun and work well.

Only when it is not Pay-to-win.

So far I've played World of Tanks, Moon Breakers and Tribes Ascend and they all wind up the same or me: fun at first then become a grindfest of bore. Moon Breakers was the most invested one of the three where I actually bought one of the packages with real money. Yeah, I easily ruled the servers with my upgraded planes. I'm a big fan of space games so I'll always play it now and then.

Another thing that those three games have in common : whenever I played them I've always wondered wouldn't be it great if they have an offline singelplayer mode/campaign that has the story to explain what's going on. I mean at least explain how an early war Traktor tank end up fighting a horde of Maus supertanks in WoT.
