In Memoriam? (Kind of) Remembering Final Fantasy Versus XIII

1up - Word has it today, from 1UP's sister site IGN among others, that Square Enix's long-delayed Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been quietly taken out behind the woodshed to put a bullet unceremoniously into its temple as a compassionate act of mercy killing. If true -- and I'm not going to even bother with an attempt at journalism to inquire for confirmation, because there's no way the company will offer a comment to the press until it makes an official announcement one way or another -- this news is at once shocking at not at all surprising.

Lol, next week we'll see "Final Fantasy Versus Still In Development, New Details To Be Revealed"

I was just watching The Straight Story and it kinda appeared in my thoughts

Canary4289d ago

Well, if anything comes from this manufactured controversy, it'll either be SE saying "lol, yeah, cancelled."

Or, just maybe, they'll treat us to something of substance. Like a release date. Something more than the half-minute traiilers we've had to go on for the past... Christ, what is it now, seven years?

WeskerChildReborned4289d ago

Ahaha i hope it's still alive though. I need to see Versus XIII.

Lucretia4289d ago

i think its insane how people took this rumor this far. and am amazed square hasnt said anything yet, perhaps because the rumor was made on the weekend, but still, people are so gullible

wishingW3L4289d ago

The rumor has been going for a few days now and Square is still silent. I think it was cancelled for real and that makes me so sad... FFvs was the game of the gen. THE Final Fantasy game. My most anticipated game of this gen! But now my heart is broken without a single ray of hope. ;_;

The Great Melon4289d ago (Edited 4289d ago )

I would feel the same if this is actually true. I looked forward to this generation because of this game alone. FFXIII looked pretty, but it was no where near as arresting as the dark FFvsXIII set in some alternate present. I'll take this rumor as just that and wait for the Tokyo Game Show to get an official confirmation. Unfortuately though I have a feeling that I won't hear anything from the company about it.

I find it terribly sad that the only games I look forward to from the Japanese Square Enix are games like Tomb Raider or Deus Ex that they developed indirectly through the assets from the recent acquisition of the western studios at Eidos. Prove to me Square Enix that you still able to make eventual classics.

greenpowerz4289d ago (Edited 4289d ago )

Kotaku claims they have inside sources that said this to be true. The weight of this franchise could be reputation killing if these guys got it wrong or was just making it up for hits, m claiming this without feeling sure of themselves. This is why the entire gaming media world is reporting on the lead.

BanditGamer4289d ago

Game of the gen based on 2 trailers?? My goodness you fanboys take things to the extreme. I really hope it isn't cancelled now. Just so you can see it's just another game!

BanditGamer4289d ago

I wonder if people would be in such feverish denial if this were not a PS3 exclusive. Would people even care?
Based on the quality of recent Final Fantasy games, I'm inclined to believe they would not. Since however it is a PS3 only game, N4G believes it is a godlike game and cannot be cancelled. All this based on ZERO gameplay and a couple of trailers.

DigitalRaptor4289d ago (Edited 4289d ago )

Ah here we go, yet another jackass using the "PS3 fans on N4G" line as an excuse to dismiss the game.

Son, this game has always looked more interesting than FFXIII and even its sequel. If XIII had stayed exclusive to PS3, I still would've found more interest in Versus since its world, characters, story and gameplay all look infinitely more intriguing and most definitely more mature. Its story was written by Kazushige Nojima (writer for FFVII), certain key people who worked on FFVII: Advent Children are also working on this, and Tetsuya Nomura is heading production for it. There are a lot of great minds working on Versus XIII, that simply were not there for the sorry XIII and its sequel, and that's no coincidence.

Sorry to say, but those are the facts that form my opinion and the opinion of a lot of others, not just on N4G. It's a great setup for a classic FF game, and it doesn't even seem like you know very much about the game, as indicated by your belief that they've shown "ZERO gameplay and a couple of trailers". I'm sorry that you think watching trailers is the only form of research into an upcoming game.

We know far more about the background to the game, the gameplay mechanics and world elements than you seem to think, and it's the FF franchise fans of the Internet, not just the "PS3 fanboys on N4G" that have been compiling all this information to get a better idea and context of what the game is going to be like. http://www.finalfantasy-fxn...

And ZERO gameplay... that's a good one. Here you go. http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Airships, cars, vehicle-combat, A-RPG, World map, summon hunting(like FF8), Tps, setting, style, music and so far story too. Lemme see if I missed anything, alot of people call me a Sony hater on this site BanditGamer = Argument invalid

We have a ****load of info on the game, and some trailers/ It's everything that was ever good about Square-soft/Enix games thrown into one.

Hopefully all of this recent coverage will compel Square to reveal more information. Versus and Metal Gear were my primary reasons for purchasing a PS3. I'd like to see this confirmed or denied by Square in the very near future.

The Great Melon4289d ago

Even if they don't reveal any more information, I would simply like to hear something from them that establishes FFvsXIII as valued game to them.

Final fantasy 13versus has been cancelled to be replaced with a remake of final fantasy 7!

Irishguy954289d ago

Would prefer Versus at this stage, I'd prefer a new game over a remake, don't get me wrong though, I want FF7 remake too

Elda4289d ago

I again think this is Kotaku tactic to get Square to reveil something about this game because we haven't heard anything about VS-XIII since Jan 2011,hopefully it works & we'll here something from Square.

Glad that I absolutely can't stand subscription services.

Petebloodyonion2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I don't recall Sony forcing you to subscribe like nobody forced you to go to Blockbuster to rent games instead of buying them.

SonyStyled2d ago

Pay-per-view was almost cheaper than the cost of gas and rental fee from Blockbuster. Blockbuster doesn’t exist today. Are you being sarcastic?

Final Fantasy XV Review – A Royal Road Trip

Gary Green said: With my fondness for (most) Final Fantasy games and my side goal of finishing off games in my collection with loose ends, a return to Final Fantasy XV seemed inevitable. It also serves as my third Final Fantasy platinum trophy after VII and VIII, a reasonable substitute since Final Fantasy IX is nigh on impossible to master.

Final Fantasy 15 director reveals why he left Square Enix, and announces he's working on 2 new JRPGs

Final Fantasy 15's director has revealed why he left Square Enix back in 2018.

Hajime Tabata famously resigned from Square Enix two years after Final Fantasy 15 shipped in 2016. In a special livestream at the time, Tabata announced his decision to resign from the company, cancelling three of four new story-focused DLC episodes for Final Fantasy 15 in the process.

FF15 is like FF13 its subjective people either like it or hate it.

raWfodog134d ago

I liked it. I haven’t played the royale edition yet but I’ll get around to it one day.

gold_drake134d ago

no no, 15 wasnt trash.

15 had a tremendous difficult development.

FinalFantasyFanatic133d ago

I really believe 13 was better put together and more complete than 15 ever was.

EternalTitan134d ago

Found the pathetic troll.
How is your jobless life going?
Dot worry, you will never get a job or a girlfriend haha!

Hofstaderman134d ago

Man inherited a train wreck and was expected to release this game in under two years after it spent a better part of a decade in development hell. At one point there was even plans to make FFXIII Versus a musical. He did what he could.

TheColbertinator134d ago

I didn't care much for XV and I always wanted the original vision of Versus XIII but I think the dev team did what they could to salvage the project

Inverno134d ago

And yet people still blame him for the game turning out the way it did, rather than SE for the horrible mismanagement of 13 and Namura for being overly ambitious.

Dwarrior134d ago

Whatever the behind-the-scenes went on over the many years, at the end of the day it was a radical change in direction that I could not go along with. Also why I never bought 16.

gold_drake134d ago

this is also why Sakaguchi (spelling) left.
