CryEngine 3 comes close to CG quality graphics with the works of Puppy and Mark Ranson

DSOGaming writes: "Normally, we’d include these screenshots in our weekly CryEngine 3 gallery but they’re so hot that we felt the need to share them with you as soon as possible. A lot of gamers think that CryEngine 3 is inferior to CryEngine 2 (because Crysis 1 looks better than Crysis 2), however CryEngine 3 can achieve CG quality graphics as can be seen by the works of modder Puppy and 3D artist Mark Ranson. We really hope that next-generation games will look this good and if you thought that Project CARS' car models looked phenomenal, wait until you see the one created by Ranson. Enjoy!" (Cryengine 3, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

some one should make a movie using this engine, have crytek use it to show how powerful this engine can be or something
Marz  +   822d ago | Funny
they should make a game that shows how powerful this engine can be...
WeskerChildReborned  +   822d ago
That would be amazing.

The car doesn't look...very good at all.
I think even GT5 on PS3 has more realistic lighting this.
It lacked self-shadows (see rear spoiler and side mirrors) and the tail lights look hideous.
Come on Cry Engine 3, I hope you can do better than that.

BUT I really liked the water and dirt particles on it. Looked pretty awesome.

Exhibit B (GT5 - PS3):

Both real-time.

HAHAHAHAHAHA- Don't be ridiculous, Marz. lol

But seriously.
When will people learn that the engine doesn't make 3d models through magic? Anyone can take a fairly recent engine, put some high res models in it, and run it "real time" on Jesus Christ's $10,000 supercomputer, like all of the "next gen" engine demonstrations we've been seeing lately.

Real impressiveness comes from an engine's ability to be efficient.

Er, what CG movies have these folk been watching? I see jaggies all over the place and horrible bloom lighting, not to mention these are very closed in sets with not much else being rendered, all the horse power is going straight to the few objects rendered on screen.

Can we make headlines like this illegal or punishable by a kick to the nuts for spreading misinformation and further fueling petty fanboy wars and what not? please?!

And that's because everything is rendered in real-time. I bet that you also failed to read the title as it states that those screens come 'close' to CG quality. Downsampling is possible with CryEngine 3 so they could capture some pullshots without jaggies but then again, you'd complain about the screenshots being bullshots.
bostoner  +   822d ago
Where does it say these are rendered in real time? I'm not disagreeing with you but I don't know where your reading this information.
annus  +   822d ago
@bostoner

What? The whole point of this is that it isn't pre-rendered. If it was, it would just be 'cgi'. And I'm not sure what sort of disability would be required to render screenshots without anti-aliasing if it wasn't in game (I don't understand it even in in-game), but they shouldn't be working with the hardware if they don't know to turn on AA while rendering.

Also it's CryEngine, why wouldn't it be real time?
Patriots_Pride  +   822d ago
A Halo movie using this engine would be boss!!!
Welshy  +   822d ago
i said it in an earlier Crytek article, and i'll say it again.

When they build a fun game to PLAY around those graphics, then i will take them seriously.

After 30 minutes the graphics are just there and dont stand out anymore while playing, about 3 hours into Crysis 2 i thought i was going to die of boredom.

At the very least outsource your gameplay so we can actually enjoy the surroundings!
Patriots_Pride  +   822d ago
Have to agree with you...Crises 2 was burty but I turned the game off after 2 hours.

Crytek has the engine but the lack talent when it comes to making a game.

MS should just buy them out.
Welshy  +   822d ago
MS should definitely not buy them, not because they're not worth buying, but because of MS track record with in house studios.

I have all 3 platforms, so no fanboyism here, but MS don't know how to run their studios.

RARE being a prime example.
beerkeg  +   822d ago
The Crysis games are excellent, I'm sorry you didn't like them. Crysis 2 wasn't as great as the first games but it was still a very enjoyable and good looking game.
starchild  +   821d ago
Really? I had a lot of fun with Crysis 2.
Dazel  +   821d ago
Crysis 2 was a let down but Cryengine 3 can be used just like Unreal tech, who knows what other devs will come up with next gen.
BIGBOSS08  +   821d ago
THIS! crysis 2 was boring as hell and the graphics were pretty nice but not that special.
Gorbenshore  +   822d ago
Amazing engine

claud3  +   822d ago
just amazing and i hope to see this in action soon
TronEOL  +   822d ago
I really want to say something about those car pictures, but I'll just keep quiet on that one. But I can say those pictures the frog and weird monster-person look fantastic. I'm not sure if we need video games to look like that, but I sure as hell would want it.

A Good idea to bring the arcades back :P

Add in super high visuals, gadgets for "reality" maybe rooms to get full fledged experience. And all of it works like the old arcades. Put in 50 cents, then 50 cents when you die etc :P

Want to play super high end games? Well spend thousands on a computer, or come on down to the arcade :D

(I miss arcades, only reason I'm saying this)
PAYNEinc85  +   822d ago
What kinda PC could do these graphics in real time? Because thats just amazing
solid_si  +   822d ago
Until they are demonstrated in realtime and in-game, i will believe.

Shades of killzone 2 shown on E3 2005, remember how Sony said it was realtime and only to admit a year later it was Pre rendered hahahaha lol.
_-EDMIX-_  +   822d ago
? Whats to believe? Its a powerful engine. Thats it. Saying "oh Shades of Killzone 2", uh CryEngine will clearly beat that little CGI. Really based on us not even seeing a lot of it. Plus its on a PC (Clearly more powerful)

look, i like games like GT but if PD had this and did it on PC, it would hands down BEAT ANY GT GAME! In terms of graphics. Please, let us not get stupid and say subjective things about a technical fact.

"oh i will believe" blah, blah, blah! It will be a beast engine next gen, when next gen systems can actually even run it. I would like to see the first Crysis made (ported) on PS4 and 720!

(and yes I'm very much aware Crysis 1 was ported to PS3 and 360 through Live and PSN).....theres a reason why it was disregarded. lol. What Crysis was on PC is something a lot of gamers need to play. Clearly if you played the port....you didn't play Crysis, but another game with the same name.
Gorbenshore  +   821d ago
Yeah, it was disappointing that Killzone 2 was pre rendered.
Soldierone  +   822d ago
the frog one is really impressive. I don't really get impressed with cars though. Shinier textures, and with proper lighting, you could make a crappy render look really good....especially if its just a picture.
gtr_loh  +   822d ago
Now... To crash that GTR using the CE3's physics...
Iceman X  +   822d ago
This is good but they just NOW getting close to this:

http://www.gtplanet.net/for...

GT5 PS3 still looks better. But they ARE getting close.... All this in-game pics!!
_-EDMIX-_  +   822d ago
When it comes to something like this, the better engine clearly wins. NOT DEVELOPER, OR IP etc. That being said, if PD made a GT with CT's CE3 on PC LOL!

If Polyphony Digital made a Gran Turismo with Crytek's CryEngine 3 on PC, it would BE THE BEST LOOKING RACER! Best in terms of tech being way better on PC. I'm a huge GT fan and i'll tell you that, if a team made a racing game on PC using this engine...it would look better then GT5 by default. Period.

Oh does a Nissan 350Z look better on a system running 256vram or 2gig GPU? I mean really people? A finished game looks better then this mod. (well you don't say!) With something like a racing game, you don't get close. You have an engine thats better and hardware to run it....you win. (i say this of course in terms of graphics ONLY) PD is amazing with what they do with how little they have to do it with. Their hands down the best team in all gaming when it comes to racing games. A person can get a GT game and pretty much never play another racer and be fine with that, that can't be said about most games. Even that being said, i just can't ignore the actual fact that better hardware will always equal a better looking game. (in terms of realism) when your trying to render something from a real life object, there is not subjectivity to it. More polygons make it look more real.....period. So one can't just say "well that apple looks better with less polygons" cause that technically means, its rendered actually less real.
Roccetarius  +   822d ago
CryEngine 3 may look very pretty, but how many will pay that hefty price tag for licensing it?

Not many, when they can get a cheaper one with similar, but less stellar results.
Firebird360  +   822d ago
Maybe it's just because these are pics and not video but they aren't anything special. Forza autovista looks better than this.
SageHonor  +   822d ago
But what about the gameplay?
Incipio  +   822d ago
Meh. GT5 still has that beat. That GTR needs more polygons.

Check out this GT5 model:

Halochampian  +   822d ago
errr look at the tires. And it looks very plastic-like.

Also rain does not effect the car in GT5 like it's being shown in these photos.
xer0  +   821d ago
I have to agree, the GT5 models still look better. The only thing going for this cryengine model is the rain and mud effects.

The jaggies and angular shapes in the cryengine model don't help.

Kos-Mos  +   821d ago
But how about making good games?
2pacalypsenow  +   821d ago
The frog look real good , the GTR looks ok not as good as GT5 tho
snake_eater  +   821d ago
GT5 and Forza 4 graphics already look awesome...instead why not improve the dam damage system?
Jamaicangmr  +   821d ago
Yeah the car render isn't impressive at all. Everything else is top notch.
meh I rather have a game.. Infinite amount of cry engine screenshots.
jeenyus  +   821d ago
Both Forza 4 and GT5 top this besides the waterdrops.
PGR4 had some waterdrops though. The CryEngine3 Nissan looks meh, really. Frog is nice, but unless these are put in motion it really doesn't matter. I think I've seen better looking cars on that ICE mod (GTAIV).
WeskerChildReborned  +   821d ago
The frog and the picture below it looks stunning.
