On Blending Gameplay And Story Together In The Last Of Us

Siliconera met up with Naughty Dog to talk about developing The Last of Us. The upcoming post-apocalyptic game follows hardened survivor Joel and a young girl Ellie. Players will follow the characters as they leave a quarantine zone and travel from Boston to the Western area of the United States. In our interview, Bruce Straley, Game Director, talked about how Naughty Dog started development on The Last of Us and the game’s crafting system. (PS3, The Last Of Us)

oh man, this game is going to be so freaking exciting to play. Awesome story, great characters, and solid gameplay. Just like any other naughty dog game, it'll be quite the experience.

The kind of experience they're trying to build with this one is commendable. I wish more developers focussed on transferring the pressure to the player that the characters are feeling, and the consequences of our (and subsequently their) actions too. The constant, moment-to-moment pressures of survival, which includes resource management and making crucial and snap decisions mid-gameplay is something I'm very much looking forward to, as well as dealing with the sharp AI system that will make the scenarios even more exciting, dynamic and realistic.

I can imagine it to be a heart-pumper from start to finish. Every scenario I've watched so far has had me gripped, and as a player in the control seat come 2013, I can imagine those feelings being amplified to a very exciting level. TLOU will most likely be my favourite game of 2013, tied with BioShock Infinite which I can't see being anything short of incredible.
