While I'm doubt that Nintendo would be able to capture the greatness that was Banjo-Tooie (best platformer of all time), I still would love to see this franchise saved. Hell if they released a true next installment for the WiiU I buy the system despite being region locked.
Last year Nintendo released there first region locked handheld, if this wasn't enough to confirm Nintendo has no plan on making the right decision and going region free, then a statement made by the head of Nintendo, Iwata, during the pre e3 Nintendo direct video pretty much confirmed it. He states that Miiverse will only show other people in your country if your wondering.
hmm I do think a new Banjo would be awesome, but I don't think it being on a Nintendo console would help. Rare games on he xbox are pretty awesome. Perfect Dark, Kameo, Viva Pinata 1&2, and Kinect Sports are all very good games. I just hope there is something big planned for good ol' Banjo.
Don't think MS will be willing to sell off RARE because of Kinect. Kinect games suck.. but some of them do sell a lot.. Kinect adventures and the sports game had decent sales right?
also, Microsoft hasn't milked the rare franchises enough yet. just one perfect dark game and nuts and bolts.
they might sell the Banjo ip though.. or maybe this whole negotiation is to get banjo in the next super smash game and not about the IP or the developer at all.
"Rare games on he xbox are pretty awesome." -sockboy, 1.1.6 comment.
That's the STUPIDEST thing I've heard about this. RARE games right before and forever after Nintendo sold the brand to Microsoft were all complete garbage! No game was a tenth of what their original games were. Banjo, Conkrs, Perfect Dark, 007, etc all sucked compared to the original games and even as stand alone titles.
Sockboy, show me that you own some original titles to compare them too, because the new games they pump out are garbage compared to the originals. I've only played the demo because I'm not an idiot to spend money to gamble on Microsofts remakes, and Banjo Kazooie demo was the 2nd thing I downloaded when I got my Xbox.
I have about 40 N64 Games out of picture of my collection attached, but I own and have played Banjo Kazooie and Tooie, 007 Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini, Conkers Bad Fur Day, Donkey Kong 64, and a few copies of Killer Instinct on the SNES (black cart in the photo), along with Solar Jetman, Battletoads, and a couple Snake Rattle 'n' Rolls on NES which RARE also developed. I've also played them all for at least 4-5 levels each, much more so on the N64 games.
I'm also a homebrew game developer on the NES. I know what I'm talking about when I can say a game sucked and is not of quality and a developer should have done better work. If you think anything RARE has done since Microsoft acquired them was of quality, you should never voice your opinion on gaming again.
Please, go away, the world of gaming didn't just start with the Xbox kid. You are really not qualified to judge sequels to games when you have never played the originals.
Yea, at this point it's just obsession, and a very strange one. I've never seen somebody so indignant at the fact that a system is region locked to the point where EVERY comment they post on a Nintendo article is about the region locking.
Either this guy is a master troll, or......I'm not gonna go there, don't wanna offend anybody.
I mean this in the most non-offensive way possible too.
Region lock sucks and it's nothing but a way to make more money of the consumers making them buy 2 or 3 of the SAME console,if you don't believe that .. then excuse me,you are an idiot.
One of the best things about a console (PS3 & PSvita comes to mind) is the ability to play imported titles, you do know that lots of JRPGs and some other great titles (like Super Robot wars for example) never become localized, with a region free device I can still import and play my imported games without the need to BUY another Japanese Wii-U just to play my imported Japanese games or even my Europe games.
Bottom line, anyone who thinks this is NOT an issue is nothing but a tool & a fool, with all do respect.
"Region lock sucks and it's nothing but a way to make more money of the consumers making them buy 2 or 3 of the SAME console,"
No, It's bad for them when you keep buying games from a different continent. It kinda fuzzes their marketing. If game A releases in region X, but then everyone buys it from region Y. It overthrows their whole marketing. Then releasing it in Region Y seems so pointless.
I never bought 2 or 3 of the same consoles. You make it sound like everyone is buying 2 or 3 of them same. As if that is some marketing strategy. Hardly anyone does that and isn't viable. Every sold copy isn't always tracked to where it's heading. Usually it's just checked for local consumption.
When a console is region locked, it's not meant to be sold outside it's own region. You make little to no sense.
",you do know that lots of JRPGs and some other great titles ... never become localized"
I'm sorry mister Weaboo-robotto. I think I missed those highly important japanese classes to play imported games.
I get it, it's easier for everyone and the feature is welcome. But Your reasoning is not even half baked.
If they didn't dick us around and release Japanese developed games 2 years after the fact in other regions, this wouldn't be an issue at all. The bottom line in my mind here is that if gamers want to play a game, not allowing them to play it from the day that gamers in a different region get to, is going to cause all of the problems that they don't like, such as console modding, piracy, etc.
The easiest solution? Have region locking, but on a game by game basis. If say for instance Europe is to get a Japanese game, but 3 months later, then lock that game. 3 months sucks, but is reasonable. Companies want to wait and wait and wait, and have gamers beg, THEN maybe you get a game. Forget that. Make a decision, and deal with the consequences. If you aren't bringing it, then don't bitch when people find a way to play it anyway. If you're going to bring it, then don't take forever and a day to do it. Plain and simple.
i will never understand how Microsoft could be so blind, don't they realize what they had with rare?
they had instant mascots, the likes they could never create on there own, i don't care how many shooters they want, every console needs its stable mario/zelda type games, even Sony is lacking them this gen, but Microsoft had them, the golden opportunity to take games like banjo and kameo and make them classics, support them and make them games that everyone will remember, but no...
if rare was what it should be there would have been many sequels and new games by now, unfortunately all we get out of it is avatars and kinect sports, am i wrong in thinking people would rather have real rare games? is that just me?
congratulations MS the curtain is drawing closed on this current gen of consoles, its a huge missed opportunity that we never got more perfect dark or banjo, its a damn shame there was no more kameo or viva pinata, its a crime there was no conkers (even as a XBLA game with achievements)
and the worst part is all the new games that could have been.
Rare might not be profitable to MSoft now, but i doubt that MSoft would risk Nintendo reviving the brand to its former glory. If they did, the price would be high, like firstborn high.
Im not to interested in Banjo, i would prefer Killer Instinct, awesome.
Its more a case of everything that Rare made, Microsoft bourght the company then over the next few years all the major players there left so now the company is made of people with very little game experience.
Its a smart more for Nintendo to re aquire the rights to the franchises but leave the studio when they originally sold Rare with the Banjo franchise rights
They should give the job of a new Banjo game to Retro Studios!
It is probably more like they made so much more money with avatars and casual games, they have no need for major players or they force them to work on Halo. I'm pissed at everyone for not buying PDZ, Conker, Kameo, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Banjo, Viva Pinata and buying Halo instead, it's all your fault we have 4 jillion versions of Halo and only 1 Perfect Dark Zero.
I think it had more to do with the fact that all the good Rare employees left to form other studios. Free Radical comes to mind. :)
It's the same with Lion Head. Black & White 1/2 and Fable were amazing games. Then, the team split up. Many of the best developers from Lion Head formed Media Molecule...and the rest is history. ;)
Don't be such a fanboy. Not everything Sony buys, turns to gold. Sony has destroyed franchises and closed studios. Just a few weeks back they closed Zipper Interactive.
If Nintendo wanted to buy Rare, Microsoft would probably sell them.
What franchise did Sony destroy? Zipper wasn't putting out quality, which was a fault of their own, not Sony's. None of Sony's other studios have closed and the closest thing to it was the merging of Liverpool and Evolution Studios.
I don't entirely agree that Microsoft destroyed RARE, but they certainly aren't like the RARE of old (the reason is anyone's guess).
I think you got that wrong, Sony let's developers have free reign unlike MS. CGI-Quality is right it was Zipper's fault, but I hope they find work again.
How the hell is it MSs fault when a studio is ruined, but not Sonys fault when they have to shut a studio down? It wasnt Microsofts fault when Rare messed up on perfect dark zero, it was Rare's. It was a shooter like the previous game, kinda hard to mess that up unless you're careless or make a dumb radical change.
Microsoft aren't as evil or stupid as most here claim.
How many studios have Microsoft closed this gen? Lets be realistic here, Sony closed one studio and merged two others, all while buying two key ones (Sucker Punch / Media Molecule).
The guys who made Rareware awesome back in the day don't work at Rare anymore. They all left. That's why Perfect Dark Zero was crap. It's just some development studio now. Nintendo would be better off just getting the rights back.
How about combined First(ish) party endeavor between MS and Ninty? Release the Rare games on WiiU, Xbox and 3DS only. Keep Sony out of the loop and split the profit.
I think it would be the best thing for the franchise. Microsoft obviously don't know what to do with Rare's back catalog of amazing intellectual properties maybe, the best thing is to give it to someone that could make good use of it.
Maybe they could work on it together and see a release for Xbox 360 with smartglass, Wii and 3DS.
lol does anyone bother reading it's obviously fake they are saying Nintendo is trying to buy RARE back just for Banjo Kazooie lol makes sense right. I would love for nothing but all the RARE IP to go back to Nintendo but come on people use your brains this is obviously fake from a no name site trying to get hits.
I would be happy with that but it would be easier if rare went back to making games instead of avatars and kinect games (although sports was good). MS needs some games in different genre's. At the start of the gen they had it on lock with wrpgs, jrpgs, srpgs, fps, tps, racing exc. Now its fps, tps, racing, fps fps fps fps fps tps and kinect crap. Why not make a 2d banjo like donkey kong country returns? Then make a 3d one like the old ones and snowball that into a kart racer? Bring back Kameo, Perfect Dark, Conker, Killer Instinct, and make another Viva Pinata. You paid out the ass for the ip's and studio and lately only use the studio, at least let a small team make xbla games from the ip's.
Rare still has talent but they waste it on avatars. If Kameo was on the wii and published by nintendo it would be a huge franchise by now. I was expecting it to become MS' Zelda type game but they ditched it just like Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Too Human, and many other games. You dont build franchises like Mario, COD, Zelda, Halo, exc by giving up. With each sequel the ip becomes bigger and stronger. Nowadays MS would drop Halo after the 1st game saying it didnt sell enough and Halo 2 wouldve never come out and revolutionised console mp.
Rare hasn't provided MS the kind of returns that they were hoping for.
MS was hoping to use them to help build brand identity by creating/continuing successful franchises. They thought Rare could do for the Xbox what they did for the N64.
But it never really worked out. The old franchises--Perfect Dark, Banjo--haven't generated spectacular sales, and none of their attempts at new ones caught on either.
Since MS has found their marquee franchises elsewhere, they probably would be willing to sell Rare, for the right price.
Still, this is one of those "anonymous tipster" stories, so I wouldn't count on it.
I find it amusing when people have this idea that Nintendo are some small company with no buying clout, oblivious to the fact that Nintendo have sold the most consoles this gen, at a profit from day one. They are the biggest gaming company in the world.
Sony has a better chance of getting Crash back than Nintendo getting Rare. Now Nintendo getting just the Banjo franchise seems possible but also unlikely.
If it's Nintendo acquiring the rights to just Banjo Kazooie, then hell yes. I can only imagine the polish of the next BK game that comes out especially in Nintendo's hands. Please make it happen! And I hope to god the next one is platformer, with awesome Wii U controller integration.
Unless Microsoft wants to get rid of Rare and is giving a very sweet deal...
I don't see why they would do this... it was a decent franchise but... why do they need this IP?
The only reason I could see them wanting it back is to gloat over Microsoft if their sequel succeeded.
-But that does not sound like the Nintendo I know.
Besides with A New Console launching, the problems with their stocks, the 3rd Party courting, and the money that they are spending on developing games-
-I don't think that they would spend money on this-
-At least at this time.
Yeah, I don't expect this to be true, but the acquisition of Rare and they're franchises would be huge for Nintendo. Rare owns a lot of varied IPs that would complement a Nintendo console. From Banjo which feels right at home at Nintendo to Perfect Dark and Jet Force Gemini which is the kind of games Nintendo is always knocked for lacking.
Buying back Rare would also be a great service to their fans who fondly look back to their SNES/N64 days, and who would surely lap up any (good) sequel to those games.
Nintendo should start coming up with its own ideas instead of copying. 360 controller clone, Rare, what's next. And Nintendo said that smartglass copied the Wii U Pad and called it flattering. You're kidding right?
You know... at this point, does it even matter? Half the talent has already left Rare. Buying them back wouldn't even make a difference, I would not think.
But at least giving them Banjo-Kazooie would be the first best thing Rare's done in ages.
But it's probably not gonna happen since Microsoft's got its cock firmly tucked down Rare's throat so far that the slightest response from Rare would be a god damn gurgle...
They released Perfect Dark Zero, Perfect Dark HD, Banjo Kazooie HD, Banjo 2, Banjo Kazooie Nuts And Bolts, Kameo all this generation. Grabbed By The Ghoolies, Conker last generation.
They needed a solid studio to work on their new tech (Kinect) which was a huge investment, so Rare made 2 games and those games have gone on to sell close to 10 million copies.
Rare has been hiring for 2 next generation games, 1 of those games is a rumored Perfect Dark reboot.
Its not like Sony or Nintendo work with all of their IP's every generation.
Break the Locks
Break the Locks
@Nathan - This is true.

nintendo better buys rare again than.
dont let ms waste them
We know nintendo is king of platformers with mario galaxy. This would really help.
they had instant mascots, the likes they could never create on there own, i don't care how many shooters they want, every console needs its stable mario/zelda type games, even Sony is lacking them this gen, but Microsoft had them, the golden opportunity to take games like banjo and kameo and make them classics, support them and make them games that everyone will remember, but no...

The views of part of a group do not reflect the entire group. Rare also made Perfect Dark, by the way.
Step 2. Rebuild the team.
Step 3. Have them create a new Banjo-Kazooie game/Donkey Kong 64 sequel.
Step 4. ???
Step 5. PROFIT! OH MY GOD THE PROFIT!

(Jet Force Gemini)
Hypothetically speaking - if Microsoft does acquire Activision, I believe they won't have a problem parting ways with Rare.
Can you imagine; Retro Studious + Rare, together?
My wallet can't hold all these purchases...
Ya bro xD.
Jet Force Gemini is really under appreciated, and it deserves a sequel, or at least a remake.
I doubt it.
The real question is your second one; why would MS ever sell back Rare?
MS was hoping to use them to help build brand identity by creating/continuing successful franchises. They thought Rare could do for the Xbox what they did for the N64.

Anyway...
"Well Said" to you

And an "agree" (but only in the value of the IPs)
But at least giving them Banjo-Kazooie would be the first best thing Rare's done in ages.

This sounds like someones wishful thinking.
"Now you are a shadow of your former self making silly casual Kinect games that no one is buying"
I wouldn't call nearly 10 million in sales for Kinect Sports 1 & 2 as "no one buying".
Rare is supposedly working on two new next gen titles for the Xbox 720 and I highly doubt Microsoft would part with them or any of their IP's.
They needed a solid studio to work on their new tech (Kinect) which was a huge investment, so Rare made 2 games and those games have gone on to sell close to 10 million copies.
Rare has been hiring for 2 next generation games, 1 of those games is a rumored Perfect Dark reboot.
