Does Sex Sell Video Games?

Something that is well known in the world of entertainment is that sex seems to sell. This can be anything from the act itself to something small; for example, a woman wearing a low-cut shirt, revealing cleavage. Sex and sex-appeal is widely used by countless industries and it seems that video games have decided to dwell into the “Sexual Realm”, if you will. So this causes me to ask the question; is sex-appeal really needed in a game, in order to make sure that it sells?

Its what got GoDaddy popular even though now they said they will refrain from those kinds of ads that lure people in.

I'm pretty it does the same for videogames.

As the whiff of food attracts starving men, the illusion of sex attracts sex-starved boys.

The "satisfied" would not even look towards the direction of such deceptions.

TheoreticalParticle2103d ago

If we extend your analogy, you're attempting to say that smelling food wouldn't make a satisfied person hungry, and that's patently false. There's a reason gluttony exists.

If he's satisfied with food, he wouldn't be hungry.

If he's satisfied with sex, he wouldn't be horny enough to BUY a GAME to PLEASE his SEXUAL DESIRES.

@ TheoreticalParticle

"If we extend your analogy, you're attempting to say that smelling food wouldn't make a satisfied person hungry, and that's patently false. There's a reason gluttony exists."

Then that person isn't satisfied, by definition; you just undermined your extension.

It's a timeless fact and i doubt we'll see any change across the board in the near future.

Only people that purchase games due to its sex appeal are the ones who are deprived of any physical contact with females

All that beefcake certainly helps Gears of War move units.

Oh c'mon. Marcus Fenix is such a stud muffin. ;)

This game sold less than a 150k copies. That is a huge failure for a AAA styled developer.

AO1JMM2103d ago

That is the problem, that game is far from a AAA game.

TheoreticalParticle2103d ago

And you know the sales for this game, how?

Fern3172103d ago

"While Suda 51′s Lollipop Chainsaw didn’t chart, it did sell a very respectable 107k copies. This is almost 5 times the sales of Suda’s last game, Shadows of The Damned. So Lollipop Chainsaw is kind of a success story in its own."

This game in no way was made to be taken serious and I am a firm believer that this was just for fun. Like that quote states; if you think about it, this game was a success for the company AND further proves that yes, sex helps with sells.

TheoreticalParticle2103d ago

Fern: Works for me. Just as long as they're not made up numbers. Suda's games don't generally sell well, and they're not my cup of tea most of the time, but just wanted to know where the numbers were coming from.

Not really, to me anyway. There are much more easily accessible, explicit fixes for that kid of thing.

RXL2103d ago

no..it doesn't...

some of the best selling video games aren't sexual in ANY way what so ever...

so of the lower selling ones try to use it as a selling point but don't make much a difference in sales..

jc485732103d ago (Edited 2103d ago )

I'd be lying if I said Uncharted wasn't really sexy.

It's a form of attraction if they do it right.

Heartnet2103d ago

Its not saying that games have to be sexual to be succesful..

its saying If a game has sexy characters or revolves around sex would it sell more than if it was the same game but with it not in it..

RXL2103d ago

which is why i said the lower selling ones that HAVE sex as a selling point don't make much more because of it..they still sell low..

i just don't think it makes a difference..in my opinion..

but hey..im just a regular consumer..
