Top Five Game Characters That Need To Retire

Gamesta writes: Let’s face it! When a video game series sells enough copies of a game, the developer realizes that they might have a real success story on their collective hands. Sometimes a few gems come out with one great main character, stars in a few games, rounds out his or her epic tale and then he or she is put to bed and only lives on in our hearts and dreams as a memorable time that we will treasure forever. Sometimes though, a game company will realize that as long as they keep kicking out games, raving children of the world will whine and complain until their parents cave and spend their hard-earned money to quiet the shrill cry of their little ones. Then (and no one is more guilty of this video game sin than Nintendo) these beloved characters of our past are re-released about four hundred times to squeeze every last cent out of them. So, for the uninitiated, I have compiled a list of five of the characters that need to retire and play Canasta until they die.

Let’s kic... (Metroid, PC, PS3, Resident Evil, The Legend of Zelda, Tomb Raider, Wii, Xbox 360)

OUR past? Why can't it be the past of the people of this generation as well? Any game that can last over two decades does not need to retire because the demand is high enough generation after generation. Same reason Final Fantasy is still around. Yes it is all about money, but people are still happy to get the games regardless. It would be a crime against gaming to take away characters that have lasted from the 80's until the HD cinematic era with no voices, a timeless formula, and starting off the new generation of gamers and still satisfy the old fans.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Not only have the characters stood the test of time, but the older games as well. I just played the original Zelda for the first time and it was fantastic. I had more fun exploring in it than I have in most current gen games. To retire Mario or Link, the forefathers of console gaming, would be a terrible, terrible mistake.

The Nintendo characters are fine because they find ways to re invent the game play, look at how they evolved them into 3D.

New characters come with new IPs which rarely happen towards the end of a console generations...

It's gnerally simple, if you don't want to see a character anymore don't buy teir games. The publichsers will get the message...

Don't usually like Nintendo, my very last one was the 64 because it had the best designed and most cohesive control pad ever.

You just can't kill off Mario, it's like deleting Mickey Mouse from Disney.

Another generic list of popular characters with sequels. What's next? The "S" and "Z" pieces from tetris? Personally, I hate'em.

"Now, it is one thing to take the “if it’s not broke” approach, and it is quite another thing to copy and paste the game ad nauseum." It seems as though the author has only watched videos of these games. They have changed with each title, not just "added new graphics".
