Rumor: Final Fantasy XV Four Years In Development, Will Release On Current Gen Platforms

You may recall a GamesMaster UK rumor we passed along last Decmeber concerning Final Fantasy XV being announced at E3 of this year.

Well, E3 2012 has come and gone with no unveiling from Square Enix, however, the UK publication stands by its source and shares more speculation on the rpg that Square Enix President Yoichi Wada reportedly wants to ”surpasses The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” and Final Fantasy VII.

Yochi wada, why the **** do you want to compete with Skyrim? It's nothing like Final Fantasy and no one wants FF to be like it. ****/

FF went **** when they start trying to change it

sinncross2008d ago

I am not a big fan of FF12, but if anyone can bring FF to its former glory its Hiroyuki Ito. He makes the most consistently good titles in the series I feel.

So I have faith in this title, if true. But I remain cautious after FF13 and FFV13 being completely absent from Square's schedule.

Reibooi2008d ago

I loved XII so I would love for this to be true but I kinda doubt it is. I mean anyway you look at it this gen is starting to wind down and VsXIII has yet to release and I doubt SE would release two high profile games like this so close to each other.(for fear of cannibalizing sales).

The only way I would believe it is if Versus is going next gen which we don't know about.

Either way I would love to see another FF that has the feel and look of XII and more so if it takes place in Ivalice but a rumor is a rumor and until SE says something about it I'm gonna assume it doesn't exist.

PoSTedUP2008d ago

i love 12. but just please give my vita something, a demo, a gameplay video so i could pretend, anything. please.

blitz06232007d ago

That "surpass Skyrim" statement is being taken out of context and wrongly put in the summary. Obviously, you didn't read the whole article.

This is the actual statement:
"Yoichi Wada (president of Square Enix) wants the game to have a world scale and volume of content that surpasses The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. He also wants the game to surpass FFVII in worldwide sales and critical reception"

Wada wants to surpass Skyrim in terms of content. He does not exactly want FFXV to be like Skyrim.

ShinMaster2007d ago

So I have faith.... as long as Wada doesn't meddle in the creative process.

guitarded772007d ago

FF XII was one of my favorite FF games, so I hope the rumor is true. With FF XV, GTA V, God of War Ascension, Battlefield 4, Halo 4, Bioshock Infinite and other big titles, this gen could go out on a really, really high note.

LiViNgLeGaCY2007d ago

Wow, glad to see I'm not the only one who loved XII. Thought I was alone there for a while. xD

MRMagoo1232007d ago

Yeh i can imagine there are 4 ppl who think 12 was good , i cant imagine anyone would think of it as a favourite tho what about 7 8 9 or even 10 they are all better than 12 imo but i did enjoy 12 i just didnt like the combat system much

"The game design and battle system will be a major evolution of FFXII."

Why dont they just make FF turnbased again where you can control all characters?

AND WHY THE **** would you want to make FF like Skyrim !! STOP westernising...this guy makes me want to go kill a puppy...i need to **** calm down

LAWSON722008d ago

Because square is retarded

Kratoscar20082007d ago

Wada is not worth the puppy life.

wnek92007d ago

the ff12 battle system wasn't that bad and you can control all the characters by switching. it was the best evolution of a active battle system they have used since active turn based battle. and the gambit system for managing certain events like heal at 20% less health was very well implemented as well. so if they can majorly improve on that it would be a very well implemented battle system. especially compared to what they did with 13's battle system....

specialguest2007d ago (Edited 2007d ago )

If you actually read the article carefully, it says:

• Yoichi Wada (president of Square Enix) wants the game to have a world scale and volume of content that surpasses The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

KEYWORDS: Scale and volume of CONTENTS

That's freaking nice if they can achieve that.

Heavenly King2007d ago

Because maybe, for most it is boring as hell. In FFXII you could use every character.

Summons752008d ago

FF always changes from game to game. Even 13 was similar with all the changes. It was still an ATB battles system like 3-9 just really faster paced, and the Leveling system was a better version of the sphere grid from FF10....the next game always changes just borrows and improves on previous things.

Although I do not like the idea of the battle system being like 12 seeing as it's the worst, this is just a rumor and highly doubtful.

BitbyDeath2008d ago

'Improves' is too strong of a word.

Dark_king2008d ago

Sorry FF13 had the worst battle system of any rpg I have ever played. Was just bad real bad.

the leveling system was crap to FF10 at least gave you a bit of choice they took that away in 13.

Biggest2007d ago

Then you haven't played many RPGs. Go check out The Last Remnant's battle system. FFXIII did not have a bad battle system. I know the internet requires the use of outrageous hyperbole, but it isn't applicable here. Also, you have the same choice in the FFXIII leveling system as you did in FFX. I'm not sure why your hate for the game makes you forget the way a game you enjoyed actually worked.

Dark_king2007d ago

@Biggest

You think what you want the battle system in FF13 was crap, crap that went backwards we should of had more control over are party not less.

As far as the having choice like ff10 no you did not not even close. One is a line that goes in one direction no matter what there are a few things that branch off but it is basically a line.FF10 was not near that simple. There really is no argument about that, trying to makes it look as though you never played FF10 are don't remember it.
http://images.wikia.com/fin...

MRMagoo1232007d ago

Yes i agree with amber , it seems you didnt even play ff10 biggest because you have no clue if you think that, i also agree ff13 was just an abortion of a game and thats it

Yea FF i use to love when i was young.

TiberusX872007d ago (Edited 2007d ago )

Square has managed two different development teams for Final Fantasy a long time. It is why each entry has always been quite different, and if there is any man who can bring things back it's Hiroyuki Ito, as he has not ever been directly involved with XIII or vsXIII. We have a direct evolution of IX & XII and that is a great thing.

Just like EA (also controversial), Square has a lot of different teams and this team will bring us FF untainted by the evolutions of XIII. I can't say i'm a fan of Wada, but when he refers to surpassing Skyrim he is clearly talking about the depth and size of the world, not the style of game. XII was quite a large world full of life and this is not unexpected at all.

BinaryMind2007d ago

I wouldn't give Ito too much credit for XII. He merely took over after Yasumi Matsuno left and had already created most of the game. And you can tell by the end of the game the developers had trouble delivering the story properly.

dark-hollow2007d ago (Edited 2007d ago )

it would funny and sad at the same time if FFXV released before FF Versus XIII...

Irishguy952007d ago

It was funny and sad that FF14 was released befor Versus. 15 would just be a ****ing Deskface

justpassinggas2007d ago

The source is very fraudulent. It claimed that FF XV will be revealed at E3 2012 at a special Square Enix event last December.

LightofDarkness2007d ago

No, the source claimed it would be revealed as part of the 25th Anniversary. Gamesmaster suggested E3 2012. We can still get an announcement at TGS.

smashman982007d ago

technically as long as it makes the announcement by the square enix event this december that source would be correct

pompombrum2007d ago (Edited 2007d ago )

This!! Seriously, I always knew it was time for Wada to step down but this is beyond insulting.. how in god's name can you reference Skyrim to a new FF game? That SHOULD be like the battlefield developers referencing GT or Forza.

If I see more mentions of Skyrim in the future to FF15, I'm seriously boycotting Square and going to hate on them to new levels.

smashman982007d ago

The article said yochi wants to blow the size and scale of skyrim out the water basically He wants this game to be the best rpg ever

Im down with that

DA_SHREDDER2007d ago (Edited 2007d ago )

I always wanted a Dragon Warrior and a real old school Final Fantasy Online

geddesmond2007d ago

What you mean an open world final fantasy game with as much content as Skyrim and a revamped battle system would be awesome and very long over due.

Just picture a game with FF characters running around skyrims open world map fighting enemies found in a FF game with all the magic and combat animations during battle that has so many quests, towns, dungeons and weapons and a very complex leveling system that all FF games has, along with summons or Aeons that you can acquire and secret areas you have to find yourself and a good story that comes with most FF games. Picture that and then tell me you don't want a game like that.

Anyway when they said the game was in development for 4 years and then said that Wada wants the game to be open like Skyrim well then lost me. Its just a rumour, how then spend 4 years making a game to be like a game that only released last year??

Outside_ofthe_Box2008d ago

I'm not going to get my hopes up. I just hope that this is a good game.

***"The game design and battle system will be a major evolution of FFXII."***

This is what FF13 should have had instead of that horrible battle system in my opinion.

LightofDarkness2007d ago

XII had an excellent battle system, it was criticized largely by the "purist" crowd for not being turn-based, because apparently staying exactly the same is the only way the series can move forward :/

Plus, it's got Ito at the helm, and he directed 3 of my favourites. VI, IX and XII easily had the best gameplay of just about any FF games in the series, and were also notable shifts in direction each time (VI just shifted everything into high gear, IX reconnected with the series' roots and XII brought a much need battle system evolution).

poolsharky272007d ago (Edited 2007d ago )

It was criticized because if you set the gambits up properly you never even needed to play the game. Just watch everyone auto-play.

Don't give me the "you didn't need to play that way" spiel, it was the most efficient way of playing, and any gamer who is a min-maxer(most RPG players) aims for efficiency. The second most efficient way was spamming boring Quickenings endlessly to 1-shot bosses. The game-play is the -main- reason I do not like 12. I like the world, the side-quests, the story is mediocre, but the game-play simply ruined it for me and not because it wasn't turn-based.

Also, your 3 favorites are my 3 least favorites, but that is more personal preference, to each their own.

Outside_ofthe_Box2007d ago (Edited 2007d ago )

Exactly! I never understood the hate for 12's battle system. Yeah, it isn't turn based, but I personally feel that turn based battle system is dated.

12 battle system was a STEP in the right direction. Like you said 12 brought a much NEEDED change in the battle system for Final Fantasy. 13 took it 3 steps back in my opinion for the simple fact that the battles didn't happen in real time. If you are going to have separate a battle screen you may as well make it the traditional turn based system.

12's battle system was by no means perfect, but I think it had a good foundation that should have been improved upon. I've been saying that for the longest.

Ideally I would like to have a battle system that happens real time yet is turned based. That can please both those that want a turn based system and those that want something more dynamic for Final Fantasy.

poolsharky272007d ago (Edited 2007d ago )

@Outside_the_box

I agree with your sentiments, it was a step in the right direction, but it was extremely boring to me.

It wasnt the real-time fighting, or the non-turn-based fighting that was the problem. It was the slow-mo/boring animations, plus gambits making the player unnecessary. Battles weren't exciting.

Btw, I didnt disagree with either of you.

forevercloud30002007d ago

@poolsharky
anyone who says the game can be beaten on autopilot just proves they never got very far in the game. after the 25% mark the game starts to get very demanding. It becomes impossible to equip all the gambits you will need to survive and one of the biggest obstacles is that CPU control has lag. Quite often you will need a Cure spell YESTERDAY and will need to switch on the fly to make it happen.

In all honesty, XII has one of the strongest battle systems in the series. FFX is tied with it in my opinion. What I didn't like was the license system and the poor man's sphere grid that it was. Also was very disappointed with summons especially after how perfect they were in X, they needed to be able to level up to still be relevant by end game(I think Int ver. fixed this but never localized). Traveling wasn't all that great either as it felt even more mechanical than fun as it was in pre-FFX days.

Still, the battle system ROCKED!!! FFXII was one of the few FF games where magic was so necessary(went through most of FFVII-IX never using spells).

poolsharky272007d ago (Edited 2007d ago )

@forevercloud3000

Actually you can, that's exactly how I played. I spent hours upon hours setting up gambits to perfect them.

The only time you cant(or not well) is at the beginning, when you still havent unlocked good gambits and enough gambit slots.

Theres a ton of videos on youtube of gambit-only play-throughs.

I agree with everything else you said.

edit2: I thought it was humorous that you said magic was so necessary, when I pretty much didn't use any magic at all besides healing.

edit: This is on the US version, not international.. I've never played the INT version, I dont know if it's any different. You can literally beat the US version by just berserk'ing a melee for every battle(main story).

poolsharky272007d ago

Heh, it seems fans have so many different varying opinions. Therein lies SE's problem, they can't please everybody.

LightofDarkness2007d ago (Edited 2007d ago )

@forevercloud:

Those are my sentiments exactly. I felt like X was the pinnacle of the turn-based battle system; wrought from its table-top/8-bit origins and re-engineered with more modern sensibilities. It was the greatest part of FFX for me (because I essentially hated the rest of it :p), and pretty much the greatest turn-based style FF battle system there could ever be. And that's why it needed to change.

XII's system isn't perfect, but it was a bold step in the right direction. You've outlined pretty much all of the problems I had with it. And while yes, you could probably "play" the game blind with the gambit system, that's certainly not the experience most people had with it, nor was it the intended one. More to that, people were hating FFXII for its battle system before it was even released (much more on release), long before they could've noted the flaws mentioned by poolsharky. People wanted to hate XII.

And while I enjoyed XII, it was in fact marred by fan and corporate expectations. Replacing intended lead Basch with Vaan during the final phase of development absolutely ruined the story, and this was clearly because the management felt that the fans wanted an androgynous teenage boy as the lead. But we're not talking about story here, so I digress. XIII as well was an attempt to pander to fans' love of X and Advent Children at the time, so you have corridors and flashy combat that essentially plays itself, along with a boring, overly metaphysical story about emo-kids. And the main villain is Transformer-Pope :/

Anyway, all I can say is that this info has me intrigued. As long as they give Ito the freedom to direct the ship his way, this game could be absolutely stellar. Ito clearly places an importance on exploration and artistic detail along with exciting battle mechanics, so as long as we keep an open mind, we may be pleasantly surprised.

poolsharky272007d ago (Edited 2007d ago )

I play games before I judge them. (As everyone should!)
What I listed was why I disliked the game/battle system(hate is too strong a word)

While yes people were disliking it before the game was released, what I stated certainly didn't help it's cause.

I cant be the only one who tried to min/max gambits for efficiency, having a gambit ready for every possible scenario. Along with switching them around to personalize for each boss-fight. It was a tedious to setup(not enjoyable) just to watch the game play itself(also, not enjoyable).

Which made it extremely not fun for people who played that way. Which is why I don't like it, the 'best'(subjective) way to play it isn't fun.

Also didnt help that summons were so useless, summons are generally my favorite part of FF-games and I only used Belias(Ifrit rip off, which reminds me, where's the legit summons?!) once after first getting it.

Qrphe2008d ago

It was to be expected, they weren't going to announce that the game was in development a long time before it was released: they would have been stupid to make the same mistake that they did with FFvsXIII.

As far as XV being as open as Skyrim, I honestly do not mind. They try different things with every numbered FF title and I'm sure it won't feel like Skyrim anyway.

darthkai2008d ago

Where the fuck is Final Fantasy Versus 13 ?!?

MaideninBlack2008d ago (Edited 2008d ago )

That's the million gil question. I wish GM UK would ask their "source" about Versus instead.

TacoTaru2007d ago

It's something everyone thinks they want without actually know what it is.

Dark112008d ago (Edited 2008d ago )

”surpasses The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim”
but FFvXIII can do that .. beside they are both action RPG's!

anyway if this rumor is true .. i hope Final Fantasy XV be an action RPG and not turn based.

TiberusX872007d ago

They are all from different development teams. The development of XV and vsXIII are completely separate and have nothing to do each other. Numora taking his sweet ass time trying to achieve perfection with vsXIII is not Ito's problem, and if his game (XV) comes out first that's not his fault.

Everyone forgets this and assumed Square was going downhill with XIII forgetting there are different teams behind each of the core titles too. vsXIII being completely separate again with the majority Kingdom Hearts team developing.

XII was a more open world FF with a lot of life, I think that Ito could achieve a big open world like Skyrim and see where Wada is coming from. If you read the article, the battle system will be an evolution from XII.
