Have you ever formed a significant relationship with a game character? Have you ever loved one, even? It's a question that would seem completely absurd to anybody distanced from videogames. But, as games increasingly attempt to prove their creative worth by investing more heavily in narrative and atmosphere, alongside their technical accomplishments, characterisation is an area that's very much worth looking at - largely as it's arguably the most difficult aspect of creating a memorable interactive storytelling experience. Let's face it, games can have the most epic science-fiction plot ever conceived but without compelling characters to drive it along, it's tough to become emotionally involved.
