In contrast to the first game, which chronicled the Allied war effort on the Western front of World War II, Company of Heroes 2 takes the action out East, to Russia and their defensive against Nazi Germany. This changes more than merely the setting, which is itself a snowier, sparser landscape than in the past (it also deforms in real time with the use of powerful explosives, such as mortar rounds), affecting the technology available to the player (the Russians, though superior in numbers, were using outdated and outmoded equipment against the technologically cutting-edge German forces) and even the manner in which one is allowed to play.
