Once upon a time, the Tony Hawk name was synonymous with quality games. The Pro Skater franchise was respected, being the first extreme sports title to cross over from the niche that such games had previously inherited and into the mainstream. Through multiple sequels the brand was initially refined, but eventually diluted, until all that was left was a pale reminder of former glories. Increasingly, the franchise relied on gimmicks and expensive peripherals, as it edged further away from what made it all so great in the first place. Instead of laying the series to rest, however, Activision has decided to try to rekindle the spirit with a downloadable release that encapsulates the high points of the first two games, slaps on a new lick of HD paint, and charges you a reasonably small entry price. How successful has the experiment been?
