What makes this game enjoyable or a good series?

Is it the story or gameplay?

Summons751473d ago

both. The story is amazing and the gameplay is addictive

Yakuza is basically a JRPG. The combat is like an old-school beat-em-up like Ninja Turtles IV on the Snes but the encounters are random (just like in a JRPG), you level up and all that stuff to gain new abilities and you can grind too (just like in a JRPG). The story is a convoluted mess like Metal Gear but with the yakuza. This is the core of the series but beside this you do other stuff like side-quests and mini-games.

Mini-games and side-quest are basically the same on every game though and that's why the games always receives bad scores. The town is the same too so reviewers say that the games are archaic, lack evolution and blah blah blah. Yakuza 5 is the one that is supposed to bring huge changes to the series but still, all the other games are worth playing for their stories alone.

As a total package, it's different from everything else on the market. Even though the open world genre is cluttered, Yakuza feels fresh in spite of itself.

Literally.

As individual parts it can have some things working against it per some people's tastes. Dated graphics at times, controls can be a bit clunky, subtitles required due to no english VO, lots of backtracking through the same city over multiple games. But as a WHOLE, when all the parts come together after a 50 hour playthrough, I've found Yakuza3/4 more memorable and entertaining than almost every other open world game I've played this gen', from GTA to SaintsRow, Just Cause to Prototype.

So yeah. If this Yakuza1/2 HD set comes to NorthAmerica, I'll be buying it day one. Never played the first two, only seen them via the cutscene story recaps in Yakuza3/4. The charachters are better developed than most games, bar none.

Yakuza 3 is cheap, just buy it. I got the game because I was board one weekend, I never planned on getting it I still don't know why I did but it is one of the very best games I've ever played and I can't recommend it more.

Sweet jumping jelly bean!

With this and Yakuza 5 on its way makes me a very, very happy man. I've been wanting to get my hands on this ever since I saw the recaps in Yakuza 3's cemetery.

Yakuza 3&4 are spectacular games, if you have a PS3 give it a shot these games have something for everyone in them.

You're in for a treat then because Yakuza 2 is easily my favorite game in the series. Yakuza 1 is no slouch either. With better graphics and fast loading times in the HD release, it should be a great experience for those who haven't played the first two games. Fingers crossed on a US release!
