IncGamers: It looks as though we’ve got a possible case of plagiarism on our hands here! Naughty Dog, have you copied the classic Atari St and Amiga game Bermuda Project’s box art for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception?
Sure, it was such a cool game and Naughty Dog got so inspired by that super awesome box art that they decided you copy it. No, seriously, probably just a coincidence.
did you even read the article?
@iamironman This article is gonna get some heat with headline lol. How dare you imply this! seriously though that is kinda weird. I bet there are loads of games similar to each other you should try and find some and make an article out of it, could be funny =)
Oh yeah. This is certainly not the first time an article with this idea has been published. I can remember clearly back in the days when I was subscribed to 4 different gaming magz, either PSM, OPM, EGM or GameInformer had a pretty long piece about game covers that looked the same. They went all the way back to the Atari/Coleco?Intelliv. days, right up to whenever current was in that issue, sometime last gen. The difference is, that article had somewhere around 30 or more examples of similar game covers. So basically, to the author, thumbs up for a modern example but thumbs down for writing a worthwhile article could have been a nice article if you actually put some effort in to find more modern examples of similar covers, because it actually happens quite alot. The lesson of simlar covers is: With game covers you have one single image to get the point of the game across, make it look interesting, and sell it to "window shoppers". Since there's only one single image to do all those things, and there's been probably a million video games ever made..........covers over the years will end up looking similar. The same holds true for movie posters.
Yes I did after I wrote the comment
I'm not sure why, but right as I saw that cover art I thought of Halo 3's first trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watc...
That article was literally four sentences in length.
There's only so much variation you can have with one cover image to represent a game. Stuff like this is bound to happen: http://videogames.memebase.... There are a ton of video game box arts that have a similar theme, pose, etc. In the case of Uncharted 3, the box art comes right from an actual scene in the game. On another note, who gives a s*** lol
it was posted on Monday too. slow news day? so soon? damn
"Did Uncharted 3 copy its box art from a 1987 Atari ST game?" No. And no; I didn't read the article. They look nothing alike; they have similar elements, but no more than this http://gamersdigart.files.w... and this. http://images.vg247.com/cur...
I love the Uncharted 3 box art, I always thought it was really cool. Just saying
The purpose of a boxart is to convey to a customer what to expect in the game 1) You play a guy named Nathan Drake:check 2) You crash a plane: check 3) You end up in the desert 4) Nate is wearing a white shirt, not blue and blue jeans, not tanned pants Its not plagiarism By this logic, activision should sue capcom since the re6 box art looks like Mw3 cept for a zombie, and giraffe fellatio... but even activision isn't that stupid nor greedy And people who made games with guns should sue every modern game with the lone soldier/person holding a gun, ex: BF3, ME3, DS3, etc Also in the article... he admits it more likely a coincidence, thus made the title only for hits... this is why gaming journalism is a joke
You are young and thus werent around during the nineties, the purpose of boxart is to sell the game. look at the Bermuda Project boxart, and then google ingame screenshots.
@andibandit I was born in the 90's I think you mean the 80's when the Atari came out... I never had an Atari, but I guess your right about them trying to sell the game back then... Today though boxart just looks cool, and gives you an idea of what the game will have, or a moment in the game Still it's a stupid headline, designed to fish for hits
Most likely a coincidence cause it's not like it's the exact same.
Before we go there, Activision should be suing EA for its Medal of Honor and Battlefield 3 covers.
BF3 and MoH covers look nothing like MW box art. Battlefield always has practically the same cover with the same modeled soldier.
"copy" is the wrong word. thats implying that its identical. if they did use this cover as inspiration, which..i have no idea if they did, it'd be said that they used it as just that. "inspiration" it has a guy with a crashed plane in the desert, not really the most original thing in the world.
Copy is such a harsh word. How about we use inspire.
Probably both just drew inspiration from Flight of the Phoenix. People think they come up with something original, but the sub-conscious mind is very powerful. This is an amazing example of how it works: http://www.youtube.com/watc... (watch till the end)
Erm no but he does have a point about how cover art is getting worse.
He doesn't say that. He says that cover art hasn't changed much. Can't tell if stupid or just trolling...
Just to make myself clear, Uncharted 3 is one of the best games available right now with Naughty Dog being the best developers working in the industry so not trolling... guess that must make me stupid then lol.
I thought you meant cover art in general is getting worse. For the most part cover art now looks miles better than 20 or even 10 years ago. I only said trolling because you were "agreeing" with something he didn't say.
I don't believe at all it's worse ... it's just imo the default setting of some people to proclaim everything was better , as per blind nostalgia . The past is full of awful cover like Megaman NES (remember the thing that lead to the joke SFXT character ?) , Suikoden US YS III http://media.giantbomb.com/... , http://www.mobygames.com/im... , Donkey Kong http://scottthong.files.wor... , Strider http://kidfenris.com/stride... , Super Street fighter 2 Trubo http://bunnypookah.free.fr/... etc etc ... Now we mostly have complaints about one zone getting a cooler one , or about how ugly Platinum , best collection/seller covers are .
That one stretch because there are three entries in the series so why wait until the third game to copy a box art of another game?makes no sense.
That's your big explaination? So it's impossible to copy box art because it's the 3rd game of the series??
Did he say it was impossible? He's just saying why wait until the 3rd entry to copy something? You haven't copied box arts before so why start now? Personally I think it's just a coincidence, but we know you Sony haters will take anything you can get. ;)
It's that time of the month again for you eh? I mean really, if your hating on Sony/Naughty Dog over a boxart then please do the world a big favor and jump off the worlds highest building! Who cares if they copied, didn't copy, or were inspired by another video game boxart, it's just a boxart!
@Dcortz2027 Seriously if you are saying to someone to jump over a building because he / she attack your precious captalism compagny you should jump over a building. Just a boxart and advicing someone to jump over a building contradiction no ?
They're similar, but seriously? Not worth an article. Maybe you should do the "top 5/10 box art plagiarisms" or something.
Its just a coincedense, if its a similiar genre at least once every 25 years something is bound to look a like
did the author just spend too much time looking at old videogame box art, and make a ridiculously coincidental comparison with a current gen videogame's box art? get off of the internet, please.
The title of the artical is just for hits. when you read the artical the author admits that he doesn't think that ND actually copied it. So why the sensational headline? could have just read something like look at the similarities of these box art covers. Just my opinion.
If you worked on a website, you'd probably understand why bloggers (almost spelled boogers lol) / journalists do that. Sometimes it does get out of hand though, I'll admit, but you have to reel in the reader somehow and for stuff like this, a good title is they key.
Yup. Ever wonder why the headline reads "Tiger is in the hunt!", but Tiger is 8 strokes off the lead? Gotta get the readers to click. Headlines make the difference.
still even if the minority , it works in reverse and put off folks like me . And it's a good indicator of the integrity (or complete lack of ) of the writer . It being the default attitude of beyond 90% of them , change nothing . Mediocrity is usually outnumbering by far anyway .
I agree, many sites just do the copy paste method of press releases etc, and some things are literally just written to get traffic. Even so though, the people who complain about "giving hits" to sites have an invalid argument. Ad revenue is so small it's ridiculous. A lot of the times though, the work that you actually do put a lot of time into barley receives any traffic, so that's why sites do this sometimes. Basically to just get the name out there.
Racing games normally feature a car on a track... like grid or forza... do they copy each other? And how about your standard hero in foreground, allies just behind him with guns and a warzone in the background box art? It is such a standard box art for today... Do they copy each other?
It's not as bad as film posters yet. We're getting there though.
Gametime on a completely unrelated note seeing your avatar brought me back to the cave under Figaro...thank you :)
Wow, talk about reaching! Pathetic headline.
Did anybody actually read the article? Because he specifically says that he knows its just a coincidence, but it just goes to show how little box art has changed. It seems everyone in the comments believes the author thinks ND just straight ripped off this Atari game.
That doesn't stop the article's title from being an obvious hit-grabbing attempt.
"Did anybody actually read the article?" Why the surprise about people not wanting to go beyond the title ? It's thanks to things like that some wouldnt bother reading it
what a waste of internet space!
Also people looked at this and approved the article!?! It makes you wonder what they would turn away, I guess they draw the line if anything comes through written in crayon.
and both show off in game graphics!
why even care about cover art its just a box. what matters is the game.
Most pointless article ever
But you still bothered to comment, just like the rest of us.....
I'm not going to bother to comment on this.... wait....dammit.
The Rest Of Us... Wait a minute... Copycat! I can see a clear connection to Naughty Dog's newest upcoming game.
@GynGa That made me laugh! Now the conspiracy begins :3 +Bubs!
now that i think of it.....did star wars 1313 e3 footage plagiarize the uncharted 3 scene with the plane going down....with the cover based shootout that happened just before it???? well, they did plagiarize everything else about uncharted :P
It is probably just a coincidence.
It's Naughty Dog has, not Naughty Dog have.
When referring to a company, it's all about the context. If you refer to Uncharted as "they", then Uncharted is no longer a singular entity and "have" is correct. If you refer Uncharted as "it", then you use "has".
I meant Naughty dog not Uncharted.
I actually enjoy reading crap like this, haha...
It looks nothing like it...seriously!
It's obviously a coincidence. The part they really advertised a lot was the plane crash. So there's a downed plane behind him. Big whoop. It's almost like when 2 comedians think of a similar joke. They both thought of it themselves, but it's impossible to hear every single joke from every comedian. So what if 2 guys had the same idea.
Uncharted what a great series
i don't think they did
Game covers are a lot like headlines. Think about it.
Wow! Naughty Dog created a time machine? Best developers EVER!
*reads article* No.
I definatley wish our box art here in the US would get better. 1 game I can definatley say has better box art over seas is Lollipop Chainsaw!
How can it be a copy if theirs somethings missing? One has trees and the other doesn't and theirs more things. So I don't think you can really call it a copy.
oh wow the similarities are overwhelming! Mind=blown /s
Seriously?!.. copied?, similarities?, took inspiration?, honestly now I'm sure Bermuda Project never even crossed anyone's mind at NaughtyDog's cover art department.
