SCEA Representative Responds To Rumored Best Buy Discontinuing 80GB PS3 Model

Shacknews reports an SCEA representative did not comment on the subject of Best Buy's alleged discontinuation of the 80GB PS3, but indicated that a post addressing the matter will soon be on the official PlayStation blog.

If you don't know the rumor, Best Buy will apparently discontinue sales of the $499 80GB version of the PlayStation 3, according to an alleged internal store memo.

"The 80GB version of the PS3 is going closeout and won't be replaced at this time," the memo reads. "The 60GB version should already be gone from stores. Only the 40GB version of PS3 will be sold in Best Buy stores at this time."

The remaining 40GB model, currently priced at $399 lacks a handful of features available in the 80GB PlayStation 3, including a complete absence of PS2 backwards compatibility-which the memo itself notes.

that will be a good move

include Uncharted and Ratchet with it

pwnsause3773d ago

no, they are cutting the price, when things like this happen, its for a reason, and this is going to sell like hotcakes if the price drops.

I think there gonna remove the spiderman blu-ray pack in, and soon will add a bundled version with the Rumble controller, which should be coming to States/PAL regions in feb-april.

rofldings3773d ago

Maybe they're swapping out for rumble controllers + new game bundles (Motorstorm is getting old and needs retirement) and, of course, PRICE DROP!

Cyrus3653773d ago

I bet it'll be on the official PS3 Blog either tomorrow or monday regarding the matter.

I can see a few Xbots SHIVERING in their boots, eagerly HOPING that Sony doesn't have a MEGATON to drop.

I almost feel sorry for the Xbots...ALMOST,a haha HA!

I personally think that Sony should stop with the Spiderman Blu-ray bundle, and release either a Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction, Uncharted, or Warhawk bundle.

pwnsause3773d ago (Edited 3773d ago )

i agree, if you think about it, the format war is over BLu-ray has won, people already get it, now show it as a video game system and a secondary BLu-Ray Player.

TheHater3773d ago

Sony should either
A)Drop the price of the 80GB model by 50 dollars and don't bundle it with a game.

B)Keep the price at 500 dollars for the 80GB and just bundle it with either Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, Warhawk or Heavenly Sword.

C)Don't bundle the 40GB with Spiderman blu-ray movie, and just bundle it with either Resistance Fall of Man, Folklore, or Warhawk.

Cyrus3653773d ago

You gotta still remind them that there is a blu-ray player. You'll be surprised how many people think PS3 is just a video game box, and are totally surprised when they hear it can play Blu-ray movies.

Sony can scream at their top of their lungs that it plays blu-ray but it's no better way then to put content with it.

What they need to do is, have a sample disc that shows you what PS3 can do.

Like a disc, that shows it a video player, that it can upscale standard DVD's, that it can access the internet, that it can stream movies from your computer or other devices, that it has remote features, that it also can play games...

Sony should release a white 40gig PS3 for $299 and bundle it with either Uncharted or MGS4 when it comes out;)

Cyrus3653773d ago

Hell why 299, make it 250, and bundle it with GTA IV and MGS 4! :D Now that's a combo!

Iron Man 23773d ago

Damn if Sony released that bundle priced at $250,the PS3 WOULD demolish the Xbox 360 in monthly sales everywhere;)

Cyrus3653773d ago

I think if sony released that bundle anytime this year, they'll be going out of business lol. No way could they afford a hit on the console, plus 2 games! ;)

Sarick3773d ago

If this is the case you have to ask yourself. Has uncharted made a profit yet as a title. If the answer is no releasing it for next to nothing would hurt that game. Now if it's turned a profit then releasing it in the bundle won't cost them nearly the $60 retail.

one sku is the way to go. bc will be a thing of the past as new franchises put out there next gen games. only thing id really need bc for is socom but i have cod to fill the time. the people who seem to make the biggest fuss about it are the people who never use the feature anyways.
