People, despite some who largely want to see this generation drag on even longer, for some reason, are getting tired of the current consoles and their limitations at this point.

To put things into perspective, it seems that consoles are dropping in sales, while PC, year after year, is only gaining in popularity.

This is a good thing. PC will never really be limited in terms of performance, and if the install base continually gets larger, more developers will look to it as a main platform.

You wont see a huge drop in sells until the next round of consoles are announced like the Wii is seeing now. You will see a spike when new models comes out for the PS3 but depending on the price I don't think it will hold for long.

People want this gen to keep going because they see games like The Last of Us, Halo 4, and Beyond and see that there are still some great quality to be had in current systems, and they also dont want those prices on launch consoles.

I am glad PC gaming is picking up steam again its been awhile since sales have actually been great. I think this is mainly due to the prices of PC games over console. When you can pick up a new release PC games for 20 when it is still 60 on console its kind of retarded not to go that way. If you think about when next gen starts you can only guess how much games would cost. It could stay 60 or bump up to 70 we really have no way of telling right now.

You forgot Gears of War: Judgement! My most anticipated game coming out. XD

I think the drop in revenue and probably profits is indicative of two things:

a) dropping demand due to lack of new interesting software. A few games here and there is a far cry from what we used to get where things were new and shiny. What we get now is just quality games, but hardly innovative.

b) saturation of too many low priced games. Why pay top dollars for a recent game, when budget games are abound.

I think unit sales of consoles isn't likely to drop as price continues to drop, revenue and profit though already has.

"This is a good thing. PC will never really be limited in terms of performance, and if the install base continually gets larger, more developers will look to it as a main platform."

Not gonna happen because more profits are with the console versions which are more dedicated to games.

I disagree with you. PC gaming is great and all but PC developers are making games that once were only for PC available for consoles. The reason for this is because, the console market has exploded.

Consoles are dropping in sells because the new consoles are on the horizon. PC will always sell more because its not just used for gaming.

I actually think ps3/xbox360 are waiting on the launch of the Wii U. They want to gauge the success of the it to see if your assessment is correct. PC is still nowhere in the ballpark of consoles because the games are too easily pirated and cards tend to run alot higher than a game console. Also most of the games release on pc are multiplatforms that don't show an huge leap from consoles.

MysticStrummer1958d ago

To put things into perspective, better graphics don't mean better games, and PC gaming always gets more popular at the end of a console generation. PC won't be the main platform for many devs until PC gamers stop pirating so many games. Pirating happens on consoles also, but not nearly to the extent that it does on PCs.

avengers19781958d ago

Yea but games like Day Z that are quote wildly popular PC games has just reached 500,000 players. If an exclusive PS3, 360, or nintendo game sold 500,000 it would be a huge failure....and even though Battlefield 3 is better on PC then consoles more people play it on consoles.

PC gaming almost died... this is fact, now it's coming back in popularity and all of a sudden consoles are going to die... well both have been around since the late 70's early 80's and both will be around in 2020 and beyond... proved we survive whatever apocolypse is coming

Put think in perspective Sony outselling competition with PS 3 ww and proving that their long life console plan is a good one. You can start off fast than loose gas and not end s strong our you can start of slow and end keep selling well all the way through and end with a bang.

As for console sales being down you don't need to be a scientist to know why. These consoles have been around too long and people want new blood. In terms of wiiiiiiii sales that huge decline is due to saturation and also casual BS that people get tired of quickly and don't wish to buy. Sony and micro offer a gaming console that is more than that they can also be home entertainment centers especially ps3 so they have long legs

Mastarace1958d ago

sony still lost this gen.they were never in last place the other 2 gens. it was a runaway success within the 1st year or two.

Sony is billions of dollars in the red and their strategy this gen wasn't a good one. Hopefully they learned from this.

neutralgamer191958d ago

Yeah their gaming division is the cause of that and is not profitable (he chuckles out loud) Your trolling propaganda doesn't work on adults we know better about how Sonys gaming division is doing and what they've done. Please try again.

TheLyonKing1958d ago

2012 nearly 50% Market share I reckon by the end of 2012 Sony will achieve that.

CommonSenseGamer1958d ago

What was their market share last gen?
Also, they were forecasting 12 million Vitas sold in the first year....not looking good at all for reaching that target.

stuna11958d ago

Their forecast of 12 million wasn't for Vitas alone it was for psp too! Just thought you should know that.

Bathyj1958d ago

That was last gen. Every new gen is anyones to win.

I dont see why people think Sony HAS to dominate for their console to be considered a success by gamers just because it did in the past.

Bathyj1958d ago

Wow, the dropoff on Wii is quite staggering.
Looks like its just going to collapse over the line to the 100 Milliom mark though.
