The Fall of Survival Horror

TEP writes: Survival Horror is one of my favorite video game genres. The feeling of being alone and helpless while at the same time fighting for your life is something very few games have been able to capture. Recently however many developers have lost sight of that because they slowly began to realize it is a niche genre; it doesn’t sell millions of copies and it appeals to a specific audience because let’s face it, not everyone wants to be scared in a video game.

I love these types of games. They are the best and usually have an amazing story. I want more of them and its sad that not many are around :(

Ah, Resident Evil 2 and Silent Hill 2. I wish I could go back to the day I played those two games for the first time. Silent Hill 2 blew my mind on the story and atmosphere front. Never experience any game like that before. It was so unique, you truly felt alone in that game. Resident Evil 2 blew me away as well. The prerendered backgrounds, the fantastic music, the amazing atmosphere. The save rooms, puzzle solving, and of course THE ZOMBIES!!! What the heck happened this gen? Why does ever game have to be action packed nowadays? :.(

Crapcom is trying to appeal to a wider casual audience.

Look Mass Effect 3 for example. latest game have BRO characters in them with “Shoot That shit broGears Of War vibe” moments. Anyway, the only great horror and survival game was Amnesia.

WeskerChildReborned1478d ago

I hate how their are barely any survival horror games today, it's mostly FPS or TPS games.

VanillaBear1478d ago

Its worse when a developer says their game is still a survival horror but you can painfully see it isnt.......coughcough Capcom.

Same goes for Dead Space 3.....when another developer doesn't learn from the mistakes of a ruined once great survival horror franchise then the developers are just stupid.

Dont buy Re6 and Capcom might start to shit themselfs

Is a shame one of the most popular genres back in the PS1 and PS2 era has to die thanks to the mindless shooter fanbase that has risen in this Atrocious gen.

UnitSmiley1478d ago

I sincerely hope next gen breaks that mentality. Tbh I wish gaming was more of a niche hobby like it used to be, rather than a mainstream activity plagued by casuals.

Me too, I HAAATE it when a game is dumbed down for the casuals. But apparently just us core gamers along can't support the industry because of spiraling development costs. It's very sad.

ShaunCameron1476d ago (Edited 1476d ago )

Umm. (Console) gaming was never really niche. Besides, the casual audience that "core" gamers like to bash was the very same audience the gaming industry needed and won the support of to get back on its feet after the crash.

If anything, PC gaming was niche and and more or less still is.

BINGO! Console-manufacturers didn't invest millions upon millions of dollars into a console only a handful of people (namely gamers and technophiles) might care to buy. Ditto for developers making games.

@Kratoscar2008

Survival-horror was already on the way out well before this generation even started. The "mindless" shooter fanbase had nothing to do with that. Resident Evil 4 laid the foundation for current survival-horror games being really just glorified action/shooter games with survival-horror elements while revolutionizing the TPS genre.
