gamrReview: "The current generation of home consoles is coming to an end, but we need a new generation now, not in two years' time."
Completely agree about needing it to break down the creative wall. So sick of the endless sequels (especially 360 exclusives - Forza, Gears, Halo, and Fable every year) and lack of big new IP. Hopefully a new gen will kick-start things creatively.
Watch Dogs? The Last of Us? Heck the Wii has a number of original IPs for the Wii coming out (Last Story and Pandora's Tower). There are new IPs out there among the sequels; you just need to look for them.
Watch Dogs and the Last of Us are mentioned in the article. Part of the reason they stole the show at E3 was because they were new IPs. A new generation would likely give rise to many, many more new IPs (just as it did at the start of this gen).
Agreed, but we both know that the 360 is not the only guilty party. I also think that this more of a "fact of life", rather than a huge problem. The economy is bad, so don't expect too many risky endeavors by 3rd party devs. We see the same thing happening in the film industry. A fruitful product will get "milked" more than ever. Also, consumers know what they are getting when they purchase a sequel. I said that I would buy Xenoblade Chronicles day 1... but I didn't (mistake on my part). For a game like Zelda: Skyard Sword, however, I arrived at Gamestop 30 minutes before opening to get a copy.
I honestly think Microsoft is the only one that hasn't created new IP yet. It's not bad that they try to focus on Halo, Gears, and Forza, but they need to start making some more IPs.
It's a catch 22. Need new ips or new harpist but companies need cash or guaranteed revenue for next Gen. They will take a hit initially and with a shaky economy and increased competition, it is a big risk. They have to get it right and video games are only a part of what next Gen consoles will offer. I do not envy whoever is responsible for deciding what the final product will be. They have to b very powerful to exceed what PC's will be doing a few years from now but at a reasonable price. It has to be set up to do all the things that may come our way in the next 5 years. It has to set itself apart from it's competition in a time in which it could go in so many different directions. I always thought that upgradeable hardware would be a must, but it isn't looking that way. It would keep price lower but allow a serious gamer to invest money for maximum gameplay experience. It does need to be soon, but I want it done right.
The only reason i want a next gen console now is to be able to have awesome physics and just improved gameplay.
I can't imagine having a new generation now. Can you imagine disk locked content or online passes.......for launch titles!? This generation needs to sort itself out beforehand.....
