Michael Pachter made a prediction regarding the upcoming Microsoft-Console Xbox 720. In his opinion, Microsoft has a strategie to take over the world. It will cost less than 100 US-Dollars.
Nope. Every companies 3rd console is always the worst. NES- domination SNES- domination N64- dominated by PS1 PS1- domination PS2- domination PS3- dominated by Wii SEGA- dominated by NES SEGA Saturn- dominated by SNES SEGA Dreamcast- put out of business by PS2 Xbox- dominated by PS2 Xbox 360- dominated by Wii Xbox 720- ................. Xbox has been dominated twice. Sony and Nintendo have multiple championship rings and Sony and Nintendo both won their first two console wars while Xbox has. lost their first two console wars being dominated both times. The Xbox 720 will be MS's third attempt and they will have theor worst showing yet just like everyone else. With MS's main focus being on the casuals this will be their downfall. You can't count on casuals to buy new hardware for $400 and they ceetainly will not finance a console. Meanwhile the core gamers sees MS's obsession with casuals and they see how MS abandoned them so most of them will not fall for MS's trickery again. They won't be suckered on with Halo and Gears next time. That's all MS will give the core.
i wonder why you missed the SEGA Mega Drive.
The past is not a prediction for the future. There is a pattern, but it doesn't mean it has to follow. It really depends on what MS is showing compared to the competition. Also, there are some gaps in the history of Sega console releases such as Sega Mega Drive (aka Genesis in the US) so it doesn't exactly follow that pattern. It seems only to follow that pattern if a company is dominating. Sega really never dominated as far as I can remember. I have a feeling the Wii U will not win the next generation so the ball is left to MS and Sony, although I probably shouldn't judge it too soon. I don't think MS focus is on "casuals", but rather widening the market. They have traditionally been a platform enabler, and I don't think that will stop. Personally, I would not be as interested in a console purely for gaming anymore similar to how phones no longer are just to make calls. I want consoles to be at the center of my living room, replacing everything else and integrating with my entire home (i.e. PC's, smartphone, tablets and etc).
"The past is not a prediction for the future." And yet everybody seems to use it as such. 360 started as a hardcore console therefore the next xbox will be. Lets ignore that they are starting to take the casual route and that the document pretty much showed they are attacking casuals. Because 360 was hardcore at first the next one will be. As for Wii U I don't think it will be as successful as Wii but I think people are judging far too soon with it. It might not be as successful as Wii but it will still do well. But I do believe that Strongman is on to something there. No sole company seems to be the exception of the rule as far as I am aware. What was Atari's third console and how did it do?
tehpees3 that quote doesn't match your reply. you started with this "The past is not a prediction for the future." then b!tched about the 360 and Wii U.
I would not be as interested in a console purely for gaming anymore similar to how phones no longer are just to make calls. Very good analogy, I very much agree.
@tehpees3: "And yet everybody seems to use it as such. 360 started as a hardcore console therefore the next xbox will be." I'm feel confident MS knows what they are doing and what they need to do to push the next Xbox. They have recently shown lots of great promise with Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, Surface, Kinect and Xbox 360. Remember when MS was the laughing stock in the gaming industry only to unseat Playstation? That is no small feat and MS is a fierce competitor when they need to be! "The past is not a prediction for the future." Also, when people say that, they are talking about things beyond anyone's control i.e. competition, market dynamics and etc. "And yet everybody seems to use it as such. 360 started as a hardcore console therefore the next xbox will be." Based on MS history though I think MS understands hardcore gaming very well. It's no co-incidence that the Xbox 360 continues to sell well, and have tens of millions of paying Xbox Live Gold customers. If it was all roses on the other side, all their customers would have a left a long time ago. Clearly they aren't! In addition, your statement can be applied to any console manufacturer though. Neither Sony, MS or Nintendo necessarily will bring hardcore games, but I think they all will.
"The past is not a prediction for the future." It's not a perfect predictor, but I guarantee that Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo use some type of regression analysis along with hedonistic pricing to forecast future sales and identify areas for differentiation. All based on past performance.
"PS3- dominated by Wii " I think it's too early to say such a thing. My prediction is that PS3 will pass Wii by the time they both reach 110-115 million. I could bet a little money on it almost. Otherwise your comment is spot on. You might want to be carefull when saying MS abandoned their core base. They get a free pass by giving their fanbase 2-3 core games (sequels) a year. No new ip's outside Kinect at all. Still when you say something like that in N4G you might get some angry PMs saying how stupid you are.
the difference isnt how much they sold (sony ps3 is the third ...sold less than xbox and wii till now )..is how much their r losing..and between sony ms and wii..the only one losing BILLION dollars is sony...ms and nintendo r very happy with the money they did... and ppl still dont wanna realize that with all of this integration and cloud gaming..exclusives r just b***s***s for the next gen systems..there r 3 party games that sold LOTS MORE than exclusives..and the first 4 exclusives for the x360 sold like the first 11 in the top list of the ps3 exclusives....so as u see is all relative... Halo Reach Global Total as of 30th Jun 2012 (units): 9.06m Uncharted 3 Global Total as of 30th Jun 2012 (units): 4.42m + God Of War 3 Global Total as of 30th Jun 2012 (units): 4.40m =8.82 still less than halo ....that r the 2 most big exclusives for ps3 if i add Gears of War 3 Global Total as of 30th Jun 2012 (units): 5.45m theres to laugh..coz.. inFamous 2 Global Total as of 30th Jun 2012 (units): 1.22m + Heavy Rain Global Total as of 30th Jun 2012 (units): 2.15m + KillZone 2 Global Total as of 30th Jun 2012 (units): 2.85m this 3 sold + or - just how much gears3 did Then again Fable III Global Total as of 30th Jun 2012 (units): 4.80m ..we need to restart? hahaha SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation Global Total as of 30th Jun 2012 (units): 1.16m + Resistance 3 Global Total as of 30th Jun 2012 (units): 1.15m ecc ecc ecc So let MS doing their marketing they know what to do ..while sony need to pay millions for new ip and new studio and still sold less
sorry i put killzone 2 ..but i would say 3 Killzone 3 Global Total as of 30th Jun 2012 (units): 2.28m less than Killzone 2 now if we look at 3 party Mass Effect 3: 3.73m Red Dead Redemption: 11.46 (yeah u reading good...more than halo that is the world biggest console exclusive) so pls stop with this stupid thing about 3rd party against first party ...red dead redemption is better than most of exclusives for ps3 and xbox ecc ecc ecc So if MS marketing to stay with 3,4,5 exclusives that sold lots more than 15 sony exclusives...spending less....and stay with ALL the 3rd party games...+ move into apps, cables, and like we seen with kinect ..motion gaming ( kinect sold like A FREAKIN CRAZY piece of hardware while sony move ...is still on shelf)..they did a PERFECT MARKETING now if u think that sony need to pay to develop 3 or 4 or 5 studios ...spend money for marketing, spots, ecc ecc (on every game sold there r money to spend isnt just income...) while ms need to pay 1 studio 1 marketing campaign ecc ec...and sold more than 3 or 4 exclusive for the ps3..u will realize how much ms WIN i know that u will disagree ..this is a sony fanboy site..but that r facts...i let u dream on something else ps. Kinect Sports Global Total as of 30th Jun 2012 (units): 4.36m this is what u call shovelware....go to naughty dog to explain why kinect sports sold how much they did with uncharted 3 (big freakin exclusive!)...now... while ms is laughing hard
"the difference isnt how much they sold (sony ps3 is the third ...sold less than xbox and wii till now )" I think it's pretty pointless for you to say something like that. "is how much their r losing..and between sony ms and wii..the only one losing BILLION dollars is sony...ms and nintendo r very happy with the money they did... " What...? I'm not talking about profits at all. What makes you think I care? You are wrong about this but I won't even bother replying since it's so offtopic regarding my comment. ".there r 3 party games that sold LOTS MORE than exclusives" Oh you want to play the sales game? You just do that. I'll play games. The rest of your comment is so irrelevant I'm not even going to bother reading it. Why the hell do you care about software sales? PS3 had more total software sales already in 2009 and I don't see that changing afterwards. Sony gets enough profit so that they keep pumping out games all the time. The invest on new ips all the time too. As a gamer tell me what is the downside of that? Wait what? You are an investor instead of a gamer? Oh ok...nvm. Umm.. Kinect sport was bundled to death. You bringing this up means you don't really know anything about these things. Would you look at those agree/disagree ratios. Noone is never ever going to have a leg to stand on when saying this site is a PS3 fanboy haven after this. All of you people are just circle jerking around sales numbers and I find that laughable at best. Go buy another copy of Steel Battalion Kinect so that you can rub it's zales numbers in my face next time and feel proud about yourselves. smh... unbelievable. I'm going to have to put this up here. This quote here is so unbelievable I cannot believe you just said that: "Kinect Sports Global Total as of 30th Jun 2012 (units): 4.36m this is what u call shovelware....go to naughty dog to explain why kinect sports sold how much they did with uncharted 3 (big freakin exclusive!)...now... while ms is laughing hard " Am I seeing things or did you just say that? And there we go again. A disagree after 6 minutes. For me? Really? Please explain....sigh... Now it's 2 disagrees in 9 minutes. PS3 fanboy haven for sure.... Update: OK Kayle. If your reply wasn't for me then ok. It helps but you do bring up stuff that are disturbing to say the least.
@insomnium2: "Why the hell do you care about software sales?" Then why do you care about hardware sales then? Clearly you two are both talking about sales, just different items! XD "Sony gets enough profit so that they keep pumping out games all the time. The invest on new ips all the time too. As a gamer tell me what is the downside of that? Wait what? You are an investor instead of a gamer? Oh ok...nvm." That is good for Sony, but fewer higher selling IPs isn't bad either if more people wants that, which it seems by the sales number. The Wii has generally had the most exclusives overall by far, but nobody is beating their chest on that! "Umm.. Kinect sport was bundled to death. You bringing this up means you don't really know anything about these things. " Do you have any proof to Kinect Sports *sales* number includes bundled games. Even last year, Kinect Sports was reported to have *sold* (yes, sold!) over 3 million copies. Clearly people wanted that! "Would you look at those agree/disagree ratios. Noone is never ever going to have a leg to stand on when saying this site is a PS3 fanboy haven after this." I'm sure I can conjure up proof of the opposite agree/disagree ratio. "Oh you want to play the sales game? You just do that. I'll play games." Really? Because I play games too, not the "number of exclusive games", but GAMES in general! I'm for games I care to play more than the number of exclusives released. The numbers doesn't matter to me, if I can't play StarCraft, Uncharted, Mario Party or Gears of War. So the number of exclusive doesn't matter as much as "the content I want" regardless of the console it is on. So go play your games, gamer!
@Strongman. Ms is only in its 2nd development cycle for games consoles. The 2nd piece of hardware released, look at its competitors who have been in the market for a significantly longer time. Yes this gen the Wii won, but MS has done pretty well so far. The xbox 360 has a decent install and attachment base so do you think MS care? I doubt it, they are well positioned in the market and are turning it into a real battle. Look at the partnerships that have been made with media platforms, on demand TV/Films, music and now Nike+ etc.. Lets not forget smart glass and all that jazz too, I do hate that MS seem to be focussing on casuals but at the same time hardcore gamers will be looking to the next gen. We speak about it on here everyday. I do agree to an extent that MS is neglecting core gamers, but if the majority of 'core' gamers are playing a FPS, MS have done pretty well with the tie ups of those franchises havent they? Yes Call Of Duty should be a dead cow, but MS made deals to ensure the COD is worth more on the xbox, lets not forget the issues PS3 gamers are having with Elite due to those tie ups.
What about sega genesis??
Xbox is just becoming a glorified cable box.
2 SKUs at launch. Partnerships with cable companies. Streaming content like OnLine. VOD. All this and a tablet controller.
If they do aim for Casual Kinect 2.0 as their main focus. No amount of Halo/Gears spam could draw me into buying their next console. If that spec sheet was real with $225 price and all of that then its likely, but ya never know.
"They have a strategy to take over the world", which is why I won't be buying one!
is it or do other people get annoyed when someone says less than 100$ they acutally mean 99.99$ + tax......that's a hundred dammmit!
More, they would be bundled light with nearly everything sold separate. That $99.99 can turn into $300.00 real quick.
"They have a strategy to take over the world".. SS: "Colonel, i'm sure the Patriots are behind this, again" CC: "Snake, you're our only hope, again"
Right? That statement sounds sinister. "Snake? Think you have just one more left in you? I think the world's gonna need your help again real soon."
Funny how Microsoft has been criticised for the last few years for abandoning the core gamers and yet it has sold very well during this time. If 2011 is any guide it will end up line ball in sales with the PS3 for 2012 and well ahead of the Wii whose sales have dropped off significantly. I think Microsoft are very well positioned for the next gen. And I think the sale of the next Xbox at about $100 (U.S.) on a contract would be a big success; after all it has worked very well for smart phones.
Funny thing is you pay more than just buying the console off the shelf in the long run. I plan on just saving up if I decide to buy it.
I know, they like to call the 360 "casual" while 360 gamers buy more core titles than everyone else. It's the same when people dismiss the Wii as a "current gen" gaming console so they they don't have to admit it won.
So the fact that it's "sold very well during this time" is somehow an indicator that it hasn't abandoned the core? Do casuals not also buy systems? Do they not outnumber the core, and thus- at LEAST potentially- contribute to more console sales? Do dumb parents not buy multiple systems for their dumb kids who break them?
I think everybody is misinterpreting the whole $299 price point in those leaked documents. Which has lead to the whole $99 subscription idea. IMO there is no way the next gen XBOX is going to be $299 unless its a cheap piece of shit. Hell the 360 is seven yrs old and MS is still charging $299 for it. To me it is more likely that we will see the subsidized subscription model @ the $299 price point and the console itself will be around $450. With the rumored 16 cores, dual gpu's, a solid state drive for dvr, built in kinect, Bluray support etc, its hard to see putting that into a package with a $299 label. People have already confused the "always on" rumored feature that ended up snow balling into "always online". I think with out a doubt there will be a subscription package, I just don't believe it will be any where close to $99 bucks.
Well the rumors are everywhere, but I do agree with ya. No way Microsoft will sell it at $299 unless they want to cut their wallet open and let it bleed dry just to grab market share from competitors. As far as cores go. If you take the fact they are rumors into account. 16 cores could mean 16 threads. A 4 core CPU on Power7 based PowerPC platform could deliver 16 threads. Dual GPUs could equate to a xx90 series GPU. I am thinking most likely candidate would be 6990M.
Typical Pachter.Doesn't every company have a "strategy to take over the world" ??
Not really. Walmart is a company focused on global penetration, but if you look at Target or Kroger they mainly focus on the North American region. It's a bold, difficult, and expensive strategy to implement correctly.
