Ouya founder: ‘We never anticipated that it would blow up like this.’

Apparently, gamers are ready for a new kind of console. After only being on the crowdfunding site Kickstarter for less than one day, the Android-powered open gaming system Ouya received over $1,425,000 from backers. The pledges are amazing, considering its 30-day goal was $950,000.

“We never anticipated that it would blow up like this.” said Ouya founder Julie Uhrman (pictured right) in an interview with GamesBeat. (Dev, Industry, Kickstarter, Ouya, Tech)

I always feel weird throwing money at kickstarter projects that blow away their initial fundraising goals, but still. I want this!
HammadTheOne  +   312d ago
Hopefully some aesome games will come for it, like the cool mobile games we have today but with a kot more power and stuff.

Dang, their's 2 mill pledged and they still got 29 days ahah.

Am really happy that this project met with such tremendous support.

here in n4g people need to get out of the "hardcore" mentality and realise that this product isn't intended to compete with Sony or ms.

its intended to be indie devs heaven, where you can get a lot of great indie titles for cheap or even free with ad support.

Based on how much money they're bringing in, they'll be at over $2M before midnight PST. Crazy.

We have (a large portion of) the industry eager to see any details about new hardware.... and you guys are surprised?!!!

(btw, I know this isn't comparable to the 720/PS4, but heck I'll take anything new right now! I'll even go as far to say I'll get a Wii U!)

Dude, what the hell was the point of adding "Go play your COD box!"

You just made yourself look like a complete fanboy tool, he didnt even mention Call of Duty, or Xbox (im assuming your unoriginal pun was intended to insult Xbox owners due to high level of sales of the Call of Duty franchise on the console, which by the way is not only a completely irrelevant argument, but also very childish).
Summons75  +   312d ago
lol its funny because you said cod
Shadowolf  +   312d ago
After hitting the market in 2009, Onlive is currently worth 1.8 billion. Far from being a flop my friend. While Onlive is still trying to fully master the cloud gaming scene their servers are constantly loaded with users taking up bandwidth. A great problem to have.

Just because it's not as mainstream as the media projected it to be, doesn't mean it's not successful.

"Just the other day people on N4G were laughing at it and saying it's going to be a pos...(in which i still agree)" FIXED

I dont think people who come on N4G realize that the community here is so small that it does not even equal 2% percent of the gaming industry.

People on here hate Call of Duty, Kinect, Angry Birds, Nintendo, Halo but yet those things sell millions.

Tacklebait  +   312d ago
lol, i just bought into it. I'm totally in need of something new and innovative. I'll be getting a ps4, 720 day one... which ever comes first.

Currently got a good savings account for "toys", although the ms surface pro might drain it shortly!

Kinda of excited to see which direction ouya goes.. I have to admit, i'm not a huge fan of the name.
ConstipatedGorilla  +   312d ago
I did too. I pledged $129 to get the console and an extra controller. It looks promising and I love new toys. Like you, I will still get PS4, 720, and even Wii U though lol.
Patriots_Pride  +   312d ago
This is just proof that The WiiU will sell millions with the 1 to 2 year head start that they will have over MS and Sony.

Sony and MS have got to be the dumbest companies in world for not revealing a next gen console this E3.
kmanmx  +   312d ago
You've got to be dumb if you think you're smarter than two of the worlds most influential technology companies.

You think the PS4 and Xbox 720 are ready, just sat in the CEO's office while he plays games and laughs at everyone begging for info ? Whenever the first game show comes along when they have something to show, they will.

.... that is IF the Wii U is leaps and bounds a better game machine than the PS360 or the Wii.
J_Cob  +   312d ago
I hope you're not relating the touchpad on the controller as the reason why so many people are funding it. Also, it being new has nothing to do with it since the hardware is rather lacking for PC games. Since PC games aren't really optimized for low spec hardware.

It's about how open the system is to hackers, modders, indie devs unlike Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft consoles.

The Ouya is currently scheduled for a March 2013 release.
Well if any word gets out before that release of MS or Sony launching a new console for holiday 2013, that could effect the sales of the Ouya.
Shadowolf  +   312d ago
Possibly, but @ $99 the OUYA will attract the impulse shopper by the droves. Intelligent marketing will be the key. The OUYA has no intentions of stealing marketshare from the big three. It's developed to cater to a different crowd. However, because there are hundred of thousands of gamers intrigued by the idea of creating there own games (see LBP/LBP2) and launching them online for the world to experience, now with financial $$ model that is open, offers unlimited revenue potential.
joeorc  +   312d ago
@Shadowolf
exactly, this system runs on Android 4.0 and every retail unit is a development unit kit from the get go! It's made for not only consumer's but developers that already make games that go onto smartphones and Tablets and smart TV's to be ran on a TV screen with a controller as the target point of I/O User control.

That's the point , The games can be made with dedicated physical control's, and the tools they use will not go to waste because they already make games for smart phones and Tablets and smat tv's already. This unit can run directX 10.0+ and shader model 4+ that's the point.

Games such as shadow gun, and other HD Android games can already work on the hardware. at good frame rates with no real problem in making sure the content can fit and run well on this unit.

the very fact it is running the exact same chipset as the google nexus 7 tablet and it's only $100.00 at retail!

its the same hardware as the freaking Transformer Prime!

for $100.00 no wonder people are already putting money toward this thing

miyamoto  +   312d ago
So basically any Android games and apps can work for Ouya?
I am sure when they announce the games on national TV that's when the action will begin.

Although I saw Android games doing fine when mirrored to HD TVs, them Android games need to be converted to 720p also in order to appeal to the core gamers.

Guwapo77  +   312d ago
I know what you mean, I've seen too many come and go. I just don't see how an open platform is going to keep developers around...atleast not the big ones. I see games made out of their garage hoping one day one of the gaming giants buys their IPs.

Or make a clone of a game and sell millions like Angry Bird.

...who knows, my ear will be to the streets with this project.
ConstipatedGorilla  +   312d ago
I know what you mean in a sense, but it's only $99. That's next to nothing.
Shadowolf  +   312d ago
Exactly! It's all about marketshare. Regardless of the inevitability of new consoles hitting the scene with unlimited power, price point is a BIG deal.

As Guwapo77 stated "I've seen to many come and go" which is the truth however, if the OUYA can grab a significant and steadily increasing marketshare, publisher will be unable to ignore it's influence.
smoothdude  +   312d ago
I think this is the perfect opportunity for something like this to come out. Sony and Microsoft are not releasing new consoles anytime soon, and it is clear that gamers are ready for something new. My only concern is hackers hacking the online aspect of games like COD.

Only time will tell if this will be successful or not, however, I have the lets wait and see approach.
WeskerChildReborned  +   312d ago

This may be the future, especially if it's performance is comparable to PS3/XboX.

If it's easy to program game over.

I dont really get that hype lol. I play games on my tablet with bluetooth controller and my tablet streams the picture to the projector. I got a Samsung GalaxyTab for 50 dollars because it was a demonstation model.

The problem I have is: Why are so many "gamers" hyping this because its new and stuff but at the same time bash WiiU and rant at "casual gamers" WTF?

I mean you will get smartphone and tablet games on this device,
FREE games is a lie because you will only get demos and free to play korean grinder mmorpgs and stuff like S4 league or Warrock etc.

Everyone thinking he/she will get FREE "hardcore" GAMES untill the end of time without paying a cent didn't think much.

P.S. every Disagree I get shows how RIGHT I am.

So go go go!

P.P.S I wonder if this will end with Samsung releasing Samya Sony Sonya(lol) Acer Acya HP HaPya etc... like everyone released tablets or netbooks, so they can ride on the novelty train.

No one is expecting "hardcore" games, at least not recent ones. The thing is, it's completely open. That opens up an entire world of possibilities. It is most assuredly going to be a fantastic emulating device. You already have emulators on the Android store. This thing is perfect for that.

The community has shown that they can do some pretty incredible things with technology (think Kinect hacks). $130 and you're getting a lot. I don't think anyone is expecting "hardcore". They're expecting unique and fun for relatively cheap. I can get behind that.
HyperBear  +   312d ago
I'll admit it. When I first heard about this OUYA kickstarter project, I initally thought that this was going to flop right out of the gate, and that they wouldnt be able to get anywhere near what the Big 3 were/are doing in the gaming industry.

Today, I don't know what it is, but I think this, while may not sell mega-millions like the big 3 and sales won't be high due to limited number of "paid-for" games and accessories, I believe this will impact the entire Gaming Industry for the "Next-Generation".

This is the perfect console (and I also likd that it is being called a gaming console) for indie developers, mobile game platformers and the consumer base in general who enjoy gaming from time to time and also like their mobile counterparts. It runs android 4.0 with their UI interface overlay (which looks kinda like the current Xbox 360 Metro UI), everything in the machine can be hackable and doesnt void the warranty, but I think the biggest thing of it all, it will help prove that console gaming in general is not dead, and it will not be killed of by mobile gaming and pc gaming. This will also help those developers and content creators get noticed in the gaming industry and chances of getting noticed increases.

Will it be perfect, who knows. Obviously with the current spec sheet, its not going to "WOW" us majorly in the graphics dept. and with the HDMI output, I highly doubt any of the mobile games can output (or will look good being output) into 1080p, unless the game was specially designed for the OUYA, with no mobile game, but then it comes back to the specs and how much can you really push out of a Tegra3 with 1GB of ram. We will have to wait and see come spring 2013, I believe the implications of this are astronomical and it won't take long after they've launched that the big 3 actually look at their own consoles and react accordingly.
Kidmyst  +   312d ago
Sounds cool but if it's encouraged to hackers to meddle, what door will this open? I mean not in a good way. IE Cheaters in MP games. Still sounds promising and what young devs can make.
swansong  +   312d ago
I would wait for the final specs that are set in stone because a $100 seems so cheap for what is inside the console. In other words how would they make any profit off of it at that price with the specs they are giving right now. "The box will include a quad-core ARM Cortex A9 processor, a Nvidia Tegra 3 graphics processing unit, 8GB of Flash memory, 1GB RAM, and Bluetooth connectivity. The controller takes a cue from the upcoming Nintendo Wii U console: It can play traditional games but also has a touchpad. This means that developers can create special experiences for the Ouya console, Uhrman said. The company is seeking content such as role-playing games, shooters, and casual games."

that's a question that's very valid, but your too late it's already been asked and answered.

the cost to use chipsets like ARM inc.'s Cortex is far cheaper, to use than say PC part's and the performance is quite High for it's cost.

think about it..single board , with no huge amounts of active cooling needed, All designs are already established done on ARM Holding's end, so a much small R&D to get everything from prototype to mass production is much faster to market production than other systems. This is like the PSVita's hardware being used for the Living room, think of it..No screen, no built in touch pad on the back, no amoled screen. the box is much simpler. here is an example of the board they are using i would gather.

and it used the Tegra 2

here is the spec's:

trim slice vs your car key's in size

COST: http://trimslice.com/web/or...

REMEMBER THAT WAS IN 2011 its cheaper now

Will the Ouya be upgradable?
Since I play on my Galaxy S2, the big question is will Ouya follow the yearly upgrade model the Android mobile devices do?

Tegra3 quad-core processor
1GB RAM
8GB of internal flash storage
HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth LE 4.0
USB 2.0 (one)
Wireless controller with standard controls (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button), a TOUCHPAD
Android 4.0

See there a touch pad...will it also be a screen like on the PS Vita?

Even if they say Ouya is bringing Android games to the TV I think Ouya will be missing a great feature if we wont have an option to play touchscreen games on its controller which is standard for Android games and emulators.
