MGS 4 in its entirety should be mentioned on this list, just one huge moment after another.
The Bioshock opening sequence was amazing, one of the best opening sequences this generation I'd say.
Also, Mass Effect 2 and 3 were filled with huge moments, from start to finish.
Heavy Rain it was dismembering your finger in front of a camera on the off chance that you would see your son again, way more intense than any of the gratuitous gore-filled crap you see in a lot of ther games to be honest.
Good list, it must have been tough to come up with those. There have been so many this gen that I would be hard pressed to list just a few ...
I also thought of ...
Heavy Rain : Escaping the crazy doctors basement. God of War 3 : THE WHOLE F'ING Game!!!! Seriously, every Boss battle and death was incredible! inFamous : When you realize Cole and Kessler are the same person! MGS4 : Raiden stopping the attack sub and chooping off his own arm, snake crawling through the radiation, Big Mama's (Eva) death. Bioshock : Entering Rapture, what an incredible world they created for these games to exist in. Red Dead : John Marsden's unfortunate end ... after all you had done. Star Wars : The Force Unleashed : Using the Force to down a Star Destroyer!
etc, etc, etc....what a great gen. Storytelling in games went to the next level during this gen!
Yeah pretty good list, mostly ps3 exclusives. That's Sony pushing great games on the ps3 for their consumers. Ms too, I mean they give 360 owners halo and gears of war every year. So win win on both the gaming fronts. But if you want variety you need a ps3.
I would include resistance 3, killzone 2 and 3 as they also had epic scenese/scenarios that I enjoy and replay at times.
that was definitely my favorite moment this generation. My second favorite was the first time playing a level in motorstorm apocalypse, when all the sewage pipes explode in front of you :)
Portal is my all time favorite game, but funnily the "cake is a lie" moment did not stick with me.
you really have to play it to get it, but MGS4 is one of the best games if not the best game ever made.
i always beat it, play other games, and say this is my new favorite, mgs4 wasn't thaaat great but then i go back to mgs4 and say it tops every game ever made ever.
You couldn't have said it better. MGS4 is an achievement in gaming. People forget the first time they revisited Shadow Moses. It's chilling and powerful.
In fact, THAT might be the greatest moment this gen for me. Landing in the snowy area, making my way through, and then, seeing Shadow Moses, while the music sweeps over the scene.
I would have put the last mission on Halo Reach on the list. I remember playing through the Reach campaign with 3 friends over Xbox Live the night the game released. They all died before me on that last part, your visor is all cracked and you know your not going to make it, but you fight on anyway. So classic in my opinion.
Well I'm sure you are not even familiar with what I'm talking about, the pure emotion of the moment. What games on a "proper system" am I missing out on? I own a PS3 and have played a ton of games on it, own a Wii and have had a blast on that as well. I simply mentioned the Reach moment because it was an epic sort of thing that I still remembered offhandedly.
Escaping earth in mass effect 3. Mordins death. Grunt kicking ass with aralach company. Legions death. Jesus you could do a whole article on 'amazing moments in this generations gaming. From mass effect.'
The twist in Bioshock. First time you get out of the sewers in Oblivion and realise how much freedom you have. Getting your first chainsaw kill in Gears, then again when you manage to do it online. The set pieces from Uncharted 2, as well as the entire snow cave level. The Chernobyl level in MW. Killing a dragon in Skyrim. Far, far too many great moments to choose from this gen.
Although, technically, that was last generation, I agree. Word is that P4's ending (or some part of the game) sheds some light on what might have happened. I still haven't finished it, though, and I'm just gonna wait on The Golden for my Vita.
PSP WAS current gen. It's now last gen, since both of the new handhehlds are out. I would have still considered P3P to be last-gen, though, since that's when the original came out. Same with P1 and P2: they came out on the PSP, but they originally released on PS1, so they're two gens old now.
I agree. I don't anyone saw that coming at all. *spoiler just in case*. Killing Zeke in Infamous 2 wasn't any picnic either. That was a very emotional moment killing your best and only friend who stood their helplessly holding a gun at you even though he knew he was no match for you.
@ creatchee. Add to that the GOW2 multi leveled battle against the Colossus of Rhodes. That thing was relentless and the part where it's foot suddenly crashed through the roof and when it grabbed you and tossed you through the air was epic.
I loved the entering Mexico scene in Red Dead. And also along with that, after Max Payne shave his head and first enters the slums of Sau Paulo with the Brazilian hip hop playing. Pretty sweet scene in Max Payne 3
The heist mission from GTA4 The end showdown in Portal 2 The ending of Limbo The first time you met a berserker in Gears of War 1 The beginning of Mass Effect 2
Nullo e reale. Tutto e lecito. Requiescat in pace.
By heist are you referring to the bank job with the McCreary's? I actually preferred the final mission, going after Rascalov or J.Peg, depending on which way you went earlier.
I would also add standing at the highest peak in Panau (Just Cause 2). That's when it really dawned on me just how big the 414 square miles really is. And with the draw distance, the view was just awesome.
The opening and Poseidon battle in God of War 3 for me. The sheer awesomeness and scope of that has not been matched by any game yet IMO. It's not just about the graphics either - it's about perfect design and ingenious pacing/crazy moments.
When you face Zeke on the cathedral roof in inFamous 2.
When Elena "died" in Uncharted 2.
The final fight with Ganondorf in Skyward Sword.
The current gen had really started hitting a plateau in terms of graphics and physics, allowing for some very good stories and experiences to be crafted. I'm gonna miss it. SONY, here's relying on YOU to give us *some* form of BC!
That and when you first board the Ishimura in Dead Space 1.
I felt the same way I felt when I played Resident Evil on PSone as a kid ... I was like " Can I turn the F around and forget I ever saw anything! ". Dead Space made me jump so much.
When you go back to the Ishimura in Dead Space 2 its like going back to your worst nightmare. Good call on the Dead Space 2 eye poker!
Not for nothin, but that finger chopping scene may have been the coolest part of any video game I have ever played. Not only do you select to cut the finger off, but you select the manner by which to do it, from an array of rusty and scattered tools. Then you actually have to use the correct motion to sever the dam thing! How digitally awesome was that? After the finger was off and Ethan was writhing and screaming, I couldn't believe what I just experienced. We've come a long way from Karateka and Asteroids!
Some of my favorites include every part of Mass Effect 1 and 2, the eye machine of Dead Space 2, the final boss in Skyward Sword, the destruction of the UNSC Frigate by High Charity in Halo: Reach and scene in Halo 3 when the Covenant ship enters Earth populated by the Flood. That cutscene was awesome.
Oh and the entire game of Alice: The Madness Returns.
The Bioshock opening sequence was amazing, one of the best opening sequences this generation I'd say.

the game is amazing
In fact, THAT might be the greatest moment this gen for me. Landing in the snowy area, making my way through, and then, seeing Shadow Moses, while the music sweeps over the scene.
And I'd add the first time being invaded in Demons' Souls.
Seeing your world getting broken into by another player was freaky stuff.
Yeah, back to MGS4...
Act 4 is simply amazing if you're a MGS1 fan
also when raiden saved snake, that was the most noble/ admirable feeling you'd get coming from a video game, period.
metal gear have so many cool moments that I can't remember them all. best game this gen!
I am not really a cod fan, but I remember on modern warfare 2 when the chopper got hit by the nuclear device. awesome!
heavy rain is another game full of emotions. really hard to leave this one out of the list.
On topic: the entirety of Journey.
That's how I would look at it, anyway.
@ creatchee. Add to that the GOW2 multi leveled battle against the Colossus of Rhodes. That thing was relentless and the part where it's foot suddenly crashed through the roof and when it grabbed you and tossed you through the air was epic.
Riding into mexico for the first time in Red Dead Redemption.
The whole of Assassin's Creed II
I'd also add:
The heist mission from GTA4
The end showdown in Portal 2
The ending of Limbo
The first time you met a berserker in Gears of War 1
The beginning of Mass Effect 2

Killing Evil Face in Atelier Totori was also great for me. It's worth mentioning Bastion as a whole.
I felt the same way I felt when I played Resident Evil on PSone as a kid ... I was like " Can I turn the F around and forget I ever saw anything! ". Dead Space made me jump so much.

Just a thought.
