Sweet! I got Gamefly recently and I'm hoping that can give me a boost in the Gamerscore department. One thing I love about the Xbox 360 and their Achievements is that every single game supports them, dating back to its launch in 2005, so there are a lot of games that throw it at ya.
That's the thing about achievements: it essentially means you've played a lot of games. For all we know, it could be Sesame Street and Dora filling up his list.
Does it matter what game or games people are playing? Gaming isn't dictated by the types of games people play, but rather by the fun they are having with those games.
No two people are exactly alike in what game types they enjoy. Some people play a bit of everything, so who really cares what it is, as long as they are a gamer and having a good time.
No, it doesn't "matter," except for when people start bragging about their score. As best I can tell, a gamerscore is supposed to be some indication of your gamer-ness. Having a high score is supposed to be really important.
People who brag about what their score is would say it matters, I'm certain. Otherwise, there'd be no need for the bragging in the first place.
Gamerscore isn't an indication of someones gamer-ness, lots of gamer's play the Wii and that has no Achivements, a ton of PS3 games lack Trophies. I'd say Achievements are a way of tracking what you've done, I often go and look back on the many accomplishments I've attained throughout the years.
At the same time I've never really bragged about it to anyone, its more for my own use. Sometimes people will say to me "Wow, you got 50k Gamerscore, that's beast". I don't really care either way, I just like to have something (for the most part) to show for beating games.
I don't think very many people go into the idea of Achievements with the intention to one up people.
Don't worry about the guy above you, he's obviously upset about Microsoft being involved in videogames in the first place. So he will do whatever it takes to discredit their input because they are in direct competition with his favorite company.
The truth of the matter is people shouldn't care what other people play because you're right, it's all about entertainment. If someone wants to get a perfect score for Dark Souls by grinding for hundreds of hours all the more power to them. If they want to master the moves in Dance Central why should that bother anyone? The real issue is some people have created this box and can't really see outside of that box. Call it narrow-minded or ignorance but that attitude is quite rampant in forums. I think one of the issues of this so called harcore group is they feel like they aren't being represented well, so they talk a lot thinking nobody is listening. Chances are outside of game forums like this they're right. People tend to tune them out because instead of coming here to discuss things maturely often times they go on the attack.
I still don't think they should be offering certain rewards for online multiplayer. Not if gamers choose to focus on them rather than the game at hand.
Oh and by the way, people who use XBOX Live do know how they attained their Achievements and with which games they played. It's all right there for others to see. I guess those who only use the Playstation Network don't know all the finer details XBOX Live has and just how informative it is for each account.
@Chunky "a ton of PS3 games lack Trophies" Right only games before 2009 lack trophies, so i wouldn't call it a ton. And unless your a trophy whore bid deal.
"Sometimes people will say to me "Wow, you got 50k Gamerscore, that's beast". I don't really care either way"

Dude make up your damn mind already, which is it because your saying contradictory things.
fuc* achievements or trophies i play for fun and when i need to be good i try, but the fun is in not having to strain your every move for a damn fictional cyber reward of a mere number!
congratulations on getting 200k. However cheats, glitches, hacks and game saved files can get boost your score without earning all of the achievements.
game saved files can be found online and downloaded to your xbo 360 and unlock all of the achievements without even playing the game. multiple versions of the same game: insert disc and the achievements magically unlock.
i never liked the gamer scores, seems like its just a bunch of number piling up. trophies feel more accomplished i smile whenever i see a gold or silver trophy honestly i have not 1 platinum yet but the trophies just feel better.
You'll get there if you keep the game and try long enough. I got like seven or so plats but they are on all games I like to play; if you keep that in mind, the plats will start to pile up.
Actually the questions would be what games did he platinum and what are the time stamps for the trophies like(ie real or hacked). Yeah if he had 200 platinums, the ps3 owners would be very skeptical.
And 50 platinums, that wouldn't be anything unheard of legitimately, not very common though maybe 35-40 would be more reasonable. Of course, you would have to talk to a actual ps3 owner, not just whine typical sony fanboy.
No interest. I complete every game I play. I don't search for achievements. If I do something awesome I know it and will be cursed out by the dead player on the other team. Then I can smile. If not then owell.
200,000 is a pretty awesome score. I'm not even close to that yet. My goal is to have 50,000 by the time the next xbox launches.lol at the sony fans here hating on a person's gamer score. Change that title to trophies and they would be all for it.
Both Achievements and Trophies are a great extension to replay value, but c'mon give Sony credit where it's due for their Trophy system that build upon Achievements, which are simply a number that increases.
The Trophy system is tiered and is a measurable indicator of skill.. or lack of, if you only have a bunch of bronze trophies that you get for completing a level or something. That is where the difference lies, and the system is a step ahead of Achievements for that reason. The more gold and platinum trophies you have, the higher your level is likely to be. It would be great if Microsoft implemented that for the next Xbox, otherwise it's just a score that keeps on increasing.

If they changed the title to trophies, it wouldn't even be an appropriate title, since that would suggest they have bronze, silver, gold and platinums. A Platinum Trophy is the best indicator of skill and dedication for a game by far in any system. Gamerscore can't touch it. A person who has 20,000 GS is most likely someone who just plays a lot of games, and there's nothing wrong with that - it shows they enjoy games. A person who has 20 Platinums though, is someone who is dedicated and skilful and that is the real point of a measurable achievement system.
You can see just straight up on someone's profile how good they are by how many Bronze, Silver, Gold and Plats they have and that's brilliant!
You got it all wrong dude... A high gamer score does mean something. Not only can you see how much they play but you can look at each individual achievement and see how skillful they are too just like trophies. Their is no difference only that ms gives you points which you can use towards other things which is way cooler than trophies.Plus, all games on the 360 have achievements and sony has a lot of them that don't have trophies..Achievements are way cooler IMO.
All wrong? As far as I know, there is no clear cut way to visualise skill from someone's XBL profile. Like I said you can go on any PSN profile and instantly see how many bronze, silver, gold and platinums that player has... immediately. It's great. There's just no alternative for that with Achievements. A Platinum on Xbox 360? There's no comparison. Then there's the RPG-like user levelling trophy function.
It's not surprising that you think achievements are way cooler since MS implemented them on consoles first and that will always be the lasting impression for you. All I'm asking is to judge things comparatively. I outlined the difference clearly. The fact that you say there's no difference other than MS giving you points, is a complete lie and supreme ignorance.
"way cooler"? Microsoft gives you reward points. That's cool. Well guess what? Sony started their reward program in 2010 and it's still being explored, so I'd say that's just as cool especially since they're gonna be doing something with it in the future. http://blog.us.playstation....
And I know this is getting slightly off topic, but you only get those Xbox rewards as a Gold member. So... breaking it down, you can get a year's PS+ subscription and get a ton of content during the year for the same cost as being a Gold member. Just sayin.
Sure, there's a whole bunch of PS3 games that don't have trophies, but going into the future, all PS3, Vita and PS4 games will. It doesn't really negate the system itself.
@ digital. 1000 points on a game is a platinum. So you can determine skill if you would look through someone's profile. But is it easier to tell on PS3? Yes.
Avatar: The Last Air Bender, king kong, terminator: salvation, fight night round 3 and other easy games that require little time to unlock 1000 points. Steer clear of online games that require you being the best ranked player and spending lots of hours to get 20 or 50 points.
200k can be obtained by playing through the easy shovel ware games.
High rated games that require lots of time to obtain the achievements online and in offline mode should be avoided if you want a big score in a very quick time.
I guess its a slow news day, i got my 20 the platinum the other week, im gonna go write an article
Edit: I got the Dark Souls platinum 2 days ago so its 21 Ps, how could i forget, no point writing an article now, who cares about odd numbers?
I honestly don't know what to say, but perhaps achievements shouldn't be measured by score?

But writing a whole article just to boast about it is pretty lame.

I prefer real life achievements over digital ones.
This applies to trophies/achievements as a whole.
Gamerscore? Couldn't care less really.
Neither are a measure of true skill anyway. Then again, why anyone would care how "skilled" they are in comparison to other gamers is beyond me.
And 50 platinums, that wouldn't be anything unheard of legitimately, not very common though maybe 35-40 would be more reasonable. Of course, you would have to talk to a actual ps3 owner, not just whine typical sony fanboy.
It gives me targets in the game to go for and once I have completed a game and there are still achivmetns to get it gives me replay value..
BUT! I dont go and rent games to get a few extra points thats just sad!!
