The gaming industry is so bad right now even GTA V can't help, so how do we get out of the deficit?

The video game industry is currently in one of the biggest deficits it has seen in years. According to a new report it is so bad, that even a big title release like GTA V could not help the industry enough to go positive. So what should be done in order to get out of the deficit and back into the positive side of things? (Grand Theft Auto V, Industry, PC, PS3, Tag Invalid, Xbox 360)

MariaHelFutura  +   316d ago
Does anyone find it a coincidence that this is the longest generation ever?
Yi-Long  +   316d ago
The industry isn't bad' right now....
... it's just the end of the current console generation, so there have been less AAA-titles coming out compared to the last few years, thus sales will naturally drop a bit.

It's no big deal and nothing to get worried about.

As soon as Playstation and MS come out with their new consoles, and assuming they don't screw it up by doing something stupid, and the next-gen games arrive, you'll see it will all pick up again.

There are more and more gamers each and every year. And none of us will be dropping this hobby in a hurry.

It's just been a slow year so far, when it comes to big games with mass-appeal coming out.
Shaman  +   316d ago
Yea because ME3 and Max Payne 3 are surely not AAA games. Seriously, industry is falling apart. Devs know it, we know it and MS and Sony sure as hell know it. Consoles are not selling anymore since everybody has them already. Its been 7 years, and there is simply no demand for them anymore. Plain and simple. Next gen is close and everyone is pushing for it to come sooner.
sfsethfitzgerald  +   316d ago
It is coming close to the end of this generation but that is not the reason for the failure. I think it is mainly the lack of good games, but tons of them have come out within the last year. Just so far this year it is lacking big time.
LastDance  +   315d ago
Shaman..you are contradicting yourself.

By your logic, everytime something has less demand because everyone already owns it, it has "fallen apart".
CommonSense  +   315d ago
It's the incredibly weak economy.

Food stamps don't buy video games.

They do buy cigarettes, however.
Amazingmrbrock  +   315d ago
AAA games don't automatically mean good games. There are lots of big budget triple A games coming out last year this year and next year. The problem is they grow increasingly underwhelming. There's only one answer as to why. Big publishers are becoming increasingly conservative, as they need to increasingly get more money from each ip.
Army_of_Darkness  +   315d ago
I'm sure it had something to do with the bad economy...
Lots of people losing their jobs and shit... Yet still, the gaming industry seems to be doing pretty well when you think about it... I honestly don't see a problem for them, cause I mean why else is there such a high demand for game developers now and for the past few years right?!
zag  +   315d ago
People only buy extras if they have the money.

the EU and US markets aren't even out of the GFC problem and the current EU could see the next major GFC happen as soon as the end of this year.

The countries that are still going ok have slowed right down almost to the point where there's no big money moving around and the small money that is isn't going to make share prices go up.

The real problem is the CEO's and money people who are expecting and always wanting to have more money earned and the market just isn't like that anymore.

For the last 5 years it's been bust and bankrupt.

for the 15 years before that it was boom and become stupidly rich.

So with knowing that if you had the choice between buying a console or putting some extra money into the house payment people will go for the house payment.

it's life... consoles just don't offer much compared to a car or house etc, overall.

Seriously though. Everybody I know is getting bored with the current systems. Nothing feels new it's just more of the same. While games are looking better graphics wise and only getting even higher in quality gameplay mechanics are at a hault. A new generation with new innovations needs to come which is why Nintendo is keeping close to five years with a new console this year. Probably because they're the ones hurting the most. We need new systems that do something different, and I'm really sick of all the peripherals added to these systems too. To extend the current generations we keep seeing new controllers and peripherals all the time. Just make a NEW SYSTEM. I don'ts want four dualshocks, four moves, four navigation controllers, four xbox controllers, a kinect, four wiimotes, motion plus extensions, nunchucks, wii wheels, zappers, sensor bars, cameras, pro controllers, a nd even more, just STOP. And on top of that if almost everything wasn't a first peron shooter we wouldn't have games selling so bad. For some reason that's all people want which is why it's all people make. More risks need to be taken. New genres made. New control schemes made. But most importantly, new systems need to come out or games will continue to feel like cookie cut outs.

Actually, if any game could spice up this generation, it would be GTA V in my opinion. Rockstar has some of the most creative people in the industry. Millions of theories appear online when a new GTA is announced, yet Rockstar ALWAYS finds a way to create something no one thought off and impress the living hell out of people. They always push and raise the bar with each and every game they release.
LastDance  +   315d ago
I don't really agree with that at all. in-fact the only things GTA4 had over say San Andreas was the ability to hang out with your cousin and read emails.

this generation is coming to a end. there are devs that are already making 2-3 next gen games for the next couple years, why would they bother with this gen if its coming to a end. GTAV will be the LAST OF US.lol
koh  +   316d ago
I can think of at least 2 reasons developers would work on games for the current generation; a larger install base to sell to, and presumably it would be less expensive to build a less graphically intensive game.

That's not to say they SHOULD focus on those reasons, but I have to imagine it sits large in many developers' minds.

It's just the console industry that's completely broken at the moment. Should be fixable.
cervantes99  +   316d ago
Stop making soooo many military shooters - period!

Get back to creative stories and unique objective based co-op experiences instead of just "kill opponent"

that's what would peak my interest again. I've actually been playing some HD remakes and gameplay wise they are far superior than most games out currently.
FarCryLover182  +   315d ago
5 years ago, you all would call me crazy, but now....we need some World War II games. The pacific fronts were barely done and WW2 would be cool for some more FPS. I like FPS games but all this modern stuff is driving me nuts.
Wintersun616  +   315d ago
How about games with more puzzles, open worlds, adventures, good stories, good characters, lots of side missions, excellent stories? I'll take a game with any 3 of those combined over any military FPS game out there.

What change would going back to WW2 bring us? We've already been there and seen that and if we went back that way, it would still be the same boring military FPS BS; go there, kill them, destroy that, repeat. We need less generic shooters and more diverse games with different kinds of gameplay. Give us variety and challenge our brains for a change.
FarCryLover182  +   315d ago
Well, I was strictly talking about FPS titles there. I wasn't meaning that we need more FPS titles. I'm sick of them as well. I would like more games with puzzles, yes. I would like some nice platformers too like Crash Bandicoot like back in the day.
Wintersun616  +   315d ago
I should've noticed that before. Guess my read between the lines skill was still asleep. :) But yeah, now that I see what you mean, a little variety in the theme of military FPS games wouldn't hurt.
joab777  +   315d ago
Actually, could it be that reality is catching up with the industry. The economy is in shambles. The actual unemployment rate in the Us is sky high and debt is at an all time high. Job security doesn't exist, inflation is rising, cost of living is rising and eventually it has an impact on video games being sold. How is this year different than any other. There's a new console release, halo 4, BO2, AC3, RE6, & GTA5? Those aren't triple a titles? Also, games are decentralizing. More people are playing mobile, mobas, mmos, Indie games etc. Money is short and spread thin. On top of that, all other sales are divided between like 6 -10 ips.

But mainly in a country of 360 million+ people and a workforce of 180 million, when over 100 million don't have full time jobs, games become a luxury. Yeah, it's the end of a cycle and people are tiring and many games are rehashes, but the novelty of sitting home and spending unemployment money on video games wears as people realize it isn't getting better.

this generation not over yet still a lote of life left for the ps3 cant wait for the next god of war
mxkite  +   315d ago
I think that it is the result of exhausting the actual generation and they still want to bleed consumers 1 or 2 years more
Wintersun616  +   315d ago
IMO it's not about exhausting the generation, it's about exhausting the gamers. We need more original ideas and lots of different kinds of games. Multiplayer-centric generic shooters will only get you so far. Games like Dishonored, The Last Guardian, GTA V & Watch Dogs are what I'm anticipating the most because because I know they'll have new kinds of gameplay, good stories and something different to do.
sllshrm  +   315d ago
The games industry is in shithole right now because the big AAA titles are walking away with all the money and small games aren't selling much....uneven distribution of money.
Parallax_Films  +   315d ago
I'm so damn sick of this downed economy. I'm only 22 so I don't even know what it's like to live as a young adult within a healthy economy, but it can't be this depressing. Everything seems to be falling apart and I've (like many) had no work in over three months.. argh. :(

how about release more AAA games in the summer.

instead of shoving 55 games into October and November

that could help games sell a bit more
DwightOwen  +   315d ago
Exactly. All the kids have summer jobs and no new releases to buy.

Tzunoy  +   315d ago
Plug in your Super Nintendo and PS1 and PS2 and have real fun with games.
DwightOwen  +   315d ago
Personally, I'm sick of being nickel-and-dimed to death with DLC that should have been included on the disc. Bethesda basically opened Pandora's Box in 2006 with their retarded horse armor (really???) for Oblivion, and it's only gotten worse since then. Unfortunately, until gamers wise up and refuse to tolerate such practices, they will continue to bleed our wallets dry.
turnerdc  +   315d ago
Game development cost has risen dramatically since last generation. Reflecting on the past few generations it's amazing to see all of the technology that is now implemented into modern games. Professional voice acting, motion capture, complex 3D modeling, online multiplayer, among many other things.Development teams and advertising budgets have also grown much larger. Additionally with the advent of the internet, support for a game continues long after the release with additional patches and bug fixes having to be worked on. On top of all this you also have used game retailers and piracy also growing larger further taking a bigger chunk out of profits. It's no surprise that the gaming industry is experiencing problems. To put things in perspective, the average cost of a Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo game in 1995 was around $40 - $70. Compare a game like Sonic 3 to something like Uncharted and realize prices haven't changed all that much.
