Far Cry 3 Interview: ‘A Game For Adults, By Adults’ – Ubisoft Gets Controversial
Far Cry 3 speaks about its controversial E3 2012 demo, how developers should be handling mature content, multiplayer, map editor, co-op campaign and next-gen.
(Far Cry 3, PC, PS3, Wii U, Xbox 360)
Once again, I would like to see a game handling mature themes in a mature way, it would be a good step for the industry as a whole, but Far Cry 3 doesn't seem to be the game to do it so far. Happy to be proven wrong however :)
Why does whenever the topic of "adult themed games" comes up, it always refers to sex? As adults, we don't have sex all the time. An "adult themed game" would involve real relationships between partners that has sex involved but the sex isn't the be-all and end-all of the "adult theme" aspect of the game.
totally agree and I would also recommend the Walking Dead. You get some serious choices to make that seem to really affect the outcomes. Not an action game but very impressed with the story they have presented in the first two chapters.
Probably "mainstream" mixed with "new." Many games have tackled mature issues with a degree of maturity... most of which are either fairly niche, or fairly dated.
And there are certain issues that no one has really dealt with in gaming, period, mostly because there's no good way to bring 'em up with any real level of attention or maturity in a participatory medium.
You know as much as i would like to see mature themes done without extreme violence we live in a world where mature people are violent. so honestly games with extreme violence isn't all that bad.
if people are going to complain about this then what to they say to the movie industry about their movies being too violent.
when they say 18+ on the box. It means its an adult game...
Sure people who are mature enough can buy if their parent agrees..
Why is it hard for people to understand that instead of complaining like babies!!
I'm assuming more "Adult" as in mentally more than just physically; someone that wants a more mature, in depth story that has "what" moments outside the typical "Ok we need to make this more for high schoolers."
I get ya but there are titles out there that are more "mature" in theme and scope. There was this one game that I played called "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" using SCUMMVM because it was an old-style point and click type of a game. The themes that ran through it like rape, genocide, vivisection, selfishness are far more adult to me than sex which is nothing more than a pleasurable distraction. I have no mouth and I must scream came out in 1995 and I sincerely doubt that any company out there today is ballsy enough to come out with a title that has similar themes like that.
LOL a public sex scene with boobs was not for high schoolers?
It was a locker-room conversation moment.
No one can even explain what that scene had to do with the context of the story other than that he banged a girl in front of an army of jungle natives.
why? the ds had a ninja gaiden.. i just wonder why they would bother w a game like that instead of putting DOA 5 on it.. thats what i really dont get.. put a game that got a 4/10 out on a new system & not a new project.. They even had to publish it themselves cuz tecmo/koie wouldnt take the risk
They've removed all the "annoying" parts from the second game that most people considered "realistic" yet they have some sex in there to replace it.
Also, the sex scene in Far Cry 3 has nothing to do with being an emotional part of the game. The journa bangs the girl then gets up and gives a speech about killing people.
Sex + a testosterone filled speech for ultraviolence = angst-ridden teen dream game.
Putting sex and excessive violence in a game doesn't automatically mean the game itself is mature. Just that it's rated for adults.
Putting sex in a game just to say it's adult seems a little childish actually. If sex is there it should do something to evolve the characters in question, otherwise you're left with GoW's "Kratos bones a Harlot while you hear her moans and his roars" type deals which is about as far from mature as you can get.
Wanting sex in a mature adult video game is an oxymoron. What can be more adolescent then wanting to play a game to see some boobs. That's like a kid that see sex in a rated R movie and gets excited.
If you want to see boobs, watch a porn. Sex in games should be just like movies, a quick cutscene to get from one story to the next.
I think Max Payne 2 handled it well. Assassin's Creed 2 was iffy/iffy and Mass Effect 2 handled it rather well.
Sex in games is always touchy because usually it's like you said: if you're interacting with a sex scene you may as well watch porn...or better yet, go with your partner and actually have sex.
You have effectively read through PR spiel and noticed that they're just throwing out a line to reel you in.
The game itself is a COD jungle rip-off but leave it to the PR to try to convince you otherwise.
I really wish they had taken what worked in Far Cry 2 and just removed/added the stuff that needed to work. Far Cry 3 isn't even a real open-world game anymore.
And the journalist you play goes around murdering hundreds of guys...what's mature about that?
The gameplay looks identical to Call of Duty yet they're trying to sell it off as a game made for an older crowd. Adding boobs and green textures to Call of Duty doesn't make Call of Duty more mature.
CoD jungle rip-off? You've apparently not played the second game, then. And you saw a small demo and claim it's not even a real open-world game anymore? How the hell can you tell from a scripted demonstration?
It was gorgeous, open, and complex. It was unlike a lot of other shooters out there. You had to think about your loadout, think about how you approached a situation and think about how to take down guys.
You ACTUALLY HAD TO THINK. It was easy to die and easy to fail, which made it a real challenge.
I know a lot of ADD addicts claimed it was boring and repetitive, and Far Cry 2 did have its faults but it's not like it was a retread of every single other game out there.
The demo footage of Far Cry 2 was waaaaay more enticing than the demo footage of Far Cry 3. And the demo footage of Far Cry 2 was representative of the game (just like the demo footage of Far Cry Instincts was pretty much spot-on of what the game was actually like).
So yes, sir, I did play Far Cry 2 and I liked it because it was different. I'm looking at Far Cry 3 and nothing looks impressive because it's stuff we've seen 1000 times before.
LOL I cant see it already... "Move around the analogues to fondle nipples". LOL WTF im all for sexual themes in "Adult games" but sometimes I just wanna burst out laughing.
If you miss the buttons as they appear, you have the most awkward sex ever.
You are then presented with some dialogue choices to explain why you were off your game tonight.
Only happens in gaming, and its partially because parents dont have enough guts to tell their teen/pre-teen kids what they can and cant play
It doesn't. The term "adult themed" is merely a euphemism. What they REALLY mean is "depraved".
What is your definition of mature?
And there are certain issues that no one has really dealt with in gaming, period, mostly because there's no good way to bring 'em up with any real level of attention or maturity in a participatory medium.
if people are going to complain about this then what to they say to the movie industry about their movies being too violent.
you can do a mature game without violence
journey
and you can do mature games with violence
max payne 3, etc
either way im good with both.

Hardware designed by idiots, bought by sheep.
Have an internets, sir.

*rolls eyes*
