What a PlayStation 3 Hardware Revision Might Mean

"The chance of Sony unveiling a new PlayStation 3 hardware revision at Gamescom seems to be becoming more likely every day. We’ve heard rumours ranging from vague assumptions through to today’s appearance of label positioning on a new-looking casing. The PlayStation 3 has, of course, already had a hardware revision. In fact, if you count the downgrade of the launch models to exclude PlayStation 2 disc compatibility, USB ports and memory card slots, it’s had two." (PS3, Sony)

I see a price cut coming.

It means as of likely a $199 PS3 and final revisions before this is the final model to be sold while the PS4 is sold as well.

Hard to fathom why.....but it must be to lower costs.
I'd like to see that transferred to the consumer.

The WiiU might be only a "360" but, if that's true - and I suspect it's very close, then Ninny could sell it at $199 from day 1 and still make profit. And at that price it'll fly off shelves. Sony can't afford to hand market share over to Ninny, so a price cut on ps3 would be very smart indeed.

I can see Nin sell the WiiU cheap, the Wii released at $250 and was hard to find for nearly two years so I can see the same thing happening again. Price Cut for PS3 would be good.

I wonder if buying Gaiki could be a precursor to a PSTV? A streaming only box that offers all of the evolving streaming services (Netflix/MLBtv/Amazon/MusicUnl imited etc), with access to the PlayStation Store so that you can play PSone, PS2, minis and other PSN games as well have access to Gaikai.

I'm not sure if/how PS3 games could be implemented into it, perhaps that where Gaikai comes in. That is where a PS system with no disc drive could make sense. I don't envision Sony ever having their flagship console without a disc drive, especially at this point where so many people are mixed on cloud gaming. But that could be intriguing, especially if it could be released at a 99$-$150 price point.

I dont think it means anything major other than that there will probly be a price cut coming soon.

I'd be very impressed if Sony made a flat model with the shiney skin of the original fat model. Also if the manage to somehow give us an option to install the full game to the hard drive off of the disc that way games like mw3 won't make any disc/laser noise while playing multiplayer I'd be happy to sell my current ps3 for a new model.

A price drop, duh...

Sony was very cautious when the redesigned PS3 was unveiled and corrected any journalists who referred to it as the "PS3 Slim" that it was in fact just a new PS3 model.

$199 won't be enough of a price drop. $149 would be perfect, but it'll also have to be as small as the PS2 Slim.

Umm the ps3 will never be that tiny bro. It has a harddrive and bluray player it ain't shrinking that much.
