Warren Spector: "David Cage is a genius"

Warren Spector has hailed Heavy Rain maker David Cage as no less than "a genius".

That's from the mouth of one of the chief creators of Deus Ex, System Shock and Thief.

"David Cage is a genius. If Tim [Schafer - a "really good friend"] isn't the best writer in gaming, David is," Spector told MCV Pacific.

"I've never met the guy - I'd love to sit down and talk to him. But, basically, Heavy Rain works because it's five scripts all jammed together and meshing together and branching together. It's like it's the world's biggest choose-your-own-adventure book, and I can admire the craftsmanship behind that, and the skill it takes. I mean, I've actually written choose-your-own-adventure books, and I know how hard writing those is." (David Cage, Heavy Rain , PS3, Warren Spector)

as you think cage only made PS games i suggest you pipe down.

fahrenheit is one of my favourite games.

please don't speak again.

@Spam-Fritter

Fahrenheit is also one of my favourite games. As is Heavy Rain. So, if you know Fahrenheit, you should know he ISNT a one trick pony, because Heavy Rain was also a masterpiece. As was The Nomad Soul, to a lesser extent.

So, you consider his method of using QTE actions to sell a story as a 1 trick pony but ignore the fact that his trick isn't in the way you interact with the story but the possibilities one has in telling a story with video games to begin with.

WHY is no one here a fan of Omikron?...
Christopher  +   1120d ago
Never got to play it. Doubt the majority of people here did either.
camel_toad  +   1120d ago
LOVED Omikron. It really left a lasting memory on me, like I had really been in another world for a while. Awesome game.

David Cage and Warren Spector working together on a game would be amazing...

Someone that knows what they're talking about and can appreciate the work and love put into Heavy Rain? Other then the fans, this is unheard of. May not be the future of gaming, but at least it's an appreciated gem this gen.

We know Warren, we know. Nice of you to say so but.

I respect the work he does.
And that studio does some really impressive work with graphics. That GDC demo of a android looked awesome and ran on current gen machine.

But for me personally all that extreme scripted stuff is like a big tumor on gaming that needs to be cut away.

Give me more games like Halo,Dishonored,Half life(scripting done right),skyrim, other etc. If gaming keeps going this way all we are going to is push a button for "look here" queue in scripted event.
trouble_bubble  +   1120d ago
More games like Halo?! Because FPS's are really rare, eh? Wow. There's already a new Halo game every year. What more do you want? A national holiday, lol? Heavy Rain is just one game.
CommonSense  +   1120d ago
way to set the bar for "genius" even lower.
Laxman  +   1120d ago
Name one storyteller as good as David Cage. Im not saying there isnt one, I would just like you to try and name someone you think is better.
Spydiggity  +   1120d ago
The writers for Valve, Rockstar, Rocksteady, Ken Levine, and on and on and on and on.

There's a few...just to help out.

And btw, to be a good game story teller, you need to be able to weave the story into the game play. David Cage can't do that at all.

EDIT: how is it that EVERY time i express an opinion that goes against a ps3 exclusive, it's trolling? grow up, maybe?

@spydiggity
Wtf ya talkin about lol? Try playing the game.

Searching for clues at the trainyard murder scene and interviewing ppl is gameplay tied to story. Investigating the apartment of a potential suspect and then shooting him or letting him go is gameplay. Sneaking up on the guy robbing the grocery store or just running up is gameplay, chasing the suspect through the store and freezer, driving the wrong way down a street, solving SAW puzzles, running through a construction site to save your drowining brother...all gameplay tied to the story. You didn't just -see- Madison's hallucination dream in a cutscene, you played it.

Just to help out. Sheeshlulz

Why do people troll his work.
Lmao! Heavy Rain is perhaps this gen's most refreshing new Ip. It's not perfect but its faults are over looked by the content there in presented so well. I loved every moment of Heavy Rain and the people who troll it only watched YouTube videos. Lol. A game like that needs to be played not just watched through some YouTube video. Bring on "Beyond: Two Souls"

I can't wait! Keep trollibg PS3 gamers will continue to get and play unique and different games than just your generic shooters year after year.

@ Sevir

Who is trolling? It seems like a legitimate subject for debate to me. I've never played Heavy Rain so I'm not taking sides as to whether or not this guy's work is any good, let alone the work of a genius. But, come on man, just because someone brings something up that's defiant from what you think is right doesn't automatically make it "trolling." In fact, the last two sentences of your comment could be considered trolling more than anything Spydiggity or CommonSense has said.
ABizzel1  +   1120d ago
Don't know him personally, so I can't say if he's a genius or not. But the man completely understands film and his studio is the only one to blend games and films in proper way.
