What is wrong with the PlayStation Network?

PlayStation Universe voices its frustration and concerns over the instability of the PlayStation Network. (PS3, Tag Invalid)

CustardTrout  +   325d ago
As much as I dislike paying for Xbox Live, atleast it's moderately stable.
PoSTedUP  +   325d ago
yeah that hacking thing screwed things up a little bit. it's not that big of a deal considering they are keeping things more secure and it only has been down a few times for a little while each time, no biggie. it's still free with free stuff and things to do and $50 a year with even better free stuff and more savings and things to do.
BrutallyBlunt  +   325d ago
Steam is also free, how often do you see that service be down for maintenance? As for the security issues, i am not worried about that. Sony improved it and i haven't had any issues with my account.

PSN has been very stable for me, so I guess that one-ups your mere "moderate" stability. /s

Maybe the fact that I have decent knowledge of how to set up my router, and get Open NAT on my PS3 has something to do with it. I RARELY get disconnected from PSN.

Well played LevelHead, well played.
TBM  +   325d ago
ive had no issues with psn other than the hack last year.
Dms2012  +   325d ago
You must love disagrees.
CustardTrout  +   325d ago
They do things to me nipples.
Nes_Daze  +   325d ago
"Moderately" yes, because I get issues with Live, which is surprising since little fanboys here make it out to be sooo stable.

Ever since the hack people love to act like PSN is crap, most of those same people don't even own PS3s.
cstyle  +   325d ago
PSN is good but its no xbox live. Live's infrastructure is just plain better.

This entire article can be made to look stupid by one simple fact.

YOUR OWN CONNECTION CAN CAUSE YOUR OWN PSN NOT TO WORK!

Why the hell are people this stupid? I have never had an actual problem with PSN besides the New Years thing and the PSN Hack. That's it. And those 2 problems were massive. But these idiots tweeting "I can't access my PSN" fail to recognize some basic network problems ON THEIR END! Or if it's game related, it could be on the game's servers end. I mean seriously. PSN is not down all the time. And all of these alleged updates have never affected me. They usually do them passed peak hours and it's only ever down for like 2 hours.

When PSN goes down for you, CHECK YOUR OWN CONNECTION BEFORE WHINING LIKE A SPOILED BRAT! It's really not that hard to not be that stupid.
NotSoSilentBob  +   325d ago
I have been saying this for years. Have a bubble for some common sense.
DragonKnight  +   325d ago
Thanks. I mean, there are so many little things that can go wrong, especially if you're using wifi, in your network settings. My router goes down all the time and I have to reset it because it stopped broadcasting its name or some other stupid reason. But then you get the idiots who are on PSN when it goes down and automatically assume that it's Sony's network that is to blame. How about you check your own connection first, reboot your router, check your settings or anything like that?

But you know how it is, people love to b*tch.
wenaldy  +   325d ago
You are talking about today's generation gamer.
Gekko  +   325d ago
I wouldn't mind as much if they actually announced all of their maintenances on their website like that incident that happened last month which caused an error for people registering and logging in.

Seeing as how it's free all is forgiven.

Gekko  +   325d ago
Oof, looking at how many disagrees I got maybe it wasn't worth mentioning. I suppose my complaint only happens once in a while that's why.

For what it's worth though PSN is a good service and is enhanced with PS+.
HarryMasonHerpderp  +   325d ago
Live is a little better but not enough to warrant paying money for it.
For the same price you pay for a year subscription with Live you could sign up to PS+ and get free games all year and discounts on the store.
Yeah PSN isn't the best but it's more than over the standard you would expect for a free online service and I for one have never had a problem with it when playing games.

The ppl disagreeing with you are the ones that are upset theyre not getting huge deals out of subbing for gold. All they get is the ability to play online, and use netflix and facebook.

lulz
PockyKing  +   325d ago
You know what the funniest thing is though, the people that pay for Gold are still bombarded with advertisements on every single page of the dashboard lol.

no PSN problems here.

PSN has proven unstable from the get go for me, and I have my router set up to open NAT and a very fast 40 mbps connection. The downloads and updates are excruciatingly slow, and there are lots of those. The fact that when you just want to dl a demo you first wait for the dl, then possibly an update, then you have to install it. On Xbox Live however, I simply download the damned game, click on play, and off I go. So stop glossing over on how truly awful PSN is, its free for a reason.

@Dms2012

Sounds like your connection doesn't jib with Sonys servers. I have my PS3 behind a NAT2 connection and have never had trouble getting online, other then when the PSN has been giving the world trouble.
raymantalk1  +   325d ago
@Dms2012

sounds to me that you have something setup wrong i have been useing psn for a few years now and have never had any problems with download speeds it works just as fast as my xbox live did when i had an account i dont understand all this it is better on xbox live because you pay for it when it is not in reality any better on it.

ps also on xbox live most downloads are much smaller in size compared to what you get on the psn therefore will take longer to download
raymantalk1  +   325d ago
at the disagrees with what i put can you please explain what you are disagreeing with ?

are you disagreeing with the fact that i put that the xbox downloads are smaller ? if so this is true it is not a lie so you cannot disagree with that.

and the only other thing you can be disagreeing with is the fact that i say i have had no problems with the psn and that it is as good as the xbox live which it is you get no lag on psn and the online gaming works perfect only thing my xbox live had over the psn is cross game chat which i never used other than that it does everything live does so what exactly are the disagrees about ?
lorianguy  +   325d ago
Nothing.. it's fine..
It's not amazing, but it gets the job done and it does it well and cheaply :)
sandman224  +   325d ago
There's nothing wrong with psn! The only thing they don't have is party chat. To me it's not that big of a deal.
shoddy  +   325d ago
My cousin got an xbox and all i see is they sit there and party chat all day.

I wouldn't have a problem if he chat to girls.

Holy crap, what an alarmist article this is. The writer is trying to make it seem like your entirely livelihood is in danger or at risk every time you "turn on your PS3." In my 5+ years of using the PS3, I've only been forced to change my PS3 password ONCE. I know some people's mileage may vary slightly, but I don't think that's too bad of a track record, regardless.

And then he complains about the "incredible amount" of firmware updates, as though it's necessarily a negative thing. Firstly, firmware updates can and have improved the functionality and performance of consoles (both the PS3 and the 360). Secondly, the firmware only takes a few minutes to download on a decently fast internet connection, and they only occur every couple months, if that.

I'm sorry, but this article is making a huge to-do about nothing. Perhaps to get hits. I guess sometimes "journalists" run out of things to write about; and what better way to get exposure than to make people worried or stressed inordinately?

I look at it this way, what isn't working properly or what we don't have that we wanted they will implement it in the next system. But over all I don't have any problems with PSN and the hacking thing turned out to be a good thing for people who didn't already have the games they offered for free like myself.
Young_ART  +   325d ago
I really don't get articles like this. I don't get disconnected from games, or lag out.........hardly EVER. and im using a DORMROOMS internet. you guys must not know how to configure your routers. stop trying to act like YOU lagging is the whole network+Sony's fault.

ALSO, people who favor other consoles and are on here trolling about the PSN being down before. LAST I CHECKED IT GOT FIXED, AND DURING ITS DOWNTIME I COULD STILL USE MY SYSTEM FOR NON INTERNET THINGS.
Don't you remember red ring? that was/is a WAY bigger problem, and turned/turns you're system into a paper weight.

It's like everyone WAITS for sony to do something whether it's good or wrong, just so they can complain.

go play the little bit of games you guys even have and stop trying to bash a system for something that can and probably has happened at least once on every network.
Hufandpuf  +   325d ago
You're the only one here bashing the "other" system.
NoFanboyRequired  +   325d ago
Agreed. Calling people trolls when he's also a troll bashing the other console. Kids need to grow up these days and stop bending over for these corporations. None of us get anything out of them besides getting our money drained out of our damn pockets. Be a gamer, not a fangirl!

I think only shooter players are concerned with online instability.. They cant turn on COD & go nutts about it.. After the 5hr campaign, (which they prolly dont even play) they wana run n gun & cant while the network undergoes maintenance

Nothing !!!
Octo1  +   325d ago
I don't buy that PSN is unstable compared to Live BS anymore. Basically what is still being said is that millions of PSN user are willing to stay with an unstable/crappy service just to save $50/year? I don't buy it! I don't care if the service is free. If its crap then I'd gladly pay for a better service but in this case I haven't had issues with PSN. Any "network issues I've had was 9/10 times my connections fault. I admit Sony can improve some thing on PSN like in game invites. Other than that I've been satisfied with the service I've gotten from PSN.
Tonester925  +   325d ago
The only thing I like about the Xbox is when you get an achievement, you push the middle button, it goes straight to the trophies and sending voice messages.

I CAN live without that. That isn't worth paying for Xbox live for me.

Other than that, my online experience has been the same other than being called a Nigger every time I was on Xbox Live.

haha fun times
Hicken  +   325d ago
That's an amazing thing. I haven't been on XBL much. Halo 3 has actually been it.

But the four times I was on there, I got called more racist names than I've heard in 4 YEARS on PSN.

Just saying.
Dms2012  +   325d ago
If more people on PSN actually talked, you would hear the N word and other colorful insults much more often. Am I the only one that realizes this?
Tonester925  +   325d ago
Oh I get it on both systems. But that easily gets taken care of. lol
DFresh  +   325d ago
People do use mics on PSN.
Hell I have a mic and the only times I'll talk to people is if I know them or I'm playing a team based game.
Other then that your gonna get muted.
Nes_Daze  +   325d ago
PSN unstable, funny, besides the Hack, I haven't had any issues with PSN since then, but with Live, I frequently can't join party chats, and I frequently get disconnected. According to the article's logic: I'll say "What's wrong with Live"??
Yumi-Yumi4urTummy  +   325d ago
I may know the answer, but you will not like it. But who cares anyway, That happens when things are FREE!! nothing personal, just realistic. You get what you pay for!
Again, save your comments, I CANT READ!

It's ironic this posting is from PSU. PSU has had the same server and network slow down and Internal Error 500 problems for many years now and the admin keep saying that is the way it's supposed to be.(?!) Average number of users is around 500 but occasionally, they will have spikes over 14,000, totally locking up the site, and the admin there says this is a good thing, it means one of their external links is redirecting a lot of traffic to them. The intelligence level of their "articles" is really declining.

Psn fails really?? Why don't Xbox run games like dust or mag then?
jonnyvito  +   324d ago
The dude who reported it is incorrect. You only have to check Twitter comments and forums about PSN to discover that 99% aren't satisfied with PSN.
Kobe357  +   324d ago
Its free and it has only failed me once (the hacker outage) so I don't have an issue with it.
Tetsujin  +   324d ago
The few times PSN goes down for me I play something offline or I'll load a movie first. At least 95% of the time I always check my internet before I start looking into the PS3; some cases a simple reboot fixes the issues, or I'll go as far as sign off then sign back on again, and boom it works.

This article screams "Slow news day"
