Is Gaikai Sony’s Next Gen Console?

"Most of the fuss about Sony’s recent acquisition of cloud-based streaming service Gaikai is how Sony will integrate the service into its games and systems. However, I find it unlikely that Sony acquired Gaikai simply to use it. It’s much more likely that it was bought for its patents—either allowing Sony to develop a future cloud-based technology without repercussions or allowing Sony to follow through with a technology that already exists…without getting sued. The latter is probably the reality." Explosion.com (Culture, Dev, Gaikai, Industry, Next-Gen, PS Vita, PS3, PSP, Sony, Tech)

No but Gaikai acquisition will help Sony's Next Gen console and other future products.

no
GribbleGrunger  +   1157d ago
no, it's the PS5
nukeitall  +   1157d ago
It would be a freaken sad day if it was!

I don't want a console that *has* to be connected at all times. That would be retarded, especially if I have a poor connection.
GribbleGrunger  +   1157d ago
ah, but the point is that PS5 will simply be PS4 with Gaikai fully integrated. PS4 will be Sony's last console EVER

@GribbleGrunger

what an absurd statement what are you from the future or something how do you know that there wont be a ps5 or ps6 or ps7 ?

as for gaikai it relies on the internet bandwidth which unless you have not noticed the world has not all got super fast broadband yet and even if they did you still suffer from latency problems which WILL affect the quality and speed of gameplay even a controller has some latency problems all be very small it will always be better to have the actual hardware to run it on as the internet is notoriously unreliable and can go down at a moments notice unless it can be played locally as well it will be more of a nuisance than a benefit and besides i think everyone will agree that they prefer to actually own the physical game so they can boot it up and play it when ever they want in single player as well as online.

I think the key here is that we are still talking about 60fps vs 30 fps games and then you are adding in latency, bandwidth and very low fault tolerance.

This isn't something Gaikai can control, as Gaikai doesn't control the internet so they are just a small pawn in a big pond.

Even at a very high speed internet there are plenty of artifacts visible during intense scenes and that is close to best case scenario.

Heed my words, before cloud ever becomes popular the next generation technology for consoles will be cheap enough that we don't need the cloud. Instead we will just have intelligent game delivery where game assets (textures, sound, game engine) needed first will be loaded for immediate access with background loading.

The experience will be far superior, the hardware will be cheap and the bandwidth cost for everyone is lower.

The question many will ask is why hasn't the technology caught up in the past, because previously there was always an issue with resolution increasing. Consoles have largely taken over videogames and they all will only support maximum 1080p. And Full HD 1080p will be the standard for decades to come so the next console cycle will likely outlast this one!

No. The speculation is really starting to annoy me. I know it's the end of the generation and not much is being said about the next generation but this is getting outta hand.

No, but the PS4 and the Vita will probably support it in the future.

cstyle  +   1157d ago
It sure as hell won't be free though.
WeskerChildReborned  +   1157d ago
It would help better if Gaikai was on the next Playstation instead of the current one.
Dms2012  +   1157d ago
This is just a silly question, of course its not.
one2thr  +   1157d ago
