TGE:
I've owned a Nintendo console since the days of the Famicom. Back then the words “video game” might as well have not even existed. We just “played Nintendo”. Nintendo reigned as the king of the home video gaming console. Nintendo had excellent first party games as well as the support of all of the 3rd party developers and publishers. Sadly, the same cannot be said today. Nintendo’s grip on the proverbial hardcore gaming market has weakened since the days of the GameCube. And in an unsurprising path forward, I don’t think the Wii U will change things over the long haul.
Honestly, whoever wrote this article, it's time to give up games journalism.
I don't agree with their path over the last decade or so. The GameCube (which is sitting in my closet) failed to deliver and now it's all about gimmicks. I think all of the "casuals" that you guys are determined to defend for whatever bizarre reason aren't going to return for the Wii U. Nintendo made a decision to go for short-term gain by romancing that crowd with the Wii, and now they're paying for it.
I respect Miyamoto more than just about anybody in the industry, but I'm not some blind loyalist. I'm not going to defend something I like when it stops being something I like just because we had some good times in the past.
I'm pretty sure you don't have the wii libaray to qualify as a fan or hardcore gamer. On top of that I'm also betting you couldn't beat any of those games since you seem like a colector.
I've went in many offices of exec who have consoles on the shelf but could not even tell you about later levels stages of some of those classics are why they are cool.
You seem like one of those guys. The had one gimmick we all loved game play. Luckily they have he'd coming so you can finally see why the wii is hardcore and why nintendo is still the only definition of video game rather than computer games.
Just like the wii and the 3ds they won't need defending. They just got their 3d game engines fun and I'm not sure they have too much to fix anymore after the wii.
In context the other next gens console maybe be redundant since pc will pretty much out do them at what they can lay claim to. Yet I'm not sure why you would wait on power which is currently available. Unless you enjoy their exclusives, lucky those will be coming to their older systems. It's going to be a fun gen reguardless.
That was used against all nerds about eight years ago.
Now we see nerds using it against other nerds. Lol really?
Ot: I was seriously considering buying a wii the other day for around seventy dollars. I really want to play Skyward Sworg and a lot of those Jrpgs the PS360 never got.
I figure, why not? Their are several Wii games that I want.
My point?
I'll probably be doing the same thing for the Wii U. One day it will be dirt cheap and years old. On that day I will see if there are enough games that I want. As opposed to buying the console new and hoping that there will eventually be a lot of games that I want.
Ugh I hate that crap! ;)
The PSX sold 100M, the PS2 sold 150M. There is not that many 'hardcore' gamers out and about. Even if you halve those numbers the sales of a game classified as 'hardcore' achieved a fraction of those sales. The only thing Nintendo did was go after the market which had clearly worked for Sony for 2 generations after their most hardcore system sold a measly 24 million units.
Is there any reason to believe that there are 60 million 'hardcore' gamers owning a PS3 and 360? If so then why does most of the games heralded by said gamers struggle to push 5 million copies, a mere 12% of the systems install base? The simple truth is that the 'hardcore' is a minority on any system, not just the ones that have openly targeted the casual market.
Plus too the ps eye was complete trash when it came out. Sony has dumped their mascots over and over. Now the ultimide casual game is last of us.... What skills do you need to play this game. How many will replay this interactive canned multiple ending choose your adventure story.
Makes me laugh when people say the Wii is for casuals, I have a library of over 50 games, i'd say 20% of those are casual. When you look at my collection - Alone in the Dark, Another Code, Back to the Future Blazing Angels, Bully, CoD 3-World at War-Black Ops, Conduit, Cursed Mountain, Dead Space, Disaster Day of Crisis, Fifa 08, Ghostbusters, Ghost Squad, Golden Eye, Heat Seeker, House of the Dead Overkill & 2+3, Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword & Twilight Princess, Links Crossbow Training, Mad World, Mario Kart, Mario Party 8 Mario Strikers Charged, Medal of Honor 2 & Vanguard, Monster Hunter, Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, Mario Bros Wii, Prince of Persia, Pro Evo 08, Punch Out, Red Steel 1+2 Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles, Scarface, Silent Hill, Smackdown vs Raw 09, Star Wars Clone Wars, Force Unleashed 1+2, Mario Galaxy 1+2, Paper Mario Tiger Woods 09, Tomb Raider, Warioware Smooth Moves, Wii Fit, Play, Sports & Sports Resort.
(BTW i must have about 8/9 downloaded from the VC)
Personally i don't think people gave the Wii a chance, just look at the titles there, people say their Wii is gathering dust but there are some fantastic games, even ones i am yet to own so to write off a console which is yet to be released which also has backwards compatibility is just plain retarded.
Sure games such as Black Ops & Force Unleashed look shit loads better on 360/PS3 but i love to play with the Wii Zapper, loads more enjoyable and i find it more realistic and as for Force Unleashed 1...well...closest you will ever come to being a Jedi!!
People wanna say Nintendo don't cater for the Core, look at my list again and you'll have no arguement!!!
Lots of other sleeper hits also that alot of so called hardcore don't even know about.
That being said there are a huge amount of "CORE" games on the Wii like jayzablade and scissor_runner mentioned above. It is to bad that the so called hardcore types cannot see past Mario and Pokemon.
