In March 2011, Nintendo threw a launch party for its then-brand-new 3DS. As midnight approached, a couple hundred loyal fans and less loyal reporters gathered outside the Best Buy in Manhattan's Union Square to watch Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime extol the virtues of his company's new system.
I don't think Nintendo is giving up as much as they are resting the push. 3D isn't going to sell the system. Their games will do their talking now, and their sales are fantastic, so it's clear that they know that the consumers get the message.
Nintendo should have invested more R&D for a better designed device with a second thumbpad over anything else, and that is my biggest problem with 3D-- it got in the way of other priorities I'd have liked to see implemented. But I guess that's what a VITA is for.
Why? It was used as a graphical asset and style delivery instead of depth gauging or for purely fancy pop out affects.(I know that sounds the same, but if you play it I think you will understand.)
The 3d offers a lot, and is a great feature. I couldn't image the machine without it. I can see folks not liking it, but lets not write it off and kill something so unique before it is given a chance to be used in a *really* grand and original way, for as good as it has been in some games I'm sure the potential to deliver interesting unique new effects/gameplay or what have you is still there
