30 million pieces of Playstation hardware. PS2 + PSP + PS Vita + PS3.
It's actually a pretty reachable goal if they drop the ps3's price. One more drop and the ps3 hits the spot where the ps2 did most of it's sales.
The latest firmware update didn't exactly unleash anything other than a few minor bug fixes and enabled a few insignificant features.

The fact that a console is aging after 6 years on the market? PS4 is on its way, just like Xbox 3. Don't let you tell different.

How exactly does the old technology "show"? i mean...the 1st party exclusives look miles better than anything the competition produces aside from high end PCs...so does that mean 360 have last gen tech?

The Last of Us, GOW:A and Beyond don't look like 6 year old tech. In fact, I haven't seen many other games that look like either one of those.
That being said, this Gen is different. I am sure Sony is planning on trying to make this Gen last beyond next Gen. It is a very slippery slope though because next Gen launch titles must be strong. But, it is still an entertainment powerhouse that most people will keep and throw on another tv. If it can manage to get stronger and stronger before 2014, it will weigh heavily on the minds of ppl choosing next Gen. That, and if they can sell 30-50 million consoles in two years, it will help them financially and make then stronger going forward. Also, it doesn't hurt to have established really strong ips going forward. Gamers will be clamoring to get their hands on the ps4.
But, as history has shown, it doesn't matter how strong ur console or games are (ps2, gow2 & ff12) if u let Xbox get the jump again. It's a risk Xbox had to take to gain marketshare and a missed opportunity for Nintendo with the wiiU this time around. With PC's already well ahead (& not two cycles ahead due to lack of tech, ie. next Gen engines etc), and Microsoft releasing smartglass, windows 8 and the surface, Sony must be very smart this time. I understand their financial woes (bankruptcy may actually help them alot), and their desire to maximize this Gen, but they must tread lightly. Maybe this strategy and Microsoft's lack of IPs right now may work out, but it may be a trap. Just don't release the ps4 a year after Xbox 720 & expect me to wait. Do not bank on the fact that people would rather play great existing titles on ps3 rather than fork over money for next Gen. I have already held off on updating my pc to c new console specs and price. They may get a glance of our next Gen fervor when the wiiU releases. If it does well, abandon all strategy and release the ps4 as soon as possible.

So I'm pretty sure, he didn't mean 30 million for PS3, but for Playstation branded stuff overall including PS2, PS3 and PS Vita. Still a pretty tall order though.

Don't know why anyone would give you a disagree. It's a question, not an opinion or anything to disagree over.
PS3 had a $100 price cut in Aug 2009 and then another $50 price cut in Aug of 2011 in the US.
The Xbox 360 has held it's price steady since roughly the end of 2008. Like Sony though, MS have added value to the console by upgrading hard drives and etc.
It's still amazing to see Xbox 360 still sell like hotcakes after 3-4 years of keeping the same price. Even more remarkable that it is competing with a $250 PS3! o_0
Then again, it is amazing how Apple can sell craploads of iPads. More than MS and Sony can sell Xbox 360 and PS3's combined! 0_o

How does it show? Ever looked at a PC game? Even a weak PC these days will outdo an Xbox 360 or PS3 any day. My laptop probably puts out better graphics than any of the consoles just to put it to perspective.
The amount of RAM in my console is less than on my smart phone for God's sake!
I think we are way beyond in NEED of a new console generation, that isn't crippled like the Wii U.
I think you might be mistaken. You make it sound like Xbox360 never slashed price while PS3 was when in fact, PS3 has only done about 3 price drops/remodels/bundle packs and 360 has done about a dozen pricedrops/dif bundle packaging.
360 has remained about $50 less than PS3 every step of the way except in 2010 I believe where The PS3 and 360 were the same price for a while(with PS3 handedly outselling it).
Even now the cheapest Brand New 360 from Gamestop is 175 with 20GB HardDrive. PS3 is $249 w/ 160GB.
Mind you, this is US i am speaking of. Unsure about everywhere else.

Xbox 360 had several price drops as well.
I remember PS3 having three price drops, but not one last year.
Phones and PCs are built for multitasking. Consoles don't need as much RAM.
The PS Vita has less RAM than smartphones today, but it outputs better graphics because it's a dedicated gaming system built for games. Same thing with consoles like PS3. Your phone can't play games like The Last of Us.
So that RAM argument was rather pointless. Especially when systems like the Wii succeed.
Try harder next time you want to put down the PS3.

Sony has had too price cuts since 2009 and MS has had none. How do you think the lowest Xbox 360 model is within $50 of the PS3 that started off at $500-600?
What is surprising to me, is the fact that Sony supposedly has the best value around dropping prices while MS kept it steady, yet they are neck in neck despite the strength in Japan.

The cheapest Xbox 360 is $199 with 4GB on-board memory. There is no 20GB model anymore and must be of old batch they are clearancing. It is not official pricing nor restocked.
With the close pricing, the blu-ray drive, the included hard drive and free online play, you would think the PS3 would be far better deal at only $50 more. Heck, the cheapest Xbox 360 with a XBL Gold membership cost more than the PS3!

it's funny because of hearing the arguments against the playstation 3 longevity based on dated hardware. did you guys stop to realize that their support had nothing to do with not releasing a playstation 4?

technically something being dated is not the act of an opinion is a technical fact.Beyond is an amazing looking game but by no means is technically beyond a game like god of war 3. but my point is neither is god of war 3.
they are all great looking games but none of them could technically be leaps and bounds better looking than the other by definition.

being said sony and every other company clearly knows that they need to progress after they're finishing systems these games look great but there's no reason to stop progress because these games look great that's nice to know but there needs to be a successor and sony clearly know this and it's going to be a playstation 4.
I'm all for games like beyond in the last of us I think you're great additios but realistically you cant just continue a generation for several years with just a playstation 3 alone. it was like last gen in 2005 we got games like god of war and RE4 it didn't just mean we should just not come out with a playstation 3.
Now, this has nothing to do with producing good games. Development is not all of a sudden irrelevant, but God of War III came out 2 years ago. Certain games looking better than the competition doesn't mean the hardware is not outdated. If Ascension looks "better" than God of War III, its not because the PS3 suddenly awakened its inner power, its because the devs have done it before, and they know what to optimize. With the PS3 having virtually no memory to work with by today's standards, there are many tricks developers use to make graphics look good or better in some set pieces than others.
This is also one of the reasons I'm building a Gaming Rig later this year. I would rather have the best-of-the-best and it seems the PC is the only way to truly do that (though I will still get a PS4 and Xbox-Next).

Sony should just focus on making remote play a more useful feature. Next-gen I think sony if anything should implement upgradeable gpus and ram. Depending on what kind of CPU/cpus they go with they wouldn't have to upgrade that for quite sometime, I mean as long as you got a good gpu you can still use a decent dual core cpu to play BF3.
Out of curiosity, what is the slot right to the game slot on the vita for?
Now sure they will still sell PS3's but to expect the same amount of service and games on it that would suffice you not upgrading is completely fantasy at most.
Comparing this is PS2 is disengenious because the fact remains Sony has had stiff competition this generation therefore that grace period is no longer there where they can sell millions after the PS3. Time to move on.

You've got DiRtY and ApolloAdams trying to convince people Sony will do what it's never done: drop support for a system because its successor is out.
nukeitall is desperately trying to make the PS3's more numerous price cuts look bad in comparison to the 360's cuts(if your product is selling at a lower price, why would you feel the need to drop the price when your competitor's more expensive product does? doesn't it make more sense to keep your price right where it is until it's no longer selling? that's not really "impressive" at all, but rather basic).
YodaCracker claiming that Microsoft showing off a bunch of multiplats disproves the idea that Sony showed themselves to be more dedicated to gaming at E3.

Notice that KwietStorm and RedHemi300C aren't slammed with more disagrees than agrees, despite them saying things that could be considered negative about Sony. Can you see any difference in HOW they said what they did, as opposed to the other people I named? That's why they're in the black: because they refrained from bashing.
As for everything else you say- about new IPs not selling systems, price drops being too late, and "most" gamers gearing up for next gen- it's all speculation by you that can't be proved in the slightest. How can the gen be over when the first next gen system hasn't even released yet? And the PS2 is just ONE example of Sony not just dropping a system immediately after its replacement is on the market.
In regards to your last sentence, why is it that you feel the need to remark thus? Are people not free to disagree with your opinion on any of the subjects noted simply because you're serious? My opinions are based on me being on a certain side of the fence...but about the disagrees. I went with that because certain posts get flagged for trolling, but someone disagrees for the hell of it. Believe me I don't go to bed thinking about it.

I praise each company for different reasons also, mainly microsoft for trying to combine our media experience and Sony for releasing the games they do.
Even in one of my posts I regretted not being able to have a PS until this gen and missing out on all their past games and being grateful for them re-releasing some of the older ones.

The Playstation brand has always had a large learning curve for developers to understand. Jim Ryan even stated that even Sony's own in-house developers are finally grasping at the tech of the PS3.

microsoft "dropped" the original xbox for 2 reasons, 1 of which is often overlooked (especially by the pro-sony crowd of N4G) and is what youd call "significant".
1. they wanted to focus on the 360. why focus on an outdated and replaced console? full steam ahead is the best policy IMO.
2. now this is the biggy - nVidia, makers of the GPU in the 360, DISCONTINUED PRODUCTION OF THE GPU USED IN THE XBOX IN 2006!
so explain to me, how is microsoft supposed to keep making original Xboxs even if they wanted to when they dont have any GPUs to put in them? good luck playing games on a GPU-less console lol.

Id rather have more games than a handful of games that are bigger and look better.
I dont see any other platform releasing a ton of games now. or in the near future but the ps3.
The games releasing now, and soon on the ps3 are super exciting to me and millions of other gamers.
Some of the tech in the ps3 is outdated, but some of the tech is way beyond even the pc. i.e. blu-ray drives are not the norm for pc's. cell technology is not the norm in pc's. 3d is not the norm in pc's. true 7.1 digital surround sound is not the norm for pc's.
The ps3 has shown, without a shadow of a doubt that it is very relevent in today's gaming world, and for the future. imho.
I love both systems and wouldn't do without either but there's nothing in the PS3 now that's "way beyond" the PC.
The "hardcore" gamer will obviously adopt the "new box" whole hardedly, but the masses will pass. And I don't see SONY, being in the financial state the corparation is in at the moment, giving the ps4 its due diligence. So I want to keep getting great games in 3D, 7.1 digital surround, huge maps, large online etc.. on the very capable ps3 until it is truly dead.
